I too was there from June 56 to Dec 58 with the 511th and 984th Eng. Co's stationed in Kaiserslautern. We had numerous alerts and spent a lot of time helping the locals repair or demolish just about everything. The local Germans were very nice and even invited us to their homes to meet their families. It was a great experience that I will always remember.

8:30 - The US paid thru the nose for "maneuver Damage". The West German Army did whatever they wanted and didn't pay a cent. I remember in 1978 the Canadian 4th Brigade Group agreed to participate with 3rd Armored Division in REFORGER if we would pay their maneuver damages. We did...and they took off their track pads and did twice the damage they would have!!!! Ha!

In the event of a Soviet/Warsaw Pact _Blitzkrieg_ against West Germany in the 1950s or early '60s, NATO would have resorted to tactical nuclear weapons quite quickly. As NATO was greatly outnumbered and outgunned in conventional forces by the Soviets/Warsaw Pact, tactical nuclear weapons were ultimately the only effective ways and means of halting a Soviet advance to the Rhine.

"10 shells for every one that the communist enemy fire at us"... LOL. And now President Eisenhower's Massive Retaliation Doctrine and New Look Policy make more sense than ever... America was being outspent and suffocated economically in the Korean War. It almost was completely in the Vietnam War... What's funny though is that the practice of firing 10 shells for every one the enemy was firing is presented here like a winning strategy... :)))))))))))

The Pentomic reorganisation of the fighting arms of the U.S. Army was begun in 1957 and and abandoned in 1963. The Pentomic concept and its doctrine were inherently flawed when put into practice and abandoned after trying unsuccessfully to make the concept and doctrine work.
