I always liked this scene. The lone tower standing far and above the city representing Griffith's lifelong ideal to stand above everything. At that moment, Griffith's single desire was to keep Guts as the tool to achieve his dream and points his blade directly at him. Guts, with a newfound purpose to become something greater, is resolved and stands firm on his feet, with his blade reaching to the sun, above Griffith's tower. In truth, it was probably just fancy shot, but it always seemed like a painting to me.

Great interpretation. I think it was the Berserk subreddit(not R/Berserklrjerk) where I came across an interpretation of this scene that this is a foreshadowing of Griffith's downfall and to the eclipse. OP put forward that the Japanese arts, be it paintings or scriptures, focus heavily on the cycle of seasons. Griffith's mental downfall begins with his loss in this duel. This point marks the end of winter and beginning of summer/spring. It goes along the lines that Griffith's years of glory have died and Guts' new chapter in his life begins. This scene also foreshadows the eclipse because the way Guts' sword superimposes the sun. It looks like a solar eclipse.

I had similar thoughts. I treated that spreadsheet more as a monochromatic work of art because of how many classic themes it had within it. Too bad many Berserk fans I have encountered were too ignorant to notice or even consider such things in Miura's art, aside from just praising the quality of the whole manga's art style. It was not only detailed, but they also had soul and depth.

Freedom of choice is perhaps not quite as much of a thing in Berserk. Griffith was clearly fated not to die, much as he was fated to lose everything. In many ways you could consider Berserk a very fatalistic series with only people like Skull Knight and Guts, ones who can actually defy it due to the nature of their existence between both realms.

The saddest part about this scene, I think, is that Guts and Griffith didn't really need to fight. Guts' dream was to be an equal in Griffith's eyes, which he concluded meant having to leave Griffith and pursue his dream. Griffith needed Guts, not just to pursue his dream but on a more visceral level that even he didn't fully understand. In many ways, they already had what they wanted. But in many more ways, their paths couldn't be the same.

I disagree, Griffith would be fucked anyways with the invasion later on and would fall into "his most desperate state in life" and the eclipse would happen. In fact, Guts walking out caused the downfall of the band of the hawks which could mean that some left willingly, deserters, and they wouldn't be involved in the apostles with in the forest or eclipse.
