In this video I show you the complete process of making a double barrel wood pen. I also develop some chipping on the edges of the tube so I will show you how to fix and deal with it.
I'm using Jr Gent II fountain pen components with a punky type burl wood.

Same Comment as G Edwards... I like that you used a dead center in the headstock and live center in the tailstock.... wish I would have thought of that!! No mandrel, no bushings... love it! Thank you for the video bud!! Nice Pen!

Wow! I've never seen a pen being made, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching. The bonus for me is that I have a JrGent pen and have been trying to find out the manufacturer. I received the pen as a gift about ten years ago, but don't have any paperwork on it. I am so glad to know what it is. It 's a beautiful pen and the nib is great.

+karodora Thanks! Yes, the process is definitely pretty cool. I came across pen making a few years ago and it hooked me! It's pretty hard to find out who made a certain pen as there are thousands of pen makers out there. But a Jr Gent is most definitely handcrafted by a small woodworker somewhere out there. The Jr Gents are also my favorite, great pens!

Sounds like your lathe has a bearing going out. If so you should replace soon as to not damage the lathe. Just wanted to let you know. I really like your fountain pen. The wood choice is terrific. Thanks for sharing your video.

You do nice work and these are beautiful pens and all but the 1 part of your process here I didn't understand is why you don't use bushings between centers?
@Coveywoodworksposts
@Coveywoodworksposts 9 жыл бұрын
+Mike Vogt A lot of turners who turn between centers (TBC) use bushings, but I find them to be more of a hassle. The main reason is that I have yet to find one bushings that is not slightly off. Which creates a pen barrel that is slightly elliptical and thus it doesn't create a perfect fit on my pen parts. Second without the bushings it allows me to create a cleaner edge on the wood, and also when I finish it with the CA, it gets in the crack of the bushing and wood and makes it a pain to remove the bushing. And it can also crack the finish. So all in all, from experience I have found that I get more accurate and better results when I turn without bushings.

I have had a few bushings off a little so that makes sense why you do that. I appreciate it keep up the good work

Very nice. I noticed that you were turning between centers instead of turning with a mandrel. I have been thinking about trying to give this method a try. Do you like the dead center better, or the mandrel? I have read that between centers is much more accurate, is this true? Thanks, Greg
@Coveywoodworksposts
@Coveywoodworksposts 8 жыл бұрын
+Gregory Edwards Yes, I personally prefer turning between centers. It definitely gives much more accuracy than a mandrel. Mainly because each side is stationary. With a mandrel the bar can at times flex or it can be slightly off center. Neither of these will happen when turning between centers. Some people will still use bushings when turning between centers. But there are way too many inaccurate bushings out there, so I just do without them.

Covey Woodworks Yep, I just turned a twist pen today and I noticed that the finished blanks were off just a bit on the mandrel, just enough that I could see it. I think I'm going to find me a dead center, do you know of a source? Thx Greg

@Coveywoodworksposts

+Lee Peterson I prefer turning between centers as it gives me more accuracy. Most other turners out there who turn high end pens also turn between centers, but you'll get a few people who prefer mandrels as well.

I have the same question. What is CA glue?
@nathanpham1432
@nathanpham1432 5 жыл бұрын
CA glue is a glue but it can be use as a sealer or gluing the brass to the wood is like super glue
@michaelrizzuto649
@michaelrizzuto649 3 жыл бұрын
CA glue has several functions, and varies depending on the viscosity of the glue you get. When applying a coat, it's best to use the thin, whereas I like using a medium when I'm gluing the brass tubing to the insides of the wood blanks.

There are several exotic wood sites online that sell woods. One is ExoticBlanks.com, I prefer them over anyone else. Also if you are on penturners.org, guys are always selling there over stock of woods, acrylics, and kits.

Nice job! A safety tip - don't use cloth on a lathe. If it gets caught it could cause an injury. Use paper towel.
@CJPhillips6648
@CJPhillips6648 8 жыл бұрын
you should clean & service your lathe, every 2 weeks, you should check the motor { on a maintained lathe you wouldn't have to spin the live center to start the motor}!!!

Hmm, I already have a workshop set up for making tobacco pipes, looks like all I need to get is that pushy thing to make my own pens too. It'll be good that I can use the spare briar wood that's currently being discarded from the blocks, and any excess acrylic too. Now, what's the name of the "pushy thing" that you use to put the caps on?

In my opinion if you are selling or doing this high level of pen why sell yourself short and have a chipped wood pen. Also a lot of time chips come from glue not being applied over the whole tube. Try putting more glue down the blank before putting in the tube

whats this magical substance CA and how much does a fountain pen set go for? not a complete one just the set
@Coveywoodworksposts
@Coveywoodworksposts 9 жыл бұрын
+Thisisausername Anditsveryoriginal CA stands for Cyanoacrylate. It's basically a raw form of super glue. When you apply several coats it creates a hard shell around the wood that is resilient from oils and other liquids. Because it creates a type of hard plastic it can be buffed and you get an amazing shine with it. As far as Fountain pen kits go, they vary a lot. It all depends on what type you get, the design, finish, etc. Most will be $20 to $30, but I have a few kits that cost $60. Selling these finished and assembled could be $125 to upwards of $300.

+Adam Bordelon Thanks for the concern! But I've done thousands of pens and I've never had even a close call. I've got a system down when I use it, so if it does happen to catch (which is rare), it will just slide out of my hand. Thanks though!

Nice job ! How much time you need to create that kind of pen, and how much you sell it?
@Coveywoodworksposts
@Coveywoodworksposts 9 жыл бұрын
+chien chat This particular pen would take me about 30 to 45 mins to turn the pen and about 15 mins to prepare the blank. That'll vary a little depending on how fast I'm working though. I would sell this pen for about $110. That will also vary slightly depending on the material used and whether or not it's a fountain or a rollerball pen. Stuart
