The Pentium has come a long way, I remember when I got my first laptop, it had a Celeron 1000m with integrated Intel graphics from 2012, god how I wished for the Pentium my friend had back then, I was happy with 23 fps in ac blackflag at 800x600, had to mod bioshock and delete game files for assets and effects in battlefield 3 just to run those at 640x480, and yet, I was happy with that. Back then these type of framerates would have blown my mind.

My processor in my first custom built system was a Pentium, just Pentium, the original release. I did skip Pentium 2, got a 3 then a Pentium 4 3.2 Preshot space heater which ran 10 degrees cooler at 3.6 ghz with a multiplier overclock for some ungodly reason. Pentium have come along way, was the highest top end processor at one time until Core 2 supplanted it then the I series of core processors supplanted them. Quite a ways from top of the line to next to bottom of the barrel.

I find that a lot of tech youtubers seem to think people only game on PC to play the latest games at Ultra settings and/or at super high framerates. The main reason I mostly play on PC is to play the rich history of thousands of games, mods and fan/indie games only available on PC and 99% of those can easily run on this setup.

I really enjoy this channel. My current computer I bought used from my roommate just before the pandemic, an AMD Ryzen 5 1600X overclocked all core to 4GHz, 16GB DDR3 at 3200MHz and a Zotac GTX 1070 that clocks between 1911MHz and 2015MHz on the GPU core depending on temps. I have a used IPS monitor that runs at 80Hz and suits me fine with a resolution of 2560x1440 as my pimary, and an old Dell TFT monitor I got from a local AutoZone for free that runs 1280x1024 75Hz. I have never truly owned a new computer, just built PCs out of used parts because I don't really want to be, or need to be, on the cutting edge. I enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 at 1920x1080, with almost everything set to high with a few changes to medium, textures set to high, FSR 2.1 set to Quality and the FPS locked at 60 in the graphics driver....and the game with the most crazy things going on never drops below 50 according to MSI Afterburner. I very much enjoy how there is a PC community centered around older hardware and inexpensive builds. I will admit, I am looking forward to an upgrade to an EVGA RTX 2080 Super. If anyone is interested, please let me know if you would like me to post any performance differences I notice on my AMD Ryzen 5 1600X system between the two cards? I am more than willing to put together some actual, more scientific numbers to help out. Well, if that is ok?

I paired the 6500xt w/ the 12100f (which hovers around 100 to 110, so only roughly 20-30 USD more than the pentium but twice the cores and threads). I think for budget builds (outside of the used market), this combo is the sweet spot if you're bypassing the APUs and gaming at 1080p. As you said, there's a fair amount of games that need more than two cores to run acceptably, and the additional cores help keep the lows more steady in games that otherwise run ok (for far less stutters).

I can understand this the lowest of the low, but this looks like a colossal fail for the $ and you're being really kind to this combo, which is fair enough as I've never actually heard you ever rip anything to shreds and that's not a criticism - that's a good style to have. 6600 is only $50 more in my area, some places have it within $30 (but out of stock) so probably the same for most regions. That's not a lot for 50% more performance. I still wouldn't touch a 6500xt at this pricing. And why the G7400 over the Ryzen 5 3600? I mean it still is pretty easy to find new and the price difference is negligible? Especially when AMD boards tend to be cheaper. That's a lot more performance for not a lot more. I mean I'd rather go g7400+6600 and take the bottleneck while saving for a better CPU if I had to have intel. This way you only have to deal with one mediocre part to upgrade.
@Naddoddur
@Naddoddur Жыл бұрын
Yeah, not everyone lives in your area mate. In mine the 6600 costs almost twice as much and this chip is quite a bit cheaper than the 3600. A520 and H610 motherboard prices are quite similar here. Used to run a G4560 with a GT710 for a very long time, and that little CPU stayed good even as the system around it kept changing. I went from 4GB, to 8GB, to a 1660 Super, then dual channel 16GB, and I happily used it like that for almost two years before the *motherboard* gave up the ghost. Had to sell it off to help fund a new CPU+mobo combo as that was the more viable option but I still got almost what I paid for it. I texted the new owner recently and it's still running great in his 1080p gaming SFF HTPC. After watching this and comparing it to a PS4 or Xbox One, it's easy to see why the new consoles had to push RTX so hard. A cheap dual-core and budget GPU comes dangerously close in quality. When you are talking about dedicated gaming machines vs modern PC hardware, that's a bit funny. 10 years ago, this wasn't the case. I believe that the low 1& and 0.1% on witcher 3 could be a result of shader compilation stutter. Running your benchmark a few more times should let you cache all the shaders required in that area and you shouldnt see such low dips. Love the channel and this series of videos, its crazy what a great time you can have with "low end" hardware these days

The 6500xt has some pretty decent performance it’s just a shame AMD kneecapped it so much with a terrible memory bus and PCI bandwidth as you discussed. Had they given it even a 96bit bus and 8x PCI lanes it would have been a fantastic budget choice, but as it’s a laptop part that’s had the living snot clocked out of it the higher PCIE lanes wasn’t an option without majorly reworking the silicone which they weren’t prepared to spent the money on so a half baked product went to market and was rightfully slated.

