Peony Oil Painting Tutorial - By Artist, Andrea Kirk | The Art Chik

I’ve really spoiled my viewers with this video! With almost three hours of detailed instruction, you will learn MANY of my secrets. My goal as your instructor is to make you feel comfortable doing challenging projects. My Peony painting is definitely worth the effort. You will first learn to draw and shade the flower and it’s petals, then mix your colors and apply to the background, leaves and petals. And finally, paint the pollen center. I’m the end, you’ll have a gorgeous masterpiece and the skills to master your next painting.

Did you use a graphite pencil or water colour pencil for your shading at the beginning?

I used a Prismacolor pencil. It’s a high-end colored pencil that works really well with canvas.

Do we really need these many colors.. can’t we use less to make more colors ie mixing green and red to make brown etc. that’s a lot of colors for this painting when you want to buy top quality paint.

That’s the beauty of realistic art. A lot of people think that you can get away with painting with one or two shades of each color. But to actually produce a realistic painting (realism), it actually requires several shades of each color. It’s the difference between a flat piece of art versus a rich, three dimensional masterpiece 💗.

I’ve been looking for an instructional video on painting a peony and this exceeds anything I’ve found in detail, instruction, and addressing the viewer as a student. You are extremely talented and experienced and the patience you have in going over every detail, explaining why you use a certain brush, or why you chose a certain color, blending, etc. is so appreciated. I’ve watched this video in sections multiple times but still am struggling with my own painting but know that each time I come back to this, I learn more and my understanding increases. It’s encouraged me to keep trying. Thank goodness oil paints are so forgiving and easily removable. Thank you so much!

Lovely painting thanks! can't find painter's plastic in the UK and I've been painting for a long time! Trying to buy it but can't source it. I stopped using palette knives to mix and I use silicone tipped colour shaper instead

Question: do you shade for the visual for painting so you don’t refer to the picture? Are the pencil marks hard to cover with paint

I shade to know where my highlights and shadows are, but still refer to the photo while painting. And if you use the pencils I suggest, they cover beautifully.
