Nucky doesn't look like a typical tough guy, which often worked in his favor. His enemies underestimated him and assumed that he was soft, but he could be harder and more vicious than anyone when the situation called for it. Steve Buscemi was the perfect choice to play the role.

@@Hriskataaa He was the only one who managed to live in Reservoir Dogs - he also shot himself out of the robbery and had the presence of mind to take the diamonds and to stash them before going to the warehouse. And then when he saw the idiotic Mexican standoff starting he had the sense to take the diamonds and get the f*** out of town (even if he didn't get far before the cops got him, but that wasn't his fault). Really he was the only one who kept a clear head at all.

This scene actually makes me respect Thompson more. Instead of allowing that last guy, an unlucky common Joe in the wrong place and wrong time, to be simply killed and robbed, he allows him the choice of living by giving over his car and is prepared to even pay recompense.

Don't forget the elevator "ding" part. That was integral to the build up. And also, it's called a "truck in". In film terms, "zooming in" means adjusting the lens to magnify the subject/object without moving the camera. That shot of Nucky's face was done with camera on a dolly track trucking in on him. :)

The man who didn't take the money for the car was smart. If you see something like that, don't let any part of those people's world into your life. As the show constantly shows, there's no such thing as a 'simple', 'innocent' or 'honest' transaction with them, no matter how innocuous. Think I'm overreacting? Imagine a lunatic like Gyp finds out this man's car was used by Nucky to get away. You think it's beyond the mercurial Mr. Rosetti to take this man's life simply to illustrate a warning not to help his prey escape? It's best the man appears unwilling or uninvolved.

When Nucky told Jimmy he wasn't seeking forgiveness he was full of shit. The fact he did the right thing this entire clip, protected his assistant whom he respected sincerely and almost valued as family, and even offered the passerby a fair amount of money for his car (for the day) instead of just robbing him speaks volumes as to how big his heart truly was

I think that line was more for Nucky than Jimmy. He felt terrible about Jimmy. Not just having to kill him, but for what he did to his mom. He bore responsibility for the whole nature of Jimmy’s wretched existence. He lived with that on his shoulders. I’m sure that every time he performed an act of decency, he wondered how far it went to balancing out his sins.

There were a few references made to a life debt owed. If I remember right it had some to do with helping Mr Kessler flee germany and make a new life for himself. He had a family or something and I think Nucky supports them financially. I could be wrong, it has been a while.
