Yoda didn’t just go and hide, and give up. I thought Yoda went to Dagoba because he had foreseen his role in training the one that could bring balance. Or at least he COULD have a role in it. In any event, he did have a pivotal role. Yoda also he to defend himself many times during his years on Dagoba. All in an effort to protect Anakin’s children, ensure someone could teach them, and undue the harm he had a significant hand in causing. All this revisionist Yoda and Mace bashing is getting weird. They were trained in certain ways, had character flaws (like all Jedi, Sith and sentient living beings do) and got duped by arguably the most powerful Sith Lord of all time. Sidious was also playing the long game, a very long game. He had no intention of ever ceasing to exist. That allowed him to make insanely minute moves towards power. Yoda was approaching his end, something I’m sure influenced his judgment, perhaps in some not so great ways. I’d better end my diatribe here, perhaps my judgment had also been clouded.

A interesting idea but it's a little bit dark for my taste but it's a good story. But without a powerful rival in the force it's to challenge the Sith it falls a little flat lacking genuine peril that creates good drama. Three alternative routes: 1. Yoda becomes disillusioned with the Sith early on, runs off and joins the Jedi. They are told of the Sith's continued existence and search, finding nothing. A few centuries pass and everything else goes as the movies. 2. Yoda remains as a third figure within the rule of two, separate by necessity due to his long lifespan and inherent high ceiling. Yoda, Palpatine, and Dooku are behind the scenes in the Clone Wars. 3. A blend of the other two. Yoda learns how to conceal his true nature better than virtually anyone, runs off and joins the Jedi. Despite his old age, he is accepted into the Order due to parroting exactly what the council wants to hear and the serenity they sense rolling off of him. A few centuries pass and Yoda recognizes the workings of the Grand Plan starting to come about on Naboo during the Trade Federation blockade. He does everything to make sure that the Jedi respond exactly how the Plan requires them to. Everything transpires more or less according to the movies, but when Yoda confronts Palpatine in Episode 3, he congratulates Palps and reveals himself. Whether or not they get along or still fight and what comes after would be narrator's choice.

I'd say that it'd be physically terrible for the Jedi if Yoda was say Darth Goblin instead of Grandmaster Yoda, but the fact is Darth Sidious was a far more powerful Sith Lord than Yoda and he was an expert strategist who practiced patience to the point of seemingly inactive. The fact is It'd suck more for the Jedi if Yoda wasn't around because then they'd lose Yodas wisdom, counsel, and guidance as well as his physical, spiritual, and mental strength. All of these attributes would weaken the Jedi immeasurably if Yoda were not there to lead.
