One of the special things about this camera is that it is one of the few M42 Pentax models that allow you to use the 8-element 50mm f1.4 Super Takumar without damaging the rear element IF it has the orange ‘R’ on the winder; however the R on this camera is black. Is it still able to be used with the 8-element lens?

That makes sense and also explains why it's the one Pentax M42 body I owned that could use the Kilfitt Makro-Kilar-D 40mm. Like the 8-element, that lens protrudes pretty far back and the mirror on this camera seems to behave more like the Germany M42 lenses in terms of either the size or motion angle.

Is that a Shueido repaint or something? Is it just really that brassed?

It's been "well-loved." Obviously someone really enjoyed using it.

My second camera was a Pentax Spotmatic II - I've had it for 53 years - still use it to this day - and no brassing!
