Hey, just a quick note to say I really enjoyed your video (and this follow up), and hope that you do more videos on historic Detroit architecture and culture. Thank you.

just watched your great video on the building and now this. It is clear you take great care in your research and in making your videos. You earned a new subscriber! (Only been to Detroit once by the way but I appreciate good history and architecture and video quality!)

Please keep making videos. Detroit history is something that is so sadly ignored (speaking as a former presenter at Greenfield Village). Your videos are great.

I must be getting old, I remember then the Penobscot was still the tallest building in Detroit, and the Renaissance Center was just a big hole in the ground. This would have been around 1973-74.

My uncle was the maintenance director of the Penobscot building, and it's absolutely true that the building is falling apart and not getting the maintenance it needs, because the owners are unwilling to invest and upgrade the building and do what's necessary to make it nice again.

Ive lived in the Detroit metro area my whole life and I still didn't know that much about the history of Detroit! I wish we had a building above 1000ft in Detroit I wish Detroit could compete with New York like a long time ago... when I think of big cites in the US what comes to mind first is New York, Chicago and La but not Detroit unfortunately and its because these cities all have a building above 1000 feet... I wish Detroit did too... we need to go higher!

You almost did back in the mid 20s when the Book Tower was originally planned and designed. The Book Tower was supposed to be 81 floors and well over 1000 feet. However it ended up only its current 44 floors and Detroit along with Philadelphia were the two big major cities with no buildings over 1000 feet.

Love the original video, and really appreciate the follow-up. It's very well put together, and although I've lived in California longer, I feel the 7 years I spent in Metro Detroit for High School and a bit more... I have a special spot for the city and love videos that highlight it's hidden beauty, as well as all of the rebirth activities underway. I feel proud to say that I lived in Detroit at the beginnings of its rebirth in the turn of the century.

Great follow up video, Jordan! Thank you so much for your explanation of the rights to use photographs, postcards or just about everything else that might be owned by someone else when that content is used in a monetized video.

These buildings were built before Europe invaded with immigrants in survival mode by a Balanced society that lived with if not were the natives. Then they restore it put a new plaque on it and say they built it and when it was built.

Nice job on your 'exactitude.' While talking about corrections, for those who read things on Wikipedia, that website is not totally correct about the naming of the Penobscot building. Whoever contributed to that article wrote, "The building is named for the Penobscot, a Native American tribe from Maine." But maybe they got this wrong because they quoted the 'supposed' building dedication which states, "- a stream named for the powerful tribe of Penobscot Indians." First, Murphy didn't name the building for the Native American tribe, but rather the river and region of Maine where he lumbered, which was known by the English given name at that time of 'Penobscot.' Second, the 'stream' (haha - it certainly is no meager STREAM - neither one of the four branches, and certainly not the main branch) - but anyway, the river is not 'named for the powerful tribe of Penobscot Indians.' Rather, the Penobscots GAVE the river its name (sort of) as they named it, Pa'nauwmbs'kek, which has the meaning of 'fall of a river near the ledges.' This refers to Oldtown Falls, near Indian Island in Maine where the Penobscots lived. But the Penobscot River spans 270 miles from near the New Hampshire border at Penobscot Pond, all the way to the ocean at Penobscot Bay, and that English name is applied to the entire river. Anyway, just thought we'd make the subtle correction to Wikipedia for the history.

Why do you show so many shots of the David Stott Tower when the subject is the Penobscot group?

Copyright lasts 70 years from the death of the originator. If the photos were taken in the 1920's or 1930's you are probably on solid ground. Photos in collections owned by the building owners get into "work for hire" issues; I'm not a lawyer so I can't comment on that. It might be worth your time to access a good resource on copyright issues to clear up what you can and cannot use.
