Pentium 166 MMX & 3DFX Voodoo1 Gaming Test

In 1997 I bought my first computer, it was a Pentium 166, 16mb of EDO ram, a 1.6GB HDD, onboard sound, and video. I added a 3dfx Monster 3D Voodoo 1 a short time later, I owned POD, and NFS2se was my favourite race game. In 2024 I have a retro Windows 98 PC running a K6-2/475mhz, a Geforce2 MX400 32mb paired with a 3dfx Monster 3D Voodoo 1, and it has a Sound Blaster Audigy for sound, 384mb of Kingston ram, and a 32GB CF card for storage. Some things never change, and some get better with new technology. I have 42 games for this machine, all unique, and really special to me. I did go with a 24" widescreen monitor though, 75mhz refresh rate, incorporating an IPS panel for superior colour, 1ms refresh rate, and the games look amazing!

A very nice 1997 retro PC. Quake 2 and Unreal would run I guess a little better in 512x384.

Hi, thanks for the contribution. I put Unreal and Quake2 in 640X480 on purpose because as I often say in videos in the 90's it wasn't impossible that a hardware hungry game from 1998 as Unreal ran with compromises with a top build from 1996 for example 😅. Too bad we can only exchange views through the translator (unfortunately my English is bad) it's always very interesting👍

Voodoo 1 top!!! La Vera 3dfx, una scheda in grado di far girare giochi di generazioni successive in modo più che decente , quando le schede delle sua era non erano in grado di far girare nemmeno i primi.giochi 3D usciti in commercio! Forse l'unica altra scheda competitiva delle prime schede 3D era proprio la Matrox Mystique almeno per quanto riguarda gli FPS come effetti era carente sembrava di vedere un software render solo più veloce 😢

@@psi3845 parole sante😉, devo recuperare Mechwarrior 2, mi dicono che oltre la patch per 3dfx ne aveva una per essere giocato ottimizzato pure per la Matrox Mystique, sarebbe interessante fare un confronto 😅

@@efpcvintageplanet3406 assolutamente!!! confermo c'è una versione di mechwarrior2 per matrox Mystique forse c'è l'ho nella Mystique Boxata, c'erano vari giochi per la Mystique e giravano anche più che bene, peccato non avesse nemmeno il bilinear filtering. ☹️

I have an AMD K6 box that I got from a coworker, and I put my original Voodoo2 in there… I’m glad I kept it all these years, it’s almost like I subconsciously knew that retro gaming would be a thing someday. 😮😊

I remember back in 1998 finally building my own PC. My graphics setup then STB Velocity for the 2D and a Voodoo 2 12mb for the 3D. I remember running Quake 2 in OpenGL for the first time and in that corridor on the first map, firing a rocket down the hallway and just watching the light move with the rocket. THAT was awesome! The best of times.

Thanks for the comment. I'm happy when my simple videos bring people back to that beautiful time. I have kept this and other computers in an old room where in my free time I like to go back in time. I have a Voodoo1 on a PC with Pentium 133 and it defends itself well. I love socket 7s🤩

@@i.a.1475 Today someone decided that 3dfx are rare. It's not true, there are many around and they can be found with patience and word of mouth without going to eBay to spend too much money😉. With a 2 MB card an S3 Trio 64 I created a PC with Pentium 100 CPU with MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11. Or Windows 95 by changing Hard Disk. It's great with MS-DOS titles which I particularly love 👍

у меня в жизни первый компьютер был первый пентиум 200 ММХ 16 SIMM оперативы и 2 мегабайта видяха)) в 2003 году я его наконец то смог прокачать -3Dfx vodoo 2 на 12 мегабайт и оперативу dimm 32 мега добавил и еще 15 SIMM а что бы оператива с димм планкой заработала - пришлось обновлять биос с дискеты - вот целое приключение было )) до сих пор комп хранится в шкафу - и да я этого динозавра пародический протираю иногда даже запускаю и играю в 3 героев ))) xD ))) . У меня рука не поднимется чтобы такой компудахтер выкинуть ну или продать. Такая же история с мои компом который я лично купил на свои честно заработанные деньги - это был вечный 775 сокет - то же вот стоит и да я его прокачал и сделал про красоте - дабы на авито легко купить комплектующие вполне за небольшую цену. Но первый пентиум это реально целая ушедшая эпоха

1997. What days those were. 14 years old me, a decent machine under the table and the gaming industry just took another shot at the moon with Tomb Raider 1 and Duke3d, while Quake2 , Half-Life and Unreal were just around the corner. Id software ruled back then and between major releases you would play basically everything Apogee could throw at you. It was a blast.

Как жеж классно увидеть такой "ламповый" раритет. Прям как новый. У меня была Voodoo Banchee на 16 мб, по факту на 15 мб и я думал, что она именно по этой причине тормозит :). А вообще, компьютерная эра у меня началась с Pentium 100mhz и вроде что-то из s3. Помню несколько раз "напрягал" знакомого гика, у отца с работы, мне винду переустановить. А с той "легендарной" стабильностью, это требовалось очень часто. Когда у самого, впервые, "на ощупь", получилось - столько гордости было. А звуковые какие были. Почти аналоговые. Я сейчас слушаю и понимаю, что слышу характерную настройку тех звуковых, но или запись или система на SBXG6 не осилила передать, в полной звуковой сцене, всех оттенков звука от Sound Blaster- ра того времени, как он есть..

@@efpcvintageplanet3406 freddy fish, pajama sam, age of empires, lego island, humvee racing, ferrari soap box racing, that awesome trucker rest stop game, the original gta/gta 2 demo where the burger you ate had a bomb in it in the start, all those trippy math games and castle exploration games. the smell of your disc repair kit and plastic disk storage cubbies, it all had that one smell, cant beleive it hit me when i watched this, but i smelled it !! you are absolutely right. Normally with my Socket 7 I use cathode ray tube monitors for optimal performance and feedback in retrogaming. One of the few times I used the LCD monitor in 4:3 with a Pentium, KZbin decided to run that very video 😅
