They seem to have moved to a two stages signal amplifier, sacrificing a bit of dynamic range to gain a little of signal to noise ratio. It's what is usually done to really fast cameras, like nikon 5d and canon 1d, that usually have great image quality at high iso, but lower dynamic range (sometimes worse than apsc). Pentax didn't go that extreme, so there's only a slight difference.

K-1ii is a very good camera. Almost as good as K-1.

Over saturation sell. Check what other do or have done to sell their "colour science". I find each K1 shots to have more detail in the fabric and other parts of the picture. Is it focus or an effect of mkii noise removal addition ? For the colour I would be curious to see the yellow chair in real life and compare. By judging other colours including your paint I wouldn't be surprised the K1 is closer to the real yellow. I'm not sure I will send my K1 for upgrade. For 700$ can, I don't see the benefit.

What I understand is that you can actually fix on the K-1 those slightly unsaturated colors easily by just increasing the saturation one click and that's it. But I guess it's much more difficult to fix the issue of the high dynamic range on the K-1 Mark II. Besides, I've read in couple of expert reviews that the better ISO performance on the K-1 Mark II comes at the cost of loosing some sharpness, even at base (100) ISO, which for me is a deal breaker. About the AWB, I have to say that on my K-1 (Mark I) I find that it always tends to a cool tone/hue, especially compared to, let's say, Nikon and Canon, which are more neutral or even slightly warm. Does anyone know how to fix this issue with the cool tone/hue of K-1's AWB without modifying manually the color temperature on each shot?

I preffer the colors from K1 mark 1,the difference is small...but k1 seems have a touch more warmer colors.The yellow chair on K1 i like alot more.

I paused the video when on 1600 iso and i noticed that there's more blurness as a result of noise on K-1 mark II image. Just look carefully on the arms of the grey chair where the shadows are and you'll see that these areas are more blurry than they are on K-1 mark I image. So yes K-1 mark II produces more noise unfortunately. Also the purplish thing on underexposed images is not something that can be easily fixed in post processing without loses on image quality tho the vibrance on the other hand can be easily fixed with photoshop's camera raw or lightroom. Im really happy you made this video and thank you for that.

Vormulac1 That seems to be the trend from this test. I felt I was more into the WB, DR and Noise. I think in my head I was thinking the detail should be all the same. Looking at his test with everyone, I think the k1 maybe more detail than the MK ii which is freaky to see. Cheers mate

looks more like the focus has shifted or a different aperture was used. The difference can't be that huge simply because of a few tweaks to the sensor.

Ail'enduril I feel aside from the details, what I look for is mainly Dynamic Range.Others may feel the same with WB or Noise level. At this level, we are pulling hairs but the purple shadow is bad.

I didn't care about the detail difference. You never mentioned it in the video. But it's most likely from different focus, not a sensor fault. Besides, judging these things from a youtube video is quite impossible unless I have my own set of comparison pictures. The purple shadows look crap on the Mk II. Good you pointed that out. Really makes one wonder what they are doing over Pentax/Ricoh.

Most likely why you get more purple when under exposing and bringing it up has more to do with the same reason of all the photos being more punchy and brighter colors on the mark 2 so the purple is more punchy also!

But when you adjust the saturation and vibrancy on the K1, it doesnt goes purple after raising the exposure. Essentially something is up with the processing on the Mk2.

For me the mark 2 colors are too saturated. I prefer the mark 1 in my workflow i use to get more contrast and reduce the saturation. If the mark 2 has this kind of saturation i need to reduce it even more

I can't find the sense of the test: they're mounting the same sensor, yes, I know that the image processor is different, but the only notable difference is the ability to maintain higher ISO.

Well as you said, difference in processor which plays a big role in the IQ just as lens and sensor. In some instances, a camera may over process the information it collects from the sensor, introducing noise or over processes thereby losing detail. I believe the mark 2 has less detail in the RAW due to baked noise reduction expect at base ISO. Cameras of today even DSLR are like mini computers, there's a lot to the whole process not just the sensor. Even the wiring due to signal noise, effect the IQ

Since we speak for the same sensor I think is more than algorithms issues ! Anyway I would get better dynamic range than we ! But I would also like the better detail 2 . If anyone knows pentax the upgrades is like on k3 , k5 (minor) is not canon here to make a new model and add same name with a mark ii .

Yea, they change something in their algorithms. Probably when they updated the AF, they tweeked more than they thought or something. My other test were getting all purple like crazy.