Its how the core its self is make . The amd gpu have the same setup like hun cpu line Its use both the infinity bridge and on that the core and pci-e bus are connected. Faster gpu means a extra core connect on the bridge. That is the reason it beult up with 4x 8x and 16x pci-e slot. This is the reason the old Ryzen 2200g only have a 8x PCIe bridge for the external gpu . The igp is connect on the other 8x pci-e lane. Really a good thing amd have make but it have some smal problems on old pci-e 16x slot.

Having got my first computer, in my early teens, in late 1981, my idea of "playable" differs somewhat from most. An 8 bit CPU running at a few MHz and Kilobytes of RAM could make early "3D" games exciting even at 5fps! 😁 Today, if a game can hit 25fps consistently, I'm certainly not unhappy. 30fps consistently and I'm definitely happy. Anything above that is just a matter of bragging rights. 😉 I'd rather have a lower average, but very consistent frame rate than a high average with massive drops. When you're actually playing a game, so much detail just goes by unnoticed anyway.

I find most games that are still being made for the Xbox One and PS4 will run on most modern low end cpus at 1080p no problem when pared with a mid range GPU they tend to struggle at any resolution above that or on games that aim for more powerful hardware in general and that struggle on those two older base consoles.

Honestly despite the bad reception the RX6500XT got for lacking flex features its pretty much the entry point for modern gaming. I used the card for a few months back when it was the only GPU you could buy for 180 US$, I ended up giving it to a friend and to this day we play Rainbow 6, GTA 5, Elden Ring and GTFO together. Hes picky with frames since he bought a 980 back when he had a stable job and he never whined about the card.

Yeah, people truly overestimate the importance of core count over per-core performance, but Im still surprised a dual core can keep up regardless. So far I really thought quad cores were the lower end of whats servicable for typical games as thats been the default from the 2 Quads until Ryzen came out, and six cores is the sweetspot for a bit more future-proofing towards future games and sims that scale better with more cores. But I guess this goes to show that a lot of games still havent gotten to the point of scaling with that many cores (or threads) for their main CPU tasks, and really the main issue seems to be that loading in cant be done on its own core so it kind of stalls out the core that is supposed to do other heavy lifting, and I think thats happened with Apex Legends, and it normalized when the game ran out of things to load. Takes me back to the days of World of Tanks when that game defaulted to loading explosion effects from the drive only when the effect was needed, all to save on a bit of RAM and VRAM. The game did this regardless of settings and regardless of system specs, despite it clearly being an optimization that only benefits absolute potatoes. And the punchline was that this was before SSDs were common, and anyone with an HDD got seriously screwed over as the response time of the drive meant that the game would literally stutter in the moment it took to load the explosion effect. An effect thats usually needed in tense situations where the last thing you want is a stutter.

Had a E8400 and I bought the G7400 for a (iGPU only) project. I already thought of the RX 6400 as a nice GPU pairing xD 6:45 ... this is a common issue not exclusive to the G7400! Had it on a 1135G7 laptop BUT also with my R7 3700X... On a 240Hz monitor I'd lock Apex to 120FPS and stuff like Witcher 3 should run perfect with a 40FPS lock....

This wombo combo is actually on point, unfortunately probably the majority of gamers will go for AMD, AM4 provides 5 gens of cpu's on pretty much every board, cpu's like the R5 1600/R5 2600 currently go for about 45/50 euro where I live. Intel sucks because they change boards way too frequently and there is usually way less cpu's on the used market which are on the higher aspect of money...

I was deterred from getting this GPU recently after reading it had big problems on PCIe 3.0 systems and really inconsistent performance from game to game, as well as the lack of GPU encoding for recordings and such. I have a decently powerful CPU, R5 5600 (not x) and decided to just go for GTX 1650 OC instead. I'm wondering if I'm an idiot for doing that or if I avoided a disaster, or missed some really obvious choice that I could've went for instead
@williampaabreeves

the obvious choice is used if you can. in countries with used markets, nothing new below the 3060 ti makes any sense tbh. the gtx 970 or 980 can regularly be had in the UK between £80-£130, and they crush the 1650. its not like a PSU capable of running older GPUs is huge money, 500-600w PSUs are brand new around £40, able to run everything pre RTX 30 as long as the CPU isn't a juicy Intel 10th i9 gen or newer. i've found as good as 880w PSUs on ebay UK for under £20

4c/8t. More and more even that will be pushed to 100% moving to a line of newer games. I mean a Ryzen 5500 is $90 USD or was a couple weeks ago and that's 6c/12t and a B550 can be had for around $100 and that's a pretty solid gaming setup on the cheap. Just add any lower to mid range GPU and you're fine.

I'd be curious to see how much the games that really suffer, like Witcher 3 Next Gen, are compute limited by the 2C/4T design of the chip or if they're cache starved by the measly 6MB enabled on the Pentium. A follow up that'd be really interesting to me would be to take a higher end Alder Lake chip like a 12400, disable cores and underclock it to roughly match the G7400... but with triple (18MB) the L3 Cache.
