If you’ve actually heard them sing it in person, then you can’t objectively say that this version is truly live. I’m not saying their actual live performances aren’t great, but they wouldn’t sing this on TV for the first time live.
@haselmaus8054 Жыл бұрын
Yes, Pentatonix uses a click track - at least when they sing live. But I don't see why this would be so bad. This is a group of 5 singers (or 4 singers and a beatboxer), but they are all singers. And no matter if you have 5 or 50 singers, when they just sing it's a choir. Normally a choir has a conductor to help them being synchronous with eachother. They don't have a person standing in front of them, they just have a "mechanic conductor" in their earpiece .... were is the difference??? And why is it a bad thing???

We Pentholics tend to get unreasonable about this. Of Course the NBC special was remastered. Kevin is already manipulating a microphone and while he used a stomp box on some original recordings, touring with it was wearing out his knee. Yes, there is production on Pentatonixstudio work and yes there's a sound guy. The private, mike free version of Daft Punk Medley IS impressive but so is the official video. That one was recorded in a closet and produced in the kitchen.
@stacyl7783 Жыл бұрын
Just an FYI , the first video has their original bass, Avi, where this one has MAtt, the one who replaced him. Avi was great at using overtones ( which to me sounds like reverb at times). To me, these performances are not comparable. And as far as their timing, please see PTX do their private performance of Daft Punk. No mics, nothing. Their vocals and harmonies are so tight.

Like I said last time, there are interviews with PTX arranger/producer Ben Bram and sound engineer Ed Boyer on Jacob Restituto’s YT channel if you want the lowdown on their recording and performing techniques. And their mini-doc Recording Evergreen may answer some of your questions as well. Tell me if I’m wrong, but isn’t an in-ear click track just basic concert equipment? Peace …
@neetgupta1 Жыл бұрын
I've heard them live. They absolutely sound exactly like this. It is a PTX thing - they do not record anything that they can't sing live. Kevin is probably the best beatboxer in the world. What he can do is unbelievable. I promise you they NEVER use any kind of autotune, apart from on their 90s dance music medley when they do 'I believe' just to replicate the style.
@jcs10257 ай бұрын
No they don’t. I’ve heard them live too, and there are literally hundreds of live concerts videos out there of them singing this live. They are not the same. Why would they take the chance of seeing this on TV for the first time live?

I have sung a lot on big stages in a large chorus, and without a director it is nearly impossible to stay in time with the people on the other side of the stage unless you are watching their lips move instead of looking at the audience, even if you are using monitors. So it seems to me that Pentatonix must be using at least a click track in their earpieces to help them stay together.

I think people are just not understanding your explanations. There's always sound adjustments in music. Unless you're totally off mic, of course, and the base and beatboxing always suffers in volume while off mic, especially with powerful lead vocals like PTX has. 🤷🏻♀️ The only thing I might argue with was your statement on Kevin's beatboxing and that's only because he's the only member of PTX who has perfect pitch. The others generally tune themselves to him. His nickname is not just "K. O." It's also "The Human 808." 😅 However, his stomping in the performance was probably pre-recorded because doing it live constantly was killing his knee, poor guy. You might also want to check out the videos they did in the beginning of the time after their record label dropped them. The ones where they're all together and only have a single mic in front, usually sitting on a couch or Avi and Kevin sitting in chairs closest to the mic and the others standing behind them. Those are a pretty good way to hear them clearly without production because they were doing everything on their own back then. 😅👍🏼

I did tell you they used Melodyne. Their Mixer Ed Boyer has said so in interviews. And they do use those in-ear monitors which likely give them not only beats but starting chord/note. If you watch live shows, you can occasionally see one or two of them adjusting the "package" on their clothing or in their ear. They very recently did four songs for Thanksgiving concert and Kirstie's package was malfunctioning so the sound guy had to grab her another one and run up to the stage and give it to her. She held it in her hand the whole set. Linky to said concert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKizp4ejismcbdUsi=JQJyGv-rHeqdWgtf

Declaring PTX is talented while concentrating almost entirely on finding ways to discredit their talent or credit it to auto-tune in the last video and amplification and timing in this one, is so strange to me especially coming from a professional -- Of course Kevin's beatboxing is amplified - of course - Of course there is timing in their ears -- No doubt -- as with ALL other performers -- So start with the that point-that all performers use amplification-- then tell us what you think --please - thanks

They give very open recording sessions, you can see behind the scenes and will realize they show you the mixing going on, what their producer does, etc, hopefully you won't be so closed up on "I am a musician, I know." We got it you are a musician, but wanting to always prove a point isn't the way either, I am the first one to call out "no live" acts. Of course when we say live, doesn't mean they don't have a click track, that is for guidance, it doesn't modify their vocals. They are open about using Melodyne, these are basic things probably 98% of music has, but you should see their "Daft Punk" live in a room with some vip guests, literally not even mic, it is just them in a small room. I really appreciated your channel, but for some reason these last reactions to Pentatonix seemed a bit cynical. I don't know why you are so concentrated on picking up on things to debunk if it's live instead of enjoying the music. But that is just me. Anyways I'll stay subscribed for now, I like your insight, I would like it not be a technical thing every reaction, and have a little more of soul, but we will see how it goes, it is your channel after all and you dictate how it goes, when it starts not suiting me anymore, I will be on my way. Bye bye and see you on the next upload!

