Pentwater / Manistee | Under the Radar! Michigan

I once lived in Manistee and fell in love with their historical society. Spent many hours rummaging through all of the old photographs and other historical artifacts related to their history. Another industry that really put Manistee on the map was logging and shipping which is now a bygone era. Manistee once led the world in the production of cedar shakes and was once one of the largest cities in Michigan. I hope to visit again one day. I've heard things have changed a lot. Oh and... when I did live there they were always boasting of having one more church than bar in Manistee County. My guess is they probably led many other towns in the production of parties and good times as well!

I believe Manistee has the oldest CONTINUALLY operating fire station in the Nation. Wonderful town.

I’ve spent a bit of time in both of these towns; once got pulled over by the local police in Pentwater, lol. Little known fact: James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader, began his acting career at the Ramsdell Theater in Manistee, having graduated from Brethren HS, just 15 miles away.
