I LOVE that you get how great this storytelling is. Lots of people dismiss this song because it isn't as polished as the other end-of-season songs, but I remember finding this mashup completely THRILLING when they brought this out. #12 is still the best, it's like their Pokemon evolution into a fully fledged performance group, but this song showed me how much creativity they would continue to bring us. Did you notice how Mitch & Kevin are totally acting out "friend group peeping the drama"?
@wendischambach6181
@wendischambach6181 Жыл бұрын
I would respectfully degree as to the level of polish on this song. I can't imagine how to mash these two particular songs any differently to sound better because of the type of songs they are. You almost have to make it drama because the songs are jumpy themselves, no love ballads there. I think they (and several other groups) have gotten even better thru the years but at this time, I'm not sure I'd heard a better mesh into a single performance. Maybe I cut them slack because of the degree of difficulty here but it was one of my favorite performances, along with "Video Killed the Radio Star," "Born to be Wild," and yes, the final performance of "Dog Days Are Over." Since their win, in listening to a number of their songs, I found I had not heard the originals. When I go back and listen to the originals, I find that I prefer their cover. I think it's a combination between their talent and the arrangement that required for an acapella performance. That said, I agree. They are some of the best and their creativity is incredible. Kudos to their acting which sold the "story" in this one.

“Bitchin’-is a somewhat dated term that has made several comebacks. It is rare to hear it today. Believed to have originated from the surfer crowd of Southern California, USA, circa 1960s-1970s” (The Online Slang Dictionary) It means “very good,” “excellent,” “cool,” “awesome.”

So a few things before you listen to #12 Dog Days Are Over. 1. This is the final performance that counts. After this the show opened up the voting to people at home to determine the winner. 2. Scott had no voice the day of the show. They’d been doing the show for weeks doing 2 songs a show plus the group opening number. PTX was spent and dog ass tired. 3. PTX had a disastrous dress rehearsal. They couldn’t get it together and Scott’s voice was shot. They resigned themselves to the fact they were going to lose. 4. If you can, listen to it straight through without stopping. 5. If you’ve never heard the original from Florence & the Machine go do that now. Enjoy!

one thing you have to realize is that not only were they singing two songs per week at this point, they were also having to do at least one group performance as well. they were exhausted and I think their exhaustion, on top of their nerves was stressing them out to the point that they really weren't sure if they could keep up with the pace they were going. that being said, of course we all know they pulled it out in the end because they're amazing but it wasn't without a lot of blood, sweat and tears. not to mention the fact that the trio was only 19 at the time. can you believe it?! so many kudos to them!

Great job. I've seen a few people react to this and not mention the staged drama going on (probably focusing on the music), but you picked it up on the first view. The "trio" of Scott, Mitch and Kirsten all did children's theater growing up (that's how they met), so they know about staging and acting.

I think this performance was brilliant. And I have watched the whole season. There were 5 groups still in the competition at this performance and none of them did near as well with this round. They each sang the 2 different songs, but none of them had the blend that welded the 2 songs together like Pentatonix did, Genius! And, you'll notice the judges no longer have any criticisms to offer them. Great reaction,

BRAVO! You are one of very few Reactors to pick up on everything that was going on musically and dramatically. People somehow don't single this out as one of PTX's "star" performances from The Sing-Off, but for me it's right up there with the very best. And although they've done great mash-ups since then (Daft Punk, New Rules, etc.), this one, arranged and performed within a week's time at the start of their career, matches anything they've done since. It's quite amazing, and I can watch it again and again with great pleasure. Good on you for being so appreciative!

Scott, Mitch and Kirstie first met as kids doing community/musical theater. They grew up together developing that special, unique bond that still serves them so well today. What is sooo amazing is that they didn’t just FIND Kevin and Avi on such short notice for this contest, but that they “clicked” the way they did to give us all this gift that is Pentatonix. Kirstie has done a stint on Broadway already, but I could see all of them making that transition someday in something along the lines of ‘The Wizard of Ahhhs’. Acting just seems to be second nature to them, it shows in a lot of their sing-off performances.

The storytelling was absolute fire in this. It's a preview of what we'll get in later years from SuperFruit. It also, IMO, set the stage for groups like VoicePlay. Yeah, their vocals could've been a little better, Ben was right in that they were out of tune for part of one line. Big deal. Taken as a whole performance this was amazing, as always. It's certainly a peek into their medleys of their later career, too. Pentatonix is known for their transitions from one song to the next, how smooth they are, how seamless. Well, now we know where that started. The next performance is... The passion, the emotion outlay... You can SEE, when they're finished with the performance, just how drained they are, you feel it with them. And, to be there to witness the start of a brand new group of young superstars... there really are no words for that. Great reaction, D. I love seeing you picking up on all the little subtleties in the performances. You help me to better appreciate a group I'm already a super fan of. Thank you, brudda. See you on the next one!

