Pentax Q - My Thoughts

The shutter sound is actually a real shutter. It's not a focal plane shutter like standard DSLR, but the 01 and 02 lenses are actually equipped with leaf shutter and real ND filter.

Tenth anniversary Pentax Q review - great idea, David. It's a really worthwhile thing to do, because even after a decade, there's still no smaller system camera. The Q10s are available for as little as a hundred bucks here in Japan, and it's a great way to learn interchangeable lens/full control photography, without breaking the bank, or your back. I own every camera and lens in the system, and have no plans to change or update anytime soon. Thanks for the upload!

To be honest, at the time of making this video I wasn't thinking about the ten years anniversary part, haha~~ :-) I really just wanted to make about video about the camera because I really love the system so much and they are so much for to use. I love the Q's! I got a Q-S1 and primarily use the 04 (supplemented by the 05 + 03), JPEG only. Since I'm more snapshot photographer, the simple functionality really clicked with me. Got mine back in 2017 to use while taking the subway around Los Angeles, and it has become my main camera.

I think you have done the best review of this camera. And it shows that you have had relations with the camera because you did not forget to mention anything. Some things I would like to highlight. You have experience with a lot of cameras and for those who are used to the average quality of a full frame, images from such small sensors like Pentax Q usually show limitations. You said it, it is a camera for taking photos in good light, and for my taste the noise is still quite noticeable, especially if you want to pushing shadows. Therefore, in my case I always end up applying some noise reduction, but very little so as not to lose detail or naturalness. And a huge advantage of this little girl is that no one takes you seriously and that's great because the people around you will be relaxed.

If you thinking of getting Q, just tip in more $ and get Q7 or Qs1. Since there is better camera line up for Q with same lenses, no need to buy downgrade older ones. Just my personal opinion who had all 4 generations.

Love my Qs-1. I have the champagne with the prime, the #2 and the #6 lenses. Had it for years now.

I just bought a Q10 with the 02 lens, I am delighted with the experience it is giving me. I have been a Pentax user for years, my current camera is the K5-II and for street, as you say in the video, it is too flashy. I was considering other cameras, I even bought a Nex3 that didn't convince me. However, this little dwarf has me in love, so much so that I have already ordered an 06 lens and I am after a 03. Nice video! I bought a Q as soon as it’s available here in the Netherlands, kit with the 01 and the 02 lens. Later I bought the fish-eye as well. It’s a kit I’ll never sell (altough I’ve many other cameras), the results from this tiny camera keeps suprising me every time

Fantastic sample shots David! I love the colour your brought out of these shots. I have on of these after watching Mattias Burling’s compelling review, and haven’t used it enough. I only have the prime 01 lens but am tempted to get the 06 Tele zoom, but the cost is more than the camera and 01 lens so I am still on the fence.

Thank you for the compliment and for watching, really means a lot. Yeah, the Pentax Q (even the original version) will still deliver really nice results even for today's standards. The camera also packs in a lot of professional features that are really fun to use and can get you really nice results as well. The 06 lens is nice and I've been wanting to get it as well... I found some really cheap offers in Japan but I haven't bought it yet because if it get stuck at customs, then I could pay the extra import tax which drives up the total cost to almost the local price here.. Otherwise, it is a really good telephoto lens with a constant f/2.8.. Thank you again very much for watching and for sharing your thoughts/experience. We need a Pentax Q in a full size professional DSLR/DSLM Body like the Panasonic GH5 with is tiny MFT sensor. The sensor of the Pentax Q and its flange focal distance has so much more potential for it to get abandoned!

You could put a viewfinder in the flash shoe for those daylight situations where you can't easily see the screen?

I could have but that would really defeat the purpose of having the nice form factor to carry around and not to mention that the viewfinder would be very flimsy on this camera. In my experience, having the viewfinder attached to the hotshoe is a great idea but during many shoots, I tend to take them off and forget them... So personally to me it would be more of a hassle than a benefit... That said, I of course can imagine that many users would feel differently since everyone will have their own ways of using cameras. I think if you don't mind trying something different but fun then this camera is a great option to go for. For the form factor with the ability to change lenses as well as shooting RAW images, you can really be creative with this camera. :-) So if it's still available and you would like to buy it, I think it's worth a try. :-) Otherwise, I thank you very much for watching, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

I have owned the Q for about 7 years and use it with the prime plus the two std zooms and fisheye. It's a great backup camera. In fact, it is such a great backup that on a recent rtip to the Greekmisland of Rhodes used it more than my main a Sony Nex7. It allows brings a grin, and the only time it was lacking was in low light inside the Grandmasters Palace. It takes amazing images with auch a small sensor. It litraly with these four lenses a few spare batteries fits inmone pocket on my walking trousers. I also have a Fuji X-T1 but only had manual lenses at the time of this trip, which I could use just as easily on the Q or nex7. The Q will never be sold. I might get the two toy lenses, but the wide zoom is very hard to get and is when you find one close to £400 these days. Great review. I think you sum up the Q functionality better than anyone eleemhas and the Australian youtuber Blunty sums up the giggle ometer. This camera maxs at every cluck it is honestly that much fun.

did you updated your firmware to the latest one. I saw many claiming the updated firmware improved the focusing speed of the camera.

