So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen. Some of the moments paying respect were: The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded), obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video, the four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, and the overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover. -The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do. -Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve. -The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on KZbin, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing. Also brian mays of queen upon hearing this posted it to his page with the word "ENJOY"

I noticed Kevin singing on that same part and how his voice would cut off to do the percussion but Kirsten held out the notes. No one else seems to realize how much Kevin is doing on this song, singing and percussion, going back and forth between the two.

The panning ( 3:47 ) was present in the original by Queen. 4:03 "Ooh! Oh, wow! There's me thinking 'Oh, just back to their original, you know, just sittin' on the couch singing along...'" That was a deliberate reference on their part. *This* couch is taking them on a trip down Memory Lane, where so many of their early videos were just five young people, sitting on a couch, singing their hearts out. 8:50 "Ooh! Avi's voice!" Yep. And his smile. Avi has such a beautiful smile. Actually, they all do; it's one of the things I like most about Pentatonix (not that there's anything I like less about them). 9:33 And there it is, the Mitch-slap we were all waiting for. And since it *did* take you by surprise I have to believe that this actually was your first time watching this. It's counter-intuitive, but the megaphone had nothing to do with the guitar solos; those are all Mitch. He does them live with nothing but a microphone. The megaphone was just something Mitch saw lying around on the set and thought would make a cool prop, and it's been confusing people ever since. In the operatic section the interesting lighting is provided by five flashlights. Ingenious, and very effective. 15:15 "Was that Mitch on the A-flat 4?" Yes, it was. However, please note that Kirstin could have done it just as well as Mitch; there is some genuine doubt about which of them actually has the higher voice. For angelic high vocal arrangements (say, "The Prayer") give me Mitch any day. But when it comes to belting out the high notes Kirstin is equally talented. Approximately 18:00 The starry sky is a tribute to Brian May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics. The four shooting stars are for the four members of Queen. The shot of Pentatonix lying on the couch while Mitch finishes Freddy Mercury's solo is a reference to the cover art of Queen's _Sheer Heart Attack_ album. In case it isn't obvious by now, Pentatonix loves Queen, and they love "Bohemian Rhapsody." It was important to them to get this song right. They did a fine job.
@bachwalla2 жыл бұрын
Something that I think gets overlooked is Kevin during the "let him go" section is how deftly he switches from singing "let him go" with Kirstie and Scott, then immediately beatboxing for the response from Avi, Mitch and Scott. And that Scott is on both sides of the call and response in that section

My understanding, once PTX decided to do this cover, they waited and worked with it for 5 years before they felt right about producing it. Mitch, when it came to the guitar solo called out "get me a megaphone, I've got this!" may or may not be true, but he got it fine and when doing this live, he doesn't use the megaphpne and he still sounds perfectly the same. Great reaction Jen!
@margretrosenberg4202 жыл бұрын
Actually, they always wanted to do it, but didn't think they could do it justice, so they waited five years until they finally thought they were ready. (My personal guess, and I emphasize that it's *just* a guess, is that Mitch's discovery of his inner electric guitar was the tipping point.) After they finally decided it was time they still had to create the arrangements and choreography, figure out how to motorize a couch, rehearse, and I don't know what-all. Judging only by the dates, those jobs took several more months, maybe a year or two. I believe the megaphone was a last-minute addition - Mitch saw it lying on the set and thought it would make a good prop. It isn't doing anything to the guitar solo; that's entirely Mitch. And now I'm kind of wondering whether we'll see him in a violin duet with Lindsey Stirling.

Brian May is actually Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist. His PhD thesis a survey of radial velocities in the zodiacal dust cloud" was published in 2007 and is a popular astronomy book of the same name. He started his research in 1970 and then stopped to run around the world in this rock band named Queen. Maybe you've heard of them maybe you haven't I had to Google them. That's sarcasm. The megaphone in a prop. Mitch does not use it in the live performances. the voice you hear when they're looking at the stars is the same voice Mitch uses with the megaphone . The shot at the sky is homage to Brian May. Brian May was so impressed with the video that he posted it on all of his social media sites. The part where Mitch is lying down on the couch and Kevin and Avi are walking beside it are to represent the pallbearers carrying Freddie's coffin . The shot at the end when they're looking up at the sky always puzzled me because there are four shooting stars and I always wondered about that because there are 5 members in PTX. I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. They worked on this song for five or six years to get it where it is right now. This is a link to a live version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I think it was filmed off of somebody's phone. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWKzlp-Aft17irM There should be a video of them doing Bohemian Rhapsody from September 29th at the Hollywood Bowl. Check out PTX official or tea time with Travis and it'll be on either one of those