The storytelling in this was remarkable - you got it completely! And when Kirstie says it was all fake, Scott does the little "Yeah, talk talk!" with his hand. They completely wrote a story from the mashed-up lyrics. They are really the only group that did a real mix/mashup, which is something that has become one of their trademarks (see La La Latch). You asked about errors - note that Ben Folds called out their only real error in the series in this one's comments.

I'm sure someone has told you both of these things but Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie have been in musical theater together since they were 10 years old. The other thing about this performance is that Kelly Clarkson saw it and ever since has been a huge fan, so much so that she asked them to open for her on her tour!! You catch every little thing and I love that about you!! I also love how you appreciate every little thing about each bad member including Matt!! Love you and love your reactions so much!!! I'm pretty sure you've done "New rules x Are you that somebody" and "come along" but if not I suggest that.

I watched the YT clip on this show last year, and since then with lots of reactors. I got the remix idea and the general story PTX was acting out, but no one broke the details down like you just did. I have a whole new appreciation for the performance now. You linked the subtle parts of their story to the songs in a way that added colour and depth to the performance. Thanks for sharing your observations... #11 is now a new favourite!

I realize that I'm late to your party but it's been fun watching you watch their journey. I love that you loved this one. While I've heard that it was one of their least favorites, it is definitely one of mine. For one of the first times, we heard an arrangement that jumps between songs flawlessly and was a precursor (who knew at the time, right?) to their now-infamous "evolution of" mashups. The fact that they were storytelling with so much drama is a throwback to their musical theater back in their formative years. Broadway, the stage, a concert. They can do it all. What a blast!
@margretrosenberg420

This one is my favorite performance of theirs from _The Sing-Off,_ mostly because of that epic "fight" between Avi and Kevin. My ear isn't quite good enough to break it down, but I can certainly tell that it was masterful. Speaking of Avi, did you notice how when Scott was singing about not having enough money for Kirstin to be interested in him Avi was fingering his lapel, as if to say "That's right. Look at *my* nice leather jacket"? Wonderful acting, from all five of them. No, they did *not* know that they had it in the bag; you're talking with 20/20 hindsight there. Scott wasn't joking when he said that all of their voices were tired. _The Sing-Off_ was grueling. After each performance they received their assignment for the next performance and then had just a week to put something together, and they'd been doing it for two and a half months at this point. A week or two before this, Kirstin had been physically ill from the stress, to the point that they'd been afraid she'd be unable to even appear on stage, causing them to forfeit (with only 5 members PTX had no one to fill in if one person was incapacitated). Yes, they knew that they were incredibly talented, but they also knew that the trio was only 19 years old and Avi and Kevin weren't much older; they wouldn't be human if they hadn't had some misgivings. And, contrary to popular belief among pentaholics, PTX is fully and spectacularly human. Not sure, but I believe that "medley" doesn't quite cover "master mix." "Mash-up" might be closer, but it seems more complex even than that. What they did here went way beyond either of those things. They weren't just trading off between the two songs, they were singing them at the same time. Where they did trade off it would be a line from one song and then a one-line response from the other. They did a great job arranging this, working out the story line, figuring out how to perform it, just the whole thing. It's hard to believe that they managed it all in just a week.

I think this was their best performance, even with the slight moment of dissonance at one point between Scott and Kirsten that Ben Folds mentioned, because of the incredible job they did of blending the two songs into a fabulous storytelling. Everyone of them here with Avi, are fundamental, is the combination of the Scott, Mitch and Kristin great vocals, harmonies and the rhythm of Kevin and Avi (or Matt) that gives that Pentatonix sound, and in this case the arrangements and mix of song that they have been good since the Sing off, Britney medley and this were proves of that

This song is fantastic because of the arrangement and their performance. When you listen to the other mash ups from the night, they don't hold a candle to this arrangement. They were the only one to go back and forth seamlessly and merging both songs at the same time. All the other groups were like 1st song, 2nd song, just a bit of mash up at the end. Not these guys.

It’s funny now looking back at the manufactured drama the producers injected into these pre-performance segments. I’m sure it wasn’t all perfect though, since I’ve heard that they did most of the arrangements and choreo themselves vs. getting help from the show. Someone correct me if I have that wrong. Either way, they were amazing 10 years ago, and they are even that much more amazing today (as I listen to their new album Evergreen with tears rolling down my face).
