Had to block out the video unfortunately because KZbin blocked it, but I enjoyed it and gave it a go.

Speaking of Kevin's ability to do several things at once, watch him in their covers of Shallow, Radioactive and Say Something where he plays the cello AND beatboxes. Unbelievable.
@margretrosenberg420

The guy with the visor who's beatboxing is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth). Kevin is an incredible person. In addition to being one of the best beatboxers on the planet (possibly THE best) he's classically trained on piano, saxophone, and cello. He's performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on the saxophone and once on the cello. He has a lovely tenor voice, and is known for the great beauty of his falsetto register (which I believe actually goes higher than Mitch's). He has a pre-med degree from Yale and he speaks five languages, including Mandarin. It was a viral video of Kevin beatboxing *while* playing the cello that originally brought him to the attention of the trio and Avi, back when they were desperately searching for a beatboxer to fill out their number and give them a percussion section so they could audition for _The Sing-Off._ Kevin invented the technique himself; he calls it "celloboxing."

Don't worry about fading out the video like you did - it's still discernable - and with their sme blockings it's practically necessary to do that to get around it. We're here for YOUR reaction, if we want no pauses or interuptions or normal video then we'll go to the original! This one won them their first Grammy as someone else said - they were the winners of the 3rd season of the Sing Off - and after moving to California, their winning record company dropped them saying that there wasn't a demand for acapella so they took it to KZbin and got a new recording contract. This cost them $400 to make and they filmed it in Avi and Kevin's apartment closet and edited it in their kitchen. You can tell Avi's eyes are so irritated by the contacts his eyes are red - and Kevin couldn't wear them at all so they put him in the viser. If you like this type of sound, check out Love Again, it's an original of theirs and very EDM techno s ounding.

No... fan lore mixes up so many details nowadays. Early PTX videos of the group singing live - like the "couch videos" - were recorded on Mitch's iPad, not the ones with actual music videos like this one. The supplies were $400, the finished product cost more. The audio was recorded in a closet after their studio time fell through and the video was recorded by in the kitchen... but Fifgen Films did that and professionally edited offsite. There's a film and lighting blog out there to this day with a writeup by Fifgen about the process, complete with behind the scenes photos.

@@perfectkismet I guess I never specified but I did not mean to say that the TOTAL video only cost 400 dollars, but meaning more the supplies for it, sorry for the miscommunication.

There was only one iPad recording--"Moves Like Jagger", and it wasn't a couch video. But you're right that their early stuff is very basic, and from what I understand, the Patreon account was originally set up to fund more elaborate videos. signing with RCA made that much less of an issue.

This production presented NARAL with something of a conundrum. It was obvious that it should be nominated for a Grammy, but there was no appropriate category available. So NARAL changed the category of "Best Arrangement Instrumental" to "Best Arrangement Instrumental or A Cappella," just so they could nominate Pentatonix. And then, of course, award them the Grammy. Their second Grammy, for "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," was in the same category. In both cases, Ben Bram (also known as "the sixth member of Pentatonix") shared the Grammy since he's always listed as their arranger.

Thanks for this reaction. These guys never cease to amaze me in what 5 people can accomplish with no instruments but their own vocals and bodies. No problem with having to overlay filters or text on the video. We all know that Sony is aggressive in blocking PTX videos.

The light haired guy is Scott Hoying, one of the first three members of Pentatonix (Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch). Those three are called "the trio." Normally Scott is a blond; I'm not sure whether they bleached his hair and eyebrows for this video or powdered them; my guess would be powder, since it's easier.

@Gwennedd

@@michaelmayo8117, part of the reason for those ice blue contacts was because they only had a budget of $400 for getting supplies and lighting for this video. They shot it a closet and edited it on the kitchen counter of Kevin and Avi's apartment. It was of course sent off for post production work, but the unusual arrangement and the fact that an a capella group could reproduce the style and sounds of techno music was unheard of some 9 years ago. It earned them their first Grammy.

Part of the effect of the eyes is that it's edited so that they hardly blink at all. The big debate is whether Avi is wearing any clothes. There's a recent live version of this from last year's Hollywood Bowl concert -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2mzi2qVgLJ6g5Y
