KZbin Alyssa Grenfell (that's her channel name, at least) reacted to this episode from the perspective of an ex-Mormon (as she grew up as one). She said, I think, that its all essentially accurate, the depiction of their beliefs and behaviors, but noted that they left out the darker side of it. But also admitted, I think, that it isn't always apparent on the surface and that obviously a lot of Mormons are still good people.

The Mormon church talks about most of this stuff now, but I watched this with my family when it was new and none of us had ever heard it and thought it was made up. The fact the church hid this stuff while SP told the truth was a big reason we aren’t Mormon anymore. A religion having crazy stories isn’t really anything special. But a religion that lies to its followers is harder to accept. There was always a saying in that church that “the people aren’t perfect but the church is”. I think that’s mostly backwards. The church itself might be full of shit, but the people are mostly kind and good. South Park always shows it that way.

As a former Mormon (I left before this episode). This ish is really what they believe and how they act. It’s the weirdest cult like group I’ve personally experienced. They kept tabs on me through asking the some of my family members how I was doing in casual conversations. They I’d get them sent to my house, had to jump through hoops to get my records completely remove. After like a dozen visits over a few years, finally I had to just be very frankly dickish (I’m usually not) about telling why I think this it’s BS, but happy for them if it works for them. Last time I had them come to my house. This episode was a banger (for my IMMEDIATE family anyway) TL;DR: this episode is 🔥, accurate, and Mormons are weird, as someone who still loves many of them in my family.

I grew up Mormon (now non religious) but don't really remember much about the teachings in detail. From what i do remember, this is more or less along the lines of what is believed. What i do know for a fact however is that Mormons have been some of the friendliest, welcoming, and selfless people I've ever known. From my experiences, they don't really try to force their religion on people. If a missionary comes to your door you just have to let them know that you aren't interested and they'll carry on after wishing you a nice day.

I met some Mormons, when I was going to see the Book of Mormon musical here in Germany. Now this musical has been produced by the creators of South Park (they have written the music, lyrics, dialogues and even sang the songs as demos). This musical absolutely ridicules the whole Mormon faith. These Mormons were actually using the occasion to promote their faith to others. Those were actual Mormons from the US on a mission in Germany. A friend of mine asked them, what they think of the musical and they said they liked it and did not care, if it makes fun of them. I wished to have talked longer to them, but we were late for the musical and that is why we had to go in. I also researched what some Mormons said about it on the internet and they generally like the musical, they even use it to promote their faith on their website ("The book is always better” and “You’ve seen the play, now read the book.”) Say about Mormons, what you want. But they seem to be able to take a joke and be generally nice about it. If we would all be a little bit like that (and not get offended with every occasion), society would be much better.

no, it not exagerated, the religion is just like that and the story, though summarized, is accurate, the thing is some ex-mormons are not ok with the last bit because stan is right, the mormon religion is not about being happy and helping others, it is about the money and the status, besides the religion is very racist (for example they think dark and red skin means you are descendant of the cursed), m manipulative as seen in the video and also conservative, did i said it is all about the money? just the same as scientology.

Yes joseph smith was a real person and the first modern prophet of the lords restored church. As a 14 year old teenager joseph smith was praying to find out which church he should join and while praying he was visited by both god and jesus this is what we know as "the first vision" He was told that no church was the correct church of christ

A few years later the angel moroni one of the peoples of nephi who were ancient israelites who came to north america after a man called lehi was given a vision that jerusalem was going to be destroyed and god commanded him to take his family and leave the city. The book of mormon is the third testament of the bible written by the nephites and other israelites of the new world all which are decendents of lehi and his family. The plates of the nephites which are the book of mormon were actually seen by eleven people that are called the eleven witnesses. three of them were shown the plates by the angel moroni and eiight of them by joseph smith. We latter day saints are very friendly people and it can be offputting for some people. Jesus visited the nephites after he died on the cross. Martin harris was one of the witnesses of the plates so while smith did use a hat he did see them

The 116 pages were stolen and not hidden by lucy harris. The book of mormon states in moroni: 10-4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Pretty much any religion. Like in christianity, after event of "resurrection" of Jesus, his followers were promised soon apocalypses and getting eternal lifes in heaven, but after many decades, closer to their lives ending, they start to ask questions how long they have to wait anymore, so the inventors of christianity had to slightly alter their promises, and apocalypses now had to happen in some vaguely future times. Its like when something isn't going in desired path, someone just didn't pray and worship enough, and you can't know what is will be "enough". Very convenient, right. )