The basses that you admired on this performance were Matt Sallee and when he does his solo, Scott Hoying (usually the baritone and tenor). Both Matt and Scott displaying their ridiculous range. The beat boxer, Kevin Olusola, uses a stomp pad, but apparently has recorded it to save wear on his leg.

Of course they have a click track, and probably there's a starting note on it. So? How else could they sing together properly in all the noise of a concert setting? You're talking about the mechanics of giving a concert. They also use microphones; I would bet that their earpieces give them the sound of their own voices as they sing; and there are teleprompters all over the stage for Scott to look at -if- when he forgets the lyrics.

the only augmentation on the beatboxing is the amplification from the microphone. Kevin Olusola is a human 808. you should check out any of their "Evolution of" videos. They are all filmed in one take no cuts all members visible for you to see live. They most likely have a metronome, which is totally normal if they do, They definitely have some verb/delays used in certain places to make up for sound quality of stadiums etc. but, you need to listen to some of their videos with the group gathered around a mic singing. You can check out their video of the production of their album Evergreen. They show the absolute perfection of their studio, and their process. Pentaholix, almost without exception listen with trained ears. It’s part of what makes us Pentaholix. We know that they use some of the usual tools in post, but they don’t use auto tune except on the 90s Dance Medley and a short segment on Daft Punk. The only reason they use it there is to stay true to the original. They don’t use it live at all, but they use their voices to get pretty darn close. The Hollywood Bowl is an open air venue, and you know that it’s much different than playing in a controlled environment like a sound stage. There’s not much you can really do to improve the sound of a band once you get into a huge venue, unless you’re willing to lip sync. PTX does not lip sync ever, they will play a clap track for a few songs but that’s about it. Kevin got injured using his foot pad, and they opted for the clap/kick track. Have fun looking, I’ll come along for the ride, as long as you’re respectful.

Your not the first to accuse them of pulling a Milli Vinalli, all those were proven wrong also, just like you will. It's easy to understand how someone has trouble believing they are just that good, so they have to question their abilities. But I have found they are just that damn good. Actually Daft Punk was recorded on an iPad, and I will explain why. I'm sure others will hit on this, but anyway. They won the Sing-Off prizes were $200K and a recording contract They had lost their recording contract because the company didn't think accepella was worth doing (they did come back a few years later and re-signed them. Anyway, being broke and just getting started, they spent their last $400, and made a deal with a brand-new post/editing company, (The company would do this one free, and PTX would use them exclusively for so long, and would list them as the Post company as much as possible Free advertising) then they went to Avi and Kevin's apartment, each one went in a closet by themselves, and recorded their vocals, Then they hung blackout curtains in either the kitchen or a bedroom I've heard both from reliable sources, and recorded the visuals, and then did post on Avi's iPad, which is what they recorded everything on. Put it on YT and won a Grammy. There is some debate over exactly what it cost, and where it happened, etc... I may not be right on everything, so if you hear something better go with it, this is just what I"ve heard, as I said reliable sources, people that were either there, or personally know the members. There is a list of the song, and if you have problem believing what you hear, a live version, and even a verson recorded as part of the Make A Wish Foundation, the do the song with no mics at all. If you don’t know Daft Punk you may first want to listen to 15-20 seconds of 2 or 3 of their songs to understand what is going on. There is one more link, it is an original song that is similar, and a live no mic version. I loved your reaction and I would really like you to react to the Brazilian singer Gabriel Henrique, singing the song “Earth Song” by #MichaelJackson. Furthermore, I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that on 12/08 at 6pm Brasília time, your new clip will be released. I hope to see your reaction too!!!❤️❤️❤️

Kevin's beat boxing is all Kevin. I have seen them in Concert twice they sound exactly the same

Just my engineer’s 2 cents - this, to me, sounds like live singing (it’s far from being as ‘perfect’ as their studio stuff, if you consider it to be that), which I think is a good thing, the snare beatbox hits maybe be automated to have reverb (or a layered sample) while the kick doesn’t, which would definitely require a click track but I don’t really have any issues with that at all; as you say, in this setting it would be exceptionally difficult to keep decent enough time as an a Capella group. It’s perfectly normal to have in-ear monitors and reverb, compression or other effects used by any act in any genre so that’s a non-issue really. The only gripe I have is that it doesn’t give me one tenth of the feel or emotion that Jeff Buckley’s cover or even Leonard Cohen’s original did. Just feels like the vocal equivalent of Polyphia - I feel impressed and that’s about it. Sorry 🤷♂️

