Theres good reason why art teachers don't want you to use them and thats as students tend to focus on the outline too much and it works best for out lines. Most teaching in art is training the eye to understand volumes so that visualisation can be done from any angle and help understand natural perspective and shape.

Art teachers are artists not posers. They share what will work best for beginners. Students tend to hear in absolutes in the beginning. Im not a teacher but ive never had a teacher who discouraged me from using various materials. I like graphite pencils as well and prefer the 2mm.

Hello i am buying a pentel graphgear 1000 but i dont know what size i should get, i am thinking 0.5 because everyone is buying that one what do you think between .3 .5 .7 .9? and can i use different company leads of the corresponding pencil size?

Depends on what you use them for. For manual drafting and blueprints, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 are all useful. The 0.3 is just too delicate and you can mimic the effect by angling the 0.7 or 0.9 with a harder graphite and writing with the acute edge. For drawing, all sizes can be useful. You can use graphite from other manufacturers, but Pentel makes high quality graphite in all hardness and size. Their high polymer HB has good break resistance and marks exceptionally well at lower diameter. The graphgear 1000 is expensive, so I would only get the 1000 for your most used size. The other cheaper variant (graphgear 500) has a similar mechanism but plastic body and doesn't retract. It's definitely worth getting the variety pack so you have each one for each application. The 4 pack of the 500 is the same price as a single 1000. I've gone through 3 of the 1000s in 5 years of drawing cabinet blueprints. It can break at the junction between the body and the grip, but can be glued back together if you don't mind losing the hardness indicator.

For a single size, I recommend the 0.7. The 0.5 can sometimes become too sharp during normal use, so paper weight, finish and user pressure become major factors. If you like a super fine point all the time, I recommend a rotator-type pencil, like the Kurotoga Pipe Slide which rotates the graphite on every contact to 'sharpen' the point. The drawback is that rotators have some innate backlash and runout, especially once graphite micro dust works its way in and wears down the gear train.

I use them for work, it doesn't change. You unscrew the grip and you can turn to select the graphite type that you're currently using so you don't forget what's in it. They're about $15 USD, definitely worth it.

I have all the Graph gears they don’t have different shades of Graphite in it you put whatever graphite in it then you set the dial so you don’t forget what you have in it because it’s kind of hard to tell B2 B3 between H toH3 you can’t tell them apart just by looking at them so to remember you set the dial whos the poser now ?
