It's on the combatant's honor to accept a blow. The standard is a solid blow sufficient for a blade to injure through chain armor. In practical terms, any solid blow should be accepted.

And yes, this means you can say no if you really want. However, that encourages your opponents to hit harder, and past a certain point no one wants that. If you gain a reputation for "rhino hide," refusing to accept basically anything in an effort to power through and win, you will not get on the champions' team, for starters. It's a surefire way to suffer severe social consequences in the fighter community.
