I thought I was correcting my dog sternly enough. Even when I went to a trainer and they told me I needed to use my mom voice, I was like “I am!” because I really felt like I was. It wasn’t until I accidentally recorded myself yelling at her when she chased a cat that jumped into the yard that I realized my correction voice is the same as my regular voice. It sounds louder and more stern in my head but it isn’t. I highly recommend anyone who feels like their dog is blowing off their corrections to record themself.

Such an important part! Way too often I see a dog do a series of misbehaving followed by one small thing like sit, and the owner gives the dog a bunch of praise. Because they sat! Meanwhile, dog is like "okay, cool. this pattern of behavior is what we want" or "alright, I can just do whatever I want as long as suck-up at the end"

They have a 2.5 old male that is super friendly with everyone but pulls like crazy until he can’t breathe anymore. I told them: do you want me to make him stop pulling in just some mins? They said that’s never gonna happen, you can forget it. Within two hours he had made so much progress. He still pulls a little, but my friend was really impressed. I told him I learnt it from my favorite dog trainer on KZbin.

The dude was just too nice 😂 Firm hand is essential when handling a dog. No need to be cruel or mean, but firme and confident is a must.
@redwitch12
@redwitch12 Жыл бұрын
The confidence is the key part. When the dog picks up on your confidence, it's like they realize you've got the situation in hand and they don't have to be on edge, ready to protect their "pack" or themselves. Being firm then flows naturally out of the confidence--you know what you're doing, so you don't want the dog to be scared or aggressive in a situation you've got under control; you're not being mean, you're giving the dog some clear direction on what behavior is expected.

@@MrsGarks Some people just need the reassurance that their dog won't hate or fear them forever if they use a firmer tone of voice, give a leash correction, or physically grab the dog to reposition them. Getting that reassurance from someone who's had years of success and experience in working with dogs is probably all the guy needed to raise his confidence. :)

Yes! Thanks for posting this it's what I've been needing to see. We have a 2.5-year-old 80 lb rescued Goldendoodle that we've had for a year. Per the rescue, he was an owner surrendered and had been neglected kept chained up in the backyard or locked in the garage, had never been groomed, house trained, or taken for walks. Fast forward to this year that we've had him and he's much improved and his obedience has come a long way. However, he is leash reactive to people, cats, dogs, birds, etc, and he charges at most everything that moves and will nip at peoples’ clothing. Which isn't cool. He’s so cute and fluffy that he looks like a teddy bear. We've been out at places and people have come right up on us w/o permission and hugged him and gotten nipped. Then the people were upset and I was upset and then they were like - You need to control that dog! Get some training! Then I was like- We don't know you and you can't just come up on us and grab my dog. Of course, they weren't “grabbing” my dog they were simply “hugging” him because he's cute and they wanted to and besides I shouldn’t bring him out if I didn't want people petting him. Anyway, the things we're working on are the leash reactivity and the charging at everything. Other than that he’s a great dog.

Hands-off training is such an effective way for clients to learn. I have been doing it more and more, especially with the fearful or aggressive dogs. So glad you shared this! In the end, I always say it doesn't matter what the trainer can do with your dog, it's what the owner can implement themself to have the sustainable, long lasting changes they want! Of course doing a demo is always great for s visual for them to learn, but hands-off is where it should end up! A lot of trainers are show offs 😂 Joel, you cover all the basis. Also, I am trying to send the session of the bully you did with the teeth chattering in your office with dogs passing....I can't recall what it's called, any chance you can share in a reply? Very whiney, anxious, reactive, fixated, teeth would chatter just sitting and watching. Would just run up to greet dogs over, and over, and over, with no impulse control. Please help me figure out, I need to rewatch for my clients dog who's identical! Where is part2 for this bulldog?! Waiting!

😂 You are judging his everyday life day at home, with friends, or his out-and-about personality, versus his with training owners and their dogs? Do you think someone has the same persona while giving a lecture to thousands of people as they do at home? No, they do not. Do you believe that a CEO or top dog of a large company or where you work is the same as they are at home? Joel is never loud and is very respectful to everyone. It's no different with Joel, or anyone for that matter. Take a moment and think about it. 🤔

When the owner first had him and he told him gently to calm down, I burst out laughing more just from shock. It reminded me of a first year teacher who told me, a veteran teacher of some very tough districts, that you shouldn’t show your teeth until the second semester. All I could think was if you don’t show your teeth at the first sign a correction is needed, you might not have teeth to show later. I am not a perfect owner by any stretch but I do know that dogs don’t work like humans. We joke that our little guy has the brain the size of a walnut and can’t be expected to make good decisions all of the time so we have to remove his opportunity to make bad ones as much as possible but I think that would be something interesting to touch on. They look to us to gauge their decisions, reading our body language and tone for when we are nervous. Owners who try to treat their dogs by human standards rather than the correction another dog would offer may have more issues because it confuses the dog.

Yeah I think the dog was scared and unsure that's why he was barking and stuff at you... you see after he was just avoiding you (going under the chair)... great session

"All the kids in the family he's good with." They really let a people reactive dog interact with kids. I cannot 😭 and these people are in the documentaries about mauled kids saying "There were no signs. Completely unlike him."

That dog is smart. The owner just needs to be trained. The dog owner is very quick on it too. I really do think the owner needs to socialize the dog heavy. This is why I trust a homeless person's dog over house dogs, because they are among the people more. It's crazy to think about it but it's true.
