My favorite a capella group in the world - I like other groups but Pentatonix’ arrangements are so superb and clever, and I love that whether the song is one they’re covering by another artist or an original, their diction is so crisp and perfect, I can actually hear and understand every word. If you want to hear how great they sound live, try Popspring performance 2016, which includes the best Michael Jackson medley you’ll ever hear and a couple of great original songs, since some new listeners don’t realize they write original music as well. Every time I watch it, I marvel at the perfection in all four segments and that it’s live.

The difference between HF and PTX is that Pentatonix is more like a Ferrari to HF’s corvette, both are great cars, but one just has a bit more under the hood, and those sleek lines. I suggest checking out their Grammy winners first, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Daft Punk, and Jolene, the collaboration with Dolly Parton. I’ll subscribe for more.

A'Capella singing contest, "The Sing Off" in 2011, it's 3rd season (Home Free won the next year). Please consider reacting to "The Prayer", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "A Kiss From a Rose", "Gold". Live performances - "Pop Spring 2016" (3 original songs & 1 "Evolution of......" song.). Professionally (MTV) filmed. Loved both of your reactions. Thanks!

Pentatonix began in 2011 after winning The Sing Off, the same as Home Free. Great videos of both groups from the show are on KZbin. They have many great videos such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Hallelujah (700,000 views and counting), Daft Punk (their first Grammy winning cover), The Prayer, Kiss from a Rose and some really fun early ones Can’t hold us and Thrift Shop where they rap. They have a heavy focus on Christmas music with many great upgrades of Amazing Grace, Mary Did You Know, Carol of the Bells, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, O Holy Night. The list of videos is incredible. They have amazing live performances on KZbin as well. Those are definitely worth checking out because they are so close to their studio performances. They also recently were featured on the Oscars 2024 opening number. They are an incredibly talented group of singers and performers. Welcome to the world of Pentaholics. It’s a fun place to be.

Welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole! It's a deep one, but I think you'll enjoy the journey! Avi Kaplan (who was featured in the Home Free video Ring of Fire) was the bass singer with Pentatonix (aka PTX) from it's beginning in 2011 (to compete in the a cappella competition TV show The Sing-Off) until the autumn of 2017. He announced his departure in the spring of 2017, for various personal reasons, and is now writing and performing as a solo artist - his latest album Feel Alright was just released a few weeks ago. Matt Sallee (3rd solo singer in this video) was selected as the new bass for PTX in a nation-wide blind audition, and was a "featured guest" during their Christmas tour in 2017 to make sure everyone was a good fit, officially joining the group in early 2018. Every video you see created since late 2017 will have Matt as the bass; everything prior to that will have Avi as the bass. There are 2 videos that are exceptions to this rule, both done without any bass singer at all: Dancing On My Own, done while Avi was still performing with the group in his final tour, and Away In A Manger, done after Avi completed his final tour but before Matt joined the group. In Dancing On My Own, Kevin Olusola (the beatboxer/vocal percussionist) plays cello while beatboxing (a technique Kevin invented which he calls "celloboxing"), and the cello's warm lower tones actually provides a sound very similar to what a bass singer would provide. It makes for a very interesting video! I'll recommend 3 videos: Hallelujah (their most popular video, approaching 750 MILLION views), Daft Punk (their 2nd most popular video (a measley 374 MILLION views), and the arrangement that won them their first of 3 Grammy Awards), and The Prayer, their cover of the Celine Dion/Andre Bocelli duet (which should have given them a 4th Grammy, if their record company had any brains). The first two are with Avi Kaplan, the last one is with Matt Sallee as bass. At least 2 of the 3 will provide a decent Mitch-slap - if no one else has explained it, I think you'll figure it out after listening to the songs.

Great reaction. Another one not to be missed is their new rendition of O Holy Night which came out this past Christmas. I love PTX but this one is so moving (and pretty much everything they do is, so I’m having trouble finding the right words to describe this one) that you truly don’t want to miss it. Maybe what touches me so much is the reverence while they’re performing it. At any rate, you’ll be blown away completely when you watch and hear it. I hope you won’t put it off until next Christmas. Thanks for the reaction.

