If you vote at the polls you have to sign your name so they can check your signature against the one they have on file, so they know you voted, and can't vote again in the same election. They have to have your name and signature on your mail-in ballot for the same reason.

If you mean eradicating the electoral college from the process of electing a president, therefore making the electing of a president democratic, I couldn't agree more but, what would make even more of a difference is, making voting run to a federal standard, so there is no difference between states on voting laws. Well, as a Pennsylvanian, I can tell you, it is a momentary confusion as to what date one should put. What if you are prepping it to be mailed but might not get to the post office for a day or two to mail it? (Because do we really trust our MAGA neighbors not to snitch it out of the box if it's mail-in ballot season and our mailbox flag is up...) Does the date have to match the postmark date? --- I believe the answer to this (quite likely defensible in court) is that your signature on the outer envelope makes it effectively a legal document; when you sign a legal document you are not dating it for the date of filing, you are documenting the date it was SIGNED. But what sucks is that the envelope does NOT instruct voters with the cues to enter the "date of signature"... and it should.

Targeting the lobbyists and lawyers that make these frivolous challenges, on the other hand, will at least hamper their efforts. The inner envelope ensures that no one can connect an individual's name to a marked ballot. It's a privacy thing, and in today's absurd climate of election interference and voter intimidation, a necessary precaution. The election workers record the name and date from the outer envelope so they know you voted in a timely fashion (I agree the date thing is absurd). Then they put the unmarked envelope with all the other unmarked envelopes to be counted on election day.

The postmark is the official date. This is strictly to be able to throw out votes.

We still have time to educate the voter. If they take the time to fill out a ballot and the effort to mail it in, they need to be educated on how to fill it out and how to insure everything is done correctly to get the ballot - your voice, counted. This is just some of the dirty tricks MAGA uses to prevent voters from using their fair right under the constitution.