Love how you dissect the video and point out little things PTX does in their composition. The Mitch slap got you with the electric guitar, the Mitch Slaps and Kevin Kicks are what I live for. I implore you to watch it live or a live recording, even through a phone video/audio you can see the megaphone is just a prop.

This is one of the best songs they've ever done, musically speaking - and that's saying something. As good as they all are, and as amazing as the guitar solo is (legit voice only, the megaphone was just a prop, he didn't actually use it.), Kevin steals this entire song, for me. I've never heard any vocal percussionist (including Layne Stein of Voice Play and Adam Rupp of Home Free, two of the masters in the industry) "play" drums so realistically like that in a song. And the drums are the backbone of this song, all of its heart and soul are predicated on the pound and thump of the drums, even in the original. So for Kevin to KILL this with such PRECISION and perfection of sound absolutely steals this entire song. It's one of the most incredible things I've ever heard someone do with just their voice, it's an absolute mastery of lip and tongue tension, and breathing. I love this song, I love everything about it, it's by far the best version I've ever heard of it that wasn't Queen's themselves. And I'd argue it's right up there with the original. Freddie's voice is just so unique, you can't match that, even with the Godsent voice that is Mitch Grassi. But Mitch is so close to Freddie in tone and vocal quality, there's no one out there that can touch how close PTX comes to replicating the original. It's a master class.

An amazing rendition from start to finish. None of it is easy to sing but there is one bit that shows the incredible talent and ability of all of them. That part is the tag, in particular the final resolve of the penultimate chord and how the resolve the chord. If you listen very carefully you will hear the resolve happen in parts. It is a 4 step resolve. Mitch is holding that lead note while the chord rotates. There is a split second where the chord doesn't quite "work". That is when Mitch's talent shines. Without even thinking about it, he raises his note 1/64 of a tone and then the final chord is complete in a way that only experienced a capella singers can manage.

(This ended up being longer than when I started. Please bear with me!) As always, I love your reactions. Between your facial expressions and your commentary... you are just the BOMB. You mentioned the panning and 'engineering.' The left/right pans are almost exactly the same as Queen's. That struck me the first time I heard this, so I checked. I've been listening to PTX for a long time... WAY before I discovered reactions. BEFORE listening, I thought, "even the great PTX can't possibly do this song justice purely a cappella." WRONG!! Back to your reaction.... Your ear is better than mine, and I'm pretty snobby about having a good ear. I have an advantage over you on this particular piece because I must have listened to this (the PTX official version) critically dozens of times. You stopped and held your heart (and commented) the second time around with Avi's "any way the wind blows.' That was the original bass line (instrument versus vocal, obviously). You called out the harmonies in "Got to go" as nice! Interesting. The first several times I heard this, that deviation from the original actually bothered me. I got used to it pretty quick though. Now I accept and applaud it as the "PTX Twist." As someone mentioned, the megaphone is just a physical prop. It isn't functional. But WAY cool, right?? Your commentary during the "opera section" was perfect! And your obvious amazement (facial expressions) were so real and genuine! Amazing, right?? Then Mitch NAILS that A flat 5. (sigh). The "groovy" chord you mention fight after Scott's 'spit in my eye' is nearly the same chord as the accent used in the original. You interpreted the one part as 'collapsing and sleeping.' I thought it was echoing being shot (referencing "just shot a man") Watch the head snaps, especially from Kirsten and Mitch. As much as I enjoy ALL of your reactions, this one is clearly my VERY FAVORITE reaction that I have seen from you! I'm glad I'm a subscriber AND follower!

Really miss Avi as bass. Being a bass player, I think he is the best of all the bass singers in that role.
