Kevin is a true Renaissance man - He started the piano at age 4, the cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. At 12 years old, he was selected as the principal saxophonist of the United States Collegiate Wind Band and toured Europe during the summer for three weeks. He soloed and performed in a piano trio at Carnegie Hall as the winner of the American Fine Arts Festival, and soloed a second time on alto saxophone for PBS’s special "From the Top at Carnegie Hall". Spent a year in China learning Mandarin and researching neurobiology. Graduate of Yale. And #1 on his list, he is husband of Leigh and father of Kaia.

Has their beatboxer entered any competitions? Well, let’s see…..he played Carnegie Hall, twice…..once on saxophone and once on cello. He developed a skill called Cello Boxing…..that’s how PTX discovered him on his viral video. All this while graduating pre-med from Yale. Lucky for us he chose a musical career instead of a medical one! PTX won their first Grammy for this. Their second Grammy was for, “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”…..an actual song with no words, performed by a group with no instruments…..go figure! SO much in store for you to discover! Can’t wait to share this journey with you!

Has Kevin been in any beatboxing competitions, you ask? Probably not exactly. But... He's an overachiever from an overachiever family. Dad is a physician (specifically, psychiatrist). Mom is a nurse. Kevin had a high school education that encouraged/pushed him to always be his best. You can find a KZbin vid of him performing saxophone at Carnegie Hall when he was 17. He has an undergrad degree from Yale which includes all his pre-med requirements plus some music courses and East Asian Studies. He's just never taken time (so far) to actually go to Med school. He speaks English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. As a Yale student, he went on a multipurpose goodwill mission to Communist China, and while there he invented or developed the art of Celloboxing. Back in the States, he also picked up a Music degree from Berklee college. Right about the time that he graduated from Berklee and released his first Celloboxing vid ("Julie-O"), Pentatonix picked him up. Here's one of his solo vids, where he engineers and loops tracks while performing live. Just tempting you to watch it. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3jNmGRvaM1nhc0

If you want to see the group from its beginnings, you can watch their performances on season 3 of the Sing Off. Episode 12 is the one that really propelled them according to a lot of opinions. Avi and Kevin joined the existing trio of Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch because you had to have at least five members to compete on the show.

I was so excited to see you do this reaction, knowing how much you loved this group and you'd get to see them do something near impossible. They won a Grammy for this, in fact the Grammy people had to open a new genre for them. They also filmed this themselves and used Avi and Kevin's kitchen counter and a closet to film in. The budget was only $400. There was of course production and major editing added. I' think you should check out Love Again. It's an original and has a heavy edm beat like Daft Punk.

Thanks for your enthusiastic reaction! As others have said in the comments, Pentatonix won a recording contract as part of their prize for winning the 3rd season of the "Sing Off" but were dropped after a week and told that acapella was just a novelty that would not sell; no one would continue to be interested in listening to acapella music. They continued to post videos on their own on their website and millions of fans worldwide listened. They scraped up $400 between them and made this video in the Kitchen and closet of the apartment that Kevin and Avi shared and it won them their first Grammy award and opened more doors for them (there is a cool video of Scott's acceptance speech for this on You Tube). If you are "thirsty for more Kirstie", check out her lead in their cover of "Say Something" which also features some amazing celloboxing from Kevin. One of the other commenters here (DougRay Phillips) shared the link for Kevin Olusola's cover of "Down" on his solo channel--that one will blow you away!

I recommend "Mad World". I often listen to it on headphones, because although it does not have the most advanced video production - the way they made it, it's pure audio enjoyment and harmonies. A very active-listening song indeed. PS: And Matt, the new bass, sounds really great up there while Scott is covering the bass for him. So if you want to hear Matt's higher register, there it is, one of the best songs with him.

And if I would add one more that I think is at the peak of auditive enjoyment: "Shallow" it is. I don't know why, but those stand out to me, when listening on headphones and just letting them massage my ears with the audio these songs have.

Hello Matts Reacts. Glad that you are doing another PTX song This is Grammy #1 for Pentatonix. This was done on a budget recorded in a closet to get the audio, filmed in their kitchen, with them doing their own makeup for about 200-400 dollars. Please do keep going - almost 300 songs - you are only at the surface of what Pentatonix can do. They are masters of their craft. Remember this is A Capella - including the electronic re-mix sounds. BTW - there is a live video of them doing this, standing around in what looks like a living room. You know their names now - well done - Kirsite is short for Kirstin and is pronounced so that it rhymes with thirsty. Suggest Bohemian Rhapsody next. Glad that you are a fan now - are you a Pentaholic yet?. Love that comment - they brought their A Game - no their triple A Game. Kevin is a master beat boxer for sure.

The Five Faces of New Pentaholics 1. The most common is the Mitch Slapped. Commonly found when Mitch is heard for the first time in Hallelujah, The Prayer, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and doing Aha! at the Star Vista. 2. The Wide Eyed Look of Disbelief. Normally found when you hear their Wall of Sound. Found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Imagine, and Mad World. 3. The I Didn’t Want It to End face. Most commonly found after listening to the 90s Dance Medley. It can also be found after listening to all their medleys and evolutions. 4. The Teary Eyed Look. This is commonly found when listening to an emotional song of theirs or just the sheer beauty of their work. Commonly found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Hallelujah, Amazing Grace, Imagine, The Prayer and most especially Thank You. 5. The What Did I Just Hear Face. Happens when Pentatonix starts strong, or when you hear a really special note or Kevin sound. Is usually accompanied by rewinding the video or song to make sure your ears really heard what they heard. Those times are too many to list, but the most common rewind at the start moment is the beginning of Sound of Silence.
