Right?? I came here to post the same thing. I never found her physically attractive in Laverne and Shirley, but she's really pretty in this interview. She's also a wonderful director.

As a director, Penny may not have been too prolific, but I give high marks to "Big," "League of Their Own," and "Awakenings." All three are wonderfully cast, with superb performances by the cast and perfect editing. It's hard not to credit the Director for such quality.

Pre 2000's: Girl could be a tomboy and still grow up to be a successful wife and mother. Post 2000's: Girl is a tomboy, gets told she has a gender identity problem, gets hormone treatments to alter her biology, kills herself a short number of years later. Yep, that's our world people. Same goes with guys and probably in greater numbers.

Jane Pauley is a gem, but I feel here she's reaching hard for Penny to say something very "pro-woman" or some grandiose statement about her talents as a director. Penny wasn't taking the bait. Penny was as real as they came without that Hollywood ego, it seems. Both gems.

Yeah, Penny looks pretty here. She didn't age well, and she got harder to understand in later interviews because of her heavy Brooklyn accent and her mumbling. If she had taken care of herself we might still have her. Sad

Pauley's questions here are fairly appalling. "Is that unprecedented for a woman director?" At this stage there were only a handful of women directors working, and most were only "allowed" to do niche projects, not commercial films with wide appeal. The question is loaded with dopey presuppositions. Then: "how did you know about 13 year old boys?" I wonder if Pauley ever asked any of the numerous male directors she interviewed how they knew about the female characters in their films?
@NeilTruick
@NeilTruick 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with the "appalling" adjective, but you have to understand this was 1988. It would absolutely be appalling to ask that question in 2020, but for that time, you couldn't consider too many commentators or news organizations "enlightened" by the most generous of definitions. I was there, and this was considered a pretty standard, zero-red-flag interview.
