The brilliance of the individual members aside, the sound is incredible. I have the nagging feeling that in spite of all the advances in technology, modern live sound is really missing something. For a start, it's almost a non-existent occurrence these days to find a singer who doesn't have the mic halfway down their throat. Even a 'how-to-use-a-mic' video I saw recently has the tutor kissing the damn thing...
@blackmore45 жыл бұрын
The sound question pt 2: I realize that misplaced rock 'n' roll (Spinal Tap) bravado of amps-up-to-11 silliness is partially responsible (for comparatively lousy modern sound) but surely there's more to it? Then again, if you're as good as this, there's no need to bludgeon with decibels and effects. You just pick up the instrument and play it.

Thisis certainly one of my favorite cips on KZbin. I can't really say it any better than others have already (talking about sexual tension between Jansch & McShee, etc.) but it astonishes me that a song that really doesn't even seem to stand out particularly in their recorded oevre in this performance is just so riveting and amazing. * Thou dost speak’st very highly of Bert Jansch. Did ye know that in 1965 he shared a room wi’ Donald Philipp Leitch, and the latter wrote a song in his honour that same year called « Bert's Blues » ? But who is Donald Philipp LEITCH ? I thou thee, thou dear Black Bilious Hard Luck, I offer thee a friendly bargain : I'm ready tae talk tae thee ‘bout this Sco'ish Donald, if thou findest me a left-handed mug. An’ thou shalt shine in thy Academy…. In 1970, I shared a flat wi’ an Englishman called Ayden and he told me that in Lunnon (London), he rented a furnished room where on one of the walls, Bert J. had written in pencil the first two verses of an unknown song.

Dear Black Bilious Hard Luck, I think thou upset me a lot. I am the author of the message I sent thee. Art thou able tae imagine that a simple frog-eater is capable of a-possessin’ great musical knowledge combined wi’ an exceptional sensitivity which allowed me tae discover treasures, tae appreciate the exceptional qualities in exceptional singers and musicians ? Truthfully, my extraordinary abilities represent real suffering. That of nae being able tae share my knowledge because in this f*cked up France, there art only eejits (idiots), incapable of liking good music. Git it or nae ? Ye didnae answer my question. Who is Donald Philipp LEITCH ? He hath recorded 40 albums since 1964. He hath always bin my favorite singer and his sensitivity and his gifts in poetry are the same as mine. In the 70s, he was on British TV ev’ry week. Just figure out that Donald P. L. the poet, the troubadour, the pied piper, the minstrel, the 60' and 70' american & british young generations' figurehead, the fine spirit drugs clairvoyant far ahead of his time hath always bin wrong treated, public ignored, treated as a Zimmerman's copyist, as a bisexual (Holy him) and much mo’ and o’er that, he did inspired beloved Jeff' Plane (song : Fat angel) and clever Stephen Stills (song : Season of the witch) and HOW ! An’ e’en tae the music o’ the 1970s ye art a-listenin'. But, mahself, I already hast realized it since 1965 and alle his exceptional qualities. E’en in Englandes, the land o’ the poor Saussenach, he is very little known and these stoopid English people hast nae bin able tae perceive the substantial core of his musical, poetic and hyis inner Self. On the other hand, he is mo’ appreciated in Scotland and in his hometown : Glasga (Glasgow). Now it's yer turn tae discover him... So Black Bilious Hard Luck, who is Donald Philipp LEITCH ? Hello from France. @@BilisNegra

I think that chemistry is just friendly band members looking out for each other. She seems slightly unsure of her cue and he's kinda smiling and keeling eye contact so they come in together on the chorus harmony. Also I've heard a live version where he comes in with the chorus where he should have continued the last verse and it completely throws her. They salvage it of course but - I imagine this was a running gag within the band. Cos they all seem humble and professional

I keep playing this song. It's so contained, but it ~really~ swings. The band is not particularily smiling and trying to connect or be accepted by the audience, the audience is already so tuned into them. The band is performing and grooving their art, and hardly moving. The band is going on a 'journey' and the audience is very focused and goes with them. The looks between Bert and Jacqui.... wow.

The fusion of jazz, rock and folk produced some brilliant bands. I thinks it's been largely downhill ever since with too much emphasis on presentation.