The firmware is up to date actually and it did improve the focusing speed compared to the original firmware. That being said, it is still not that much faster. Don't get me wrong, even though it is in general slow but I think it is still fast enough for most general purpose use, even for most street photography situations. :-) Thank you for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

Great video! I just got a Q myself to carry with me everyday :) I am surprised that you mention the camera having a maximum shutter speed of 1/2000, if I disable leaf shutter priority my pentax Q can go up to 1/8000.

Hi, congrats on getting your new Pentax Q camera and also for watching. Regarding the SD card, it's called "eye fi sd card"... I think nowadays Toshiba is making it but because most cameras have wifi features the past years, it could be a little hard to find this card depending on the region of the world that you live in... I personally would go for the Pentax Q simply because I'd be able to change lenses, the RAW files on the Q are also easier but more robust to edit as well. Furthermore, I just feel that the Q is more fun camera to use. That being said, if you don't want to invest in lenses in the future and would like to have a better video quality out of the camera as well, the SX 530 HS is definitely a better choice. Furthermore, the SX 530 HS will also give you that super zoom that you cannot get with any of the Q's lenses, so that would also be another advantage on the long run. I guess now it is up to you to decide what is your priority in buying a camera, which features are more important to you on the long term. I am wanting to buy one to take for travel instead of my big DSLR. I haven’t yet because I feel like I could get a similar result with just my phone. Is it worth getting and are the images better than what I could take with an iPhone?

I think that it depends. Straight out of the camera, the iPhone X and above will produce images looking much better than this camera can due to the computational photography that recent smartphones are able to do that traditional cameras cannot. That being said, you do have the advantage of shooting raw with this camera thus manipulate it more than what the iphone images can deliver. Furthermore, you can change lenses with this camera and with a bigger sensor, it allows you to take pictures with more natural looking blurry backgrounds than the digital blur that the iphone applies to their images in most cases. But all in all it really depends on your priorities as well as how you like to shoot. If you like more of a point and shoot as well as having better looking images straight out of the camera, the iPhone is hard to beat. But if you like edit images as well as have more controls, I think that the Pentax Q will be a better choice. I hope that helped a bit. Thank you very much for watching, really means a lot! I think it’s actually one of the more popular methods that a lot of street photographers are experimenting for the past decades and I have to say that it’s kind of fun. Sure, the results won’t be consistent but you don’t do it for the consistency. Once you find the right mix, it’s just so fun and addicting. I personally only tried it on other Pentax Q cameras but haven’t yet tried it on mine but I would still recommend it because the look of especially vintage lenses can be very pleasing with the Q. :-) Hope you found that somewhat helpful. :-) thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

I think the Pentax Q-S1 might be a nice place to start, it is still reasonably on the budget side with improved image quality compare to the original Q. Furthermore, it's also a nice capable camera for the size as well as being able to record decent video (if you need it) as well. Hope that helps. I had another question. im not sure what the best settings are. also, i have a manual lens called rainbow h12mm 12:1.2 not sure what the mean use is for the lens?

Ohh, it's a lens that was original made for CCTV cameras. It will definitely if with the sensor size of the Pentax Q and it will give a nice bright aperture as well. That being said, the results really varies from copy/users to copy/users... So I cannot really give you an objective picture but I think if you experiment with it, especially in the city at night, you might make some really interesting results. :-)

If all you cared about is quality and functionality, how good "premium compact" cameras with 1inch (and larger) sensors have gotten - the Pentax Q no longer make sense. The sensor is tiny, the focal range (even with all of the lenses available) isn't really competitive against today's 1inch cameras (Rx100s, G5/7X, TZ200 etc. etc.). The length of the lens are also too long, which means that on portability they compete more closely with m4/3, APSC and even full frame compact cameras with fixed lenses. With all that said, the idea is still insanely cool and from a fun factor, nothing really comes close (aside from maybe the Samsung NX mini) .
