Message for Zion here: Keep playing. I felt exactly the way you felt. The game is incredibly overwhelming at first, but once you understand its quirks, it becomes incredibly easy and smooth and fun. The reason you were doing so bad on the first boss was simple: you need to remember that when you roll on top of the yoyo, every jump makes you hop off of it automatically. After every jump you need to land on the yoyo again. Otherwise you'll sink into the sea. So yeah, you need to keep your finger really close to the trigger through the whole game. You need to press it a lot in order to keep your flow.
@theconsolekiller711311 ай бұрын
Enjoyed this game much more than I expected. As said there is a learning curve, even if you are skilled at these types of games, but it didnt take too long for me to get into a great flow with the movement, chaining different moves. There is some camera jankiness since its a little offset which changes the angles of your controls/movement. There is also some inconsistancies with clipping through platforms or it being difficult to gauge the proper depth perception at times (jumping too far or too short). Ive also had some dropped inputs where the character doesnt stay in his rolling form and cancels out automatically. Despite all of that Im really enjoying the game overall and was worth the 30 bones for me on Series X.

9:25 that boss was SO frustrating. The design could be more polished and it asks a lot of the player if you are still not used to the technical controls. On level 6 right now, but so far the only level where I felt everything clicked together was level 3. Music, design, platforming. But the rest is a very mixed bag with sadly, in my humble opinion, the cons outweighing the positives. Give it a try, it certainly feels like a fun throwback, blemishes and all. I look forward to their next title where they can learn from this first foray into 3D.

People are complaining about her character design, and I completely agree. Sonic was a huge success, in part because Sega understood the importance of having a memorable character design. Sega came to the realization Alex Kidd wasn’t up to the task, so they had a contest within the company to come up with the design for their new mascot. Their effort paid off, as Sonic is still one of the most recognizable video game mascots to this day. It’s a shame the developers of Penny’s Big Breakaway, being huge Sonic fans, overlooked the importance of character design.

I've been seeing a lot of people diss on Penny's design but is it really that bad? It's clear that they were going for a jester/clownish motif, and the patterns and design are more tame compared to other depictions of this archetype. The color scheme is alright as well, yellow and purple do a good job contrasting each other to make the outfit pop, along with some orange accents. Also I don't think it's fair to compare Penny to Sonic in this instance because we're so used to seeing him now and the legacy he's built up. Back when Sonic was introduced in the 90's, I'm sure he wasn't that original compared to other animal mascots at the time and if the gameplay didn't back up his design, he would have flopped. By all means, I'm no character designer but Penny herself is harmless imo, maybe it could use some tweaks but it's far from the worse I've seen. I think we just need to get more used to seeing Penny that more people will come around to her.

Sometimes I'll get through an area and it feels like it was sloppy or not really done in the most efficient or smoothest way and it's all I can do not to retry just to see if I can figure out how it was meant to be approached. It's also strange that, generally side scrolling platformers a are the more straight forward games with the 3D counterparts being usually the more confusing ones, but I feel the opposite here. is there camera control? or is the camera locked? thats what is holding me back from buying this game
@maninblack341011 ай бұрын
The camera works really well, I wouldn’t want to have to fumble with it while trying to use the controls. What decent platformer has camera controls? Only one I can think of off the top of my head is jak and Daxter, but it was a pretty slow platformer and for the fast sections they took control away.

Camera is locked. You can angle it slightly, but you do not have full control

@@D_H_13 I mean, odyssey’s the only Mario with camera controls that use the analog stick because of the sandbox style levels. And even then it takes control away a lot of the time. This game is more like 3D world with linear levels.
@D_H_1311 ай бұрын
@@maninblack3410 it doesn't take control away, it adds control. I was afraid it was more like 3dword than Mario64. With no camera controls and ugly character design I guess I'll be passing on this game

The movement system is insanely fun to toy with but in my experience, the game has a bit of a lack of polish, and the environments being so hyper colorful can be very distracting. Im on the second boss and I got killed during a cutscene, so theres also a bit of jank and lack of polish since Ive also clipped through random walls and stuff too. One area I saw a red pole sticking out and thought i could swing on it, but nope just a part of the world decoration which got me killed. My biggest problem though is those damn penguins, theyre inconsistent to hit and too tanky for how many there are. Idk why they take so many hits to actually take out, but if they latch on to you its so difficult to actually get them off which can result in very unfair deaths. The only move ive seen that consistently shakes them off is the double jump but it usually only gets 1-2 off of you. I think its pretty fun and speedrunners are gonna go nuts with the game, but it needed more time for polish and has a lot of tedious elements to it as well.
@stickzman11 ай бұрын
I think the penguins are designed that way b/c you're not supposed to fight them, you're supposed to evade them. Any move should break them off, a dash, double jump, whirl pull, etc. The idea is to shake them and keep going
@darcidious9911 ай бұрын
@@stickzman see that would be fine if the moves actually knocked them off though. Like I said for me the only move that does it consistently is just the double jump, most other moves just don't help for some reason. Could be just a me issue maybe but I've tried every move including the spin attack and it just won't knock em off.
@sergiomonty11 ай бұрын