Dynamics rage problem (purpurish shadows) could be problem of raw outdated codec, as pentax is not so popular camera brand correct raw read in software constantly lags behind for weeks or even month. I suggest to repeat this test after next LR update.

if posible, try on Capture One. I remember I had problem for years with K5 dynamic range, if pushed shadows became reddish brownish, in Apple Aperture, but one morning they updated Aperture and problem was gone.

Babar Asghar Just look at the data on the right. It will tell you the file info. It glitches cause Im adjusting 2 , 36 mp file at the same time on an old computer. There is a reason I didnt do any cuts in broll because ppl can see in real time on the adjusting.

I believe the focus point was a bit different on these images, perhaps with the K-1 mkii focusing on the flowers and the K-1 focusing on the middle of the table. Did you use single point AF to avoid this? Also, do you believe the noise reduction at high ISOs is as dramatic as it is made out to be? In reference to the purple shadows, is that perhaps from the white balance on the mkii having higher saturation? I believe if manual white balance or if you lowered the saturation to match the K-1, the purple wouldn't be as noticeable.

Hi, AF-S for static and single point on tripod. Aimed at one part of the plant. I kept all setting exactly the same since it is the same camera really. I went to adjust those setting in my side testing and yes, the purple was still there. Majority of the people leave it on AWB, unless they know for sure their environment. Something has really change on Pentax side. People also said wait for another update on LH but I feel it should just be working after 6 weeks of wait. Maybe some update down the road can solve this.

The K1 MKII was designed to bake their noise reduction in. You cant turn it off sadly so the dynamic range wont be as good as MkI. Im unsure why Pentax took this route but its not good ;\

Hello again mate! there's a problem either in your software or firmware (back then). I bought k1 ii 2 months ago, i see absolutely nothing that reminds puprple or red or blue or whatever stuff in my heavily underexposed images.

You will need a K1 Mki to test it. Pentax started to bake the shadows we found out which is why K3 mkiii is bad. Your unit is suited for your usage as you wont know the purple till you push it hard like I did. I also did a firmware update video and still no luck. Good luck.

Indeed i noticed some purple stuff in my underexposed images, but it is easily fixed with the color mixer in photoshop or in lightroom, just by dragging that purple slider to the left. Those Adobe fat asses got so lazy that they can't write another script so you don't have to drag that purple slider for each and every underexposed image. Mind you, it is not the case with each and every underexposed image. I noticed some images when they are zoomed out, you can clearly see some purple stuff in them, but when you start zooming in, starting from 65% to 100% zoom that purples stuff vanishes somehow. Definitely a sotware issue.

@@sovu9399 Its actually not a software issue. Its Pentax getting lazy . They baked their raw files now and you cant turn it off. Its been documented and confirmed. Only Mk I is the true dynamic range camera due to this. Theres plenty online that can disclose this info. When doing baking , its less processing on the image so you take the hit on iq but other parts of the system gets slightly better.

Pentax is always vague with the firmware changelogs, and I don't own the K-1 II so that's why I was asking. I'm pretty sure Pentaxians are scared to test it and find out that nothing has changed and the NR is still being applied to RAW files...

You are such a Pentax fan and I actually like your tests but if it's correct what you did the K1 is sharper than the successor with the same sensor! - and that's really shocking and I wonder why you don't mention that in the video altough you somehow admit it in your comments... the only rescue for Pentax would be if they send you a bad copy.

The Pentax K-1ii has a pre-processor in it that affects RAW photos--the K-1 does not. That in turn makes the colors more saturated...Personally, I prefer doing my work in the Lightroom and to me the K-1 is the better value.

Its DNG. The only thing they have to support is the pixel shift / photo stack which doesnt work. ...

Adobe only need an update to support the pixel shift and their photo stacking. Its DNG File for Pentax. This isnt a complex proprietary format like Nikon, Canon, and Sony. This is as RAW as it gets.

:P not really. When the K1 was launched it looked like a good workhorse, but with lackluster AF. Now they are overrun by Sony. While I considered buying the K1 a year ago, I don't consider buying the Mk II now. I think it's safer to switch to Sony. The next FF pentax is miles away and K3-iii is nowhere to be seen. Some speculate a late 2018 release. But I have my doubts it's gonna be a good camera for the money.

Yea , I kept my K1 MK1 after this test. Also fan boys tried to trick me thinking an update would fix the image quality. It turns out the K1 MKII was baking their noise in the image which is no good.
