The score shown here does not contain the dissonant "shadow lines" that Sinclair incorporated into this recording (those "wrong" notes you hear near the end of the first movement). According to Sinclair, Ives initially removed the "shadow lines" from his sketches, but later asked that they be restored. Apparently, this never happened as the published score doesn't contain them. Sinclair decided to put them back in. For comparison, listen to Bernstein's NYPO recording; he used the published score without the dissonant lines. Thank you Pentameron for uploading this.

A grand work. One hear the influence of Brahms and Bruckner and Reger perhaps, but it is unmistakably turned into Ives. One of the better performances I have heard. Thank you for sharing.

Ives builds his innovations from traditional American themes, folklore and traditions, here the "camp meeting". The orchestra is rather reduced: woodwinds by 1, 2 horns, one trombone.

I can see why he would call the award he got for this a 'badge of mediocrity,' most of the rest of what he wrote is so much better than this, this is disappointing to listen to after listening to his other works.

It is still a basis for those works if you’re reading into this from earlier romantic or late classical, since what he later does predates new methods for meter.
