We all talk about the "Mitch-slap" but there's another recurring face, and that's the "Avi-face" when that first deep bass drop hits. Every reactor who wears headphones does a double-take, and then gets really confused when Avi does his solo and Scott takes over the bass for a verse. Love it. (It's why everyone shouts at reactors who don't wear headphones.)

So true about Mitch. I always love when this video is someone's first experience with Pentatonix. Scott is first of course and they say how good he is. Next is Avi and they don't always realize at first that he is the bass sound they are hearing. I love the look on their face when they do. They are very surprised when they see Kevin beat boxing. Then Kirstin sings and they usually mention how lovely and high her voice is and all you can do is smile and wait for their reaction to Mitch. I'm not sure how many Pentaholics watch Doctor Who but this reminds me of how each new person who goes into the TARDIS for the first time says, "it's bigger on the inside!"

Despite the title, this song is not religious at all, thus the confusing lyrics. Songwriter Leonard Cohen was a Jewish-born atheist who wrote this song in 1984 using intentionally mixed Biblical references and metaphors to tell a story of lust, sex, adultery, lost love, loneliness & heartbreak. In the years since, more than 80 additional verses have been written for the song, including some by Mr. Cohen himself and some by other songwriters. Some of these new verses NOT written by Cohen include more Christian themes and some include Christmas themes. Pentatonix wanted to record this song for their 2016 Christmas album using some of the Christmas lyrics, but when they contacted the publishers to get the clearance to use the song, they were told that at the time Cohen was only allowing artists to cover the song using Cohen's original lyrics. They wanted the song badly, so they agreed...and still placed it on their Christmas album anyway.

The lyrics, “ you saw her bathing on the roof” I believe is referring to the biblical story of David watching Bathseba bath on a roof and she was so beautiful, he caused her husband’s death to have her. I think the lyrics , “ tied him to a kitchen chair, she broke your throne and she cut your hair” is also referring to a biblical story of Samson having his strength taken away after Delilah cut his hair….which held his incredible strength.
