Penn Wrath 8000 spin fishing reel an inside look and how to service

I have mixed feelings on the bushings. I had two Quantum 6000s that got dragged through the sand by sharks. (an interesting story on it's own) After a complete teardown and cleaning, I never seemed to get all of the fine sand out of the bearings and replacing them was almost as much as a new reel. My old ABU 5000s have bronze bushings that I upgraded to neoprene. (5500 ball bearings won't fit) I've had no problems with them and a dunk in the water or a drag through the sand requires a simple cleaning and reoiling to bring it back to smooth operation. I bought two of these Wrath's to replace my Quantums, a 5000 and a 6000. I use them exclusively for once a week surf fishing trips. I like them the way they are for now, but it's nice to know they can be upgraded if one desires. Thanks so much for your channel 👍

You've said a lot. If the reels do not get dunked or dragged by sharks, then the bearings are better. If the reel needs to be restored, then bearing almost always need to be replaced under those conditions. Thanks

Great backup reel. Bought the 5000 version and replaced bushings with bearings. Great for catfish and striped bass in the Hudson. Only the side plate is metal. The rest is graphite but of good quality.

If I had that reel, I would do the same. It is a quick swap to replace the business with bearings and it is well worth it. Thanks - Dennis

Penn Wrath reminds me of the old powergraphs. They aren’t fancy, but they do the job. I have a 8k for grouper and bottom fishing. For 50 bucks, why not.

That is a good comparison, or match the Penn Silver series against the SpinFisher. Entry level reel with a lot of positives and a few negatives in each - Dennis

Good to se that you got the encoding fixed from last evenings posting. $50 is cheap enough for a new reel of it's size. Too bad about all the plastic.

I don't know. The case and spool sounded metalic. Couldn't tell about rotor. For its weight, it may be metal. Unless you mean the bushings. For the price, I'd run it until the bushings wear and replace with roller bearings. Of course, it's too new a model for me. Most of my reels are 20+ years.😆

It took a while. Replacing the bushings with bearings is relatively cheap and easy to do. If I had the reel, I would definitely consider the upgrade - Thanks - Dennis

The fierce bearings fit the wrath. I also got the carbontex drag washers and the fierce drag nut with the seal. I have the wrath 6000

Wrath can be a good reel especially those that dunk and forget it for the price. Plus bushings are great for kayaking or constantly exposed to salt reels. Definitely switch to carbon drags first.

Thanks for your videos. So I have a Penn pursuit IV 4000 that I replaced the main gear and crosswind gear on and it’s binding at the top or bottom of the crosswind block’s throw. Everything else looks normal. Do you have any idea what’s causing it?

Is it possible that you have the crosswind block on upside down? The screw hole should be on the bottom. Does the reel bump is the spool and click ratchet are removed. If it runs OK without the spool, it probably needs shim washers on top of the click ratchet and under the spool

@@2ndChanceTackle so, even with the main gear removed and just the shaft and crosswind block on the crosswind gear it still catches at the top and bottom. I can’t tell that the shaft is bent, but I went ahead and ordered one. I’m fairly certain the gear and block are in properly. This happened months ago. It locked up and I forced it. When I took it apart the teeth on the crosswind gear and the main gear were are up. But now even with new parts it still does the same thing.

I think you may have the source of the issue with a bent axle shaft. if you remove the crosswind block and pull up on the axle shaft, it should move top to bottom easily. It is is sticking, it is a sure sign of a bent shaft. Dennis

In which direction do the new carbon washers and the original metal washers go? Is there a right side up and a wrong side or upside down? The metal washers look like they have a flat side and a more rounded side. And the carbon washers look like they've got a difference in sides, too.

There is no right or wrong side. Just b consistent in the side you choose to face upon - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Okay. Thanks. I went by the top/first metal washer and just put them all with the flat side up. Do they get oiled or greased? Most of the original ones were dry and the ones that looked like they had lube looked like they were oiled.

No oil or grease is needed. They are non-permeable so the grease is unnecessary

Yes - it must have something to do with he clutch as that is the only thing that provides the A/R

The anti-reverse stops the reel from turning backwards. There are several styles mechanically. An instant anti-revers IAR used a one way clutch to do that. The older designs uses an A/R dog and click watch to accomplish the task. Hope that helps - Dennis

Yes, it can be repaired. It sounds like the anti-reverse clutch has failed and will need to be replaced - Thanks for asking - Dennis

I think that the drags may be stuck to the metals in the spool. That's the first thing to check and clean - Dennis