Huge Pentatonix fan but yes on the Christmas special one I wouldn't say there was auto-tune but there definitely was some reverb or ssomething added to Kevin's (beatboxer) sound. I've seen them live in concert and we do have to hand it to there sound team b/c when they 1st got on the scene the audio engineers could not level them out so that it sounded blended and there would be times Scott (blonde) was way louder than the rest which lost the melody in the music w/o Mitch and Kirstin but they've been doing this for a long time and it's down to perfection. They are so talented, their whole team.

Pentatonix fans need to honestly chill tf out and get off of a high horse (I’m a ptx fan… AND an a cappella music sound engineer so I work with this stuff on the daily). Of COURSE they tune their vocals! When your one and only instrument to make music with your band is your voice, it goes without question that you’re going to tune and process your vocals to make it as great as possible. I know a member personally and we’ve talked about this. They tune. Ed Boyer, their studio Mix Engineer has mentioned it. Ben Bram, they’re arranger/producer has mentioned this. Anything they’ve done on TV other than their earlier days has been pre-recorded if it airs live or tuned live version if it airs later down the road. Manual tuning makes it so that it sounds natural and not noticeable (main reason why people insist it isn’t tuned). A dead giveaway that it’s pre-recorded or sampled is Kevin’s crashes. They hold over his continuing kick or snare, like a real drum kit. You physically cannot hold crashes over other sounds. I’m a beatboxer as well. It’s just not possible. None of this is meant to “degrade” them as singers/performers. They’re incredibly talented, there’s no denying. They just use the same tools every single other artist does and there just comes a point where you need to accept that. Just because they’re a vocal group and everything you hear (controversial with a lot of their recent music) is their voice doesn’t mean they don’t use modern technique.

Exactly. "They just use the same tools that every single artists does". We do accept that. We aren't on a high horse and we aren't stupid. And, when those other artists do a live concert and call it a live concert (by music industry standard), it usually isn't picked apart with the underlying implication that they are some how trying to trick their fans. That is what rockstardad is doing and that is what we are objecting to. We have also taken the time to listen to the multitude of performances (often spontaneous) sometimes recorded with just a cell phone mic with none of these tools involved. For this reactor to suggest that they can't possibly do what they do without those tools is a display of arrogance and envy. Additionally, the proof he demanded was provided to him in the commet secton of his first reaction. He chose to ignore it. He even acted like all the comments were just background info about the members training and went on in this reaction about how that wasn't proof. All the while, he blatantly ignored the numerous performance suggestions that are the proof he claimed he needed. He kept focusing on how PTX was using these various tools that as you yourself say "every single other artists does" in a live performance, while failing to emphasize that the use of these tools is industry standard for "every single artist" and that using these tools doesn't negate a live performance. Because he can't be bothered to check out the proof that WAS provided (because it doesn't support HIS narrative) he remains willfully ignorant of how minimal the use of these tools is actually needed in a PTX live performance. His approach to this reaction purposely implies that PTX is being dishonest in some way. This reactor is being disingenuous, imo. PTX is and always have been completely transparent about their music and their process. This transparency includes their new music which is evolving into new and exciting sounds, not always pure acapella. They have said their roots will always be acapella, but they want to grow and evolve musically as well. What true artist doesn't? This evolution of their music isn't duplicitous or "controversial" as you suggest. PTX is an open book. They are some of the hardest working, honest, humble and talented artists you will ever find. Doing a reaction that implies they are trying to trick their fans and aren't really performing live when they absolutely are by every music industry standard is just wrong. This is why PTX fans are showing up to object. We aren't on a high horse. Rockstardad needs to stop being passively aggressive with his misleading commentary. He needs to do better.

You should go to the back of the back of the class until you can hear some very basic understanding of Pentatonix.

Remember this is another bass. Avi left amicable. He left amicable. Scott the first singer changed the beginning to show they are not lip singing

It's just not the same without Avi. Matt is great. With the songs he's done with Ptx and Avi had no part in, he truly shines. But it's hard to replace Avi in songs Avi did with the group first. But they're all phenomenal talents and I listen to their music so much, both with Avi and Matt=)

PTX has been singing together for TWELVE years! They intuitively harmonize-particularly the Trio. Mitch, Scott and Kirstie have known each since they were 8! There wasn’t orchestra at the Bowl, so comparing Kevin from there to the special is not valid! 😊