The members of Pentatonix. In this song: • First verse, tall blond guy: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott's range extends from about midway through a normal bass range to a fairly high tenor, probably about 5 or 6 octaves. When the bass solos Scott can and does take over the bass harmony line. • Second verse, dark haired guy next to Scott: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves, but he's most comfortable in his higher registers. He switches between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice seamlessly, and is known for his ethereal high solos. Everyone in Pentatonix says he has the best voice of any of them. • Third verse, black guy in a white jacket on the far left: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. It's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a live stream of "Hallelujah" from their most recent world tour, though you may want to watch their official video of "Hallelujah" first so you can hear what it sounded like with their original bass, Avi Kaplan, who left Pentatonix in 2017 for personal reasons. You can find the recording with Matt here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKLTmZuGltWepcUsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, which is fantastic. His lowest notes don't blow out speakers the way Avi's have done (though they may within a year or two), but on the high end he's very close to the top of a normal tenor range. • Fourth verse, the only woman in Pentatonix: Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, alto and soprano. Kirstin sings anywhere from a low alto (though not contralto, which is the female equivalent of baritone) through coloratura soprano, the highest female range. And she has whistle notes on top of that which are off the charts. Lately Pentatonix has begun referring to her as an "alto soprano." • The fifth member of Pentatonix is the black guy on the right: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on the cello and once on the saxophone. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional beatboxer instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place. Matt joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it), after their original bass left the group for personal reasons in 2017. Which brings us to the one member of Pentatonix who doesn't appear in this video: • Bearded white guy who usually wore a beanie or stocking cap: Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo - his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances - but his range extends upward to about the middle of the tenor range. Since leaving Pentatonix Avi has gone on to have an extremely successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his KZbin channel, which you can find here: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic The appearance of Mitch and Kirstin tends to vary greatly from one video to another, so people will frequently think they see someone new in Pentatonix when it's really Kirstin or Mitch. With these two, go by their voices, not their appearance; their voices don't lie. To be clear: Avi is the ONLY member who's left Pentatonix and Matt is the ONLY member who joined later. Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin are childhood friends from Arlington, Texas, and in high school they formed a trio which they unimaginatively named "The Trio." They performed frequently at school functions and occasionally on local television. For this reason, pentaholics (Pentatonix fans) still refer to them as "the trio," and the trio is the heart of Pentatonix.
@blitzofchaosgaming67374 ай бұрын
Its also good to mention that Matt has now been in the group longer than Avi was. 7 and a half years after he joined, some of us have gotten tired of hearing people refer to him as "the new guy".
@margretrosenberg4204 ай бұрын
@@blitzofchaosgaming6737 Ah, I knew it had to be coming up soon but was uncertain about the exact dates. I'm one of the people who's tired of hearing him referred to as "the new guy." Matt is a fantastic singer, with a HUGE range; he is an equal member of Pentatonix and deserves all of the respect that goes with that. The problem is, sometimes, in context, "the new guy" is the only option. It's very annoying, but I haven't been able to think of a way to avoid it. Have you? If so, PLEASE share it. If just one person can come up with a better way to deal with "I haven't seen him before! Who is that?" we can all get behind it and maybe put an end to the implicit belittling of Matt.

As someone has already mentioned, Pentatonix got their start when they won season 3 of _The Sing-Off._ Home Free got their start when they won season 4 of _The Sing-Off._ I like Home Free; when I hear their rendition of "Ring of Fire" (featuring Avi Kaplan) I can't tell that it isn't Johnny Cash singing. But IMO, Pentatonix is the better group, for two reasons: 1. Pentatonix sings songs from just about every genre there is; Home Free tends to be more narrowly focused, on Country and Western songs. 2. Pentatonix has both male and female voices. Home Free has only male voices. (And lest you think that I mean that as some kind of criticism of men, I think that another a cappella band, Citizen Queen, suffers from having only female voices.) Pentatonix is the only a cappella band to have ever won a Grammy, except they've actually won THREE Grammys, and been nominated for two more. They're also the only a cappella band to have a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Never seen a 'mildly good' ptx video. They are all phenomenally talented and it's reflected in each video and every live performance. I will admit that music is an art and therefore highly subjective. Don't forget Hallelujah, Daft Punk, Bohemian Rhapsody. These are the trifecta each reactor usually starts with. If you want to see how they started, watch Season 3 of the Sing-off. Please also react to Amazing Grace, The Prayer n Kiss from a rose. Ptx does own Christmas, tho. So you might want to react to some Christmas music, at the appropriate time.

Definitely not Matt's first video, not sure where people got that. Maybe it was the first video after he became an official member... he was a "featured artist" from September 2017-February 2018 (when they renewed their contract with RCA). But he did a LOT with them during the Christmas season before this.

If you listen to the Daft Punk official video, it’s easy to think that a lot of work was done in editing. Take a few minutes and listen to a “private performance “ version of it as well. It’s just the five of them standing in a room being recorded by someone with a cell phone camera and it is amazing how much they shine with such poor recording facilities.
