You know, I've gone to Comic-Con every year since 2000, and I have yet to see one incident of sexual harassment of cosplayers. I'm sure it happens, but its not very wide spread. One time Burger King was giving out "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob" crowns in order to promote NEW MOON, so I turned mine inside out and wrote "No TWILIGHT" on it, and wore it around the con. I got tons of love and hugs from Cosplayers. So they are cool in my book, and I hope no one gives them shit for coming dressed as what they love/hate/desire/ect..

I've read about an incident where a father went to a My Little Pony convention with his little daughter, and these bronies attacked them to the point where they had to leave because "they're not real bronies". With that being said the MLP Fandom is the most obnoxious one of them all.

PhillT1988 Yeah, it's not uncommon to find people like that in most fandoms. But the Brony Fandom is filled with parasitic assholes. Families can hardly bring their kids to anything involving MLP because of the Bronies. Little girls can't look up their favorite characters anymore because of all the sick crap Bronies pump out(Safe Search doesn't block everything). You commonly run into incredibly unintelligent Bronies, some of which you can hardly understand in their first language. I could go on forever but I don't want to make a wall text...

I am also a Star Trek fan....Sorry I wasn't born in the 50s-60s in order to have started watching it when the original series aired.I was born in '91.Does this make me inferior to all those fandom elitists out there? I feel like that's happening now with the return of Grunge music and what sudden popularity it has gotten now a days. I don't really subject myself to one genre of music. I've only heard a few songs that could be classified as Grunge. Apparently where I live, if your not into what's "hip and "cool" these days, you're an outcast and they won't accept you. And listen, I don't care if you like something but don't know that much about it. THAT'S FINE! Just make sure you at least know you have an idea and be PROUD of it! You don't HAVE to be dedicated. Trust me, I'm not really "in" to anything that everyone else is doing. Don't do it just because it's "trendy", get introduced and see if you like it or not. And if you don't, it's okay. If you do, you don't have to be the ULTIMATE FANBOY and know EVERYTHING ABOUT IT, just have a good understanding and be inspired. I am quite finished!

I agree with AOS for the most part, but I can also see where some of the haters are coming from. A problem I've seen is where cosplayers (typically women) complain about guys staring at them and calling it creepy. Not even legit concerns like dudes touching them, their costume or props, but just looking at them. If you're a fairly attractive woman dressed as Mileena or Yoko or someone from Queen's Blade, people are going to stare. But I will agree that touching and taking pictures without permission is *not okay*.

In the Philippines, we call wanna be cosplayers as jejemon cosplayers because it's now becoming the norm and our local media somehow diminishes some of the essence of cosplay as some who cosplays just want to be kawaii, otaku, be like Alodia, etc. I don't care about that but I care if they have a few or some knowledge about their character. Cosplay is also like theater but done in the streets. Then there is that topic if cosplay is also fashion. Japan is doing it and they don't care.

@LostChildOfTime10 жыл бұрын
It's called aesthetics. It's like being a gay male, but admiring how pretty a woman is. You are allowed to like whatever you experience in life and take from it what you will. This is what an artist does. *Cosplayers are artists*.
@LostChildOfTime10 жыл бұрын
***** Unless you have no idea what art is, they are artists. Emulating the aesthetic value of an original design is no different than re-drawing a picture of a character or painting what's outside your window. Look at the creation process of anyone who designs or re-creates clothes/costumes from the ground up. Or are you suggesting that they aren't "real" artists like they're not "real" fans because they don't do art or express fandom the way -you- and a small group of people see fit? Every little or enormous thing around you is a form of art from a USB drive to the planets in outer space. Cosplayers being artist is not an opinion, it is a fact. Pretty sure Alpha clearly stated that being a fan of something isn't always static, but at times progressive. There are people who are new fans of something and decide to create the character and potentially become bigger fans later on by diving into that character's game, book, etc.. You gain absolutely nothing from judging them. In fact you lose out on the opportunity to possibly encourage them to be more interested in said character/series, but possibly make them less interested in the "fanbase." But this won't happen if those "hardcore" fans are only concerned with themselves, incapable of making a connection with people who don't already share the same prejudices. How you like what you like does not define what it means for everyone to be a fan and it is unfair to assume all cosplayers cannot be hardcore fans.
@GoranOreskovic10 жыл бұрын
Who read that in Tichondrius' voice?!?!
@LostChildOfTime10 жыл бұрын
You do realize that you don't necessarily have to perform to justify being an artist. You say it's merely the process, but the process is what drives the whole thing to it becoming art in the end, don't you think? It is that creative process which in my opinion, defines the artist, but I'll get to that later. You misinterpreted what I said, so no. Kids who dress up for halloween are not artists for putting on a costume. But if they make that costume? Why not? Mind you cosplayers don't make a costume once a year, and feeling like you are emulating a character you're dressed up as isn't exclusive to being a child. Fashion models perform on a runway, but they are not artists for wearing something they did not create. That is the designer, correct? Thus the designer is the artist, so what makes the cosplayer any different? You say it's what the cosplayers does with it - um... creating and wearing for a photoshoot (by yes, a photographer, though some have been successfully self-shot) that includes themed backgrounds (real or photoshopped) & poses to further express the character isn't enough of a performance? That is literally what they do... or did you think it stopped at playing dress-up while taking selfies as if it were halloween at cons? In the child-like sense, it is halloween every day a cosplayer puts on their work. Some cosplayers refuse to make costumes of characters they aren't truly connected to. They also do one more thing fashion designs do - sell their product. You say they must perform in their work for it to be art which only says that's how you see it as art... and that's okay. Artists, especially cosplayers never need to do what they do to please someone else. You oversimplify the creation process with planning and sequence but overlook imagination and the possibility of improvising. Some cosplayers aren't going to be the perfect model for that character, thus what they design must accommodate their proportions. If a cosplayer does not have access to certain fabrics, colors, equipment, etc. making their work as accurate as possible, what they planned may not always work out, so now there's room for creativity. Not all cosplay follows every detail of the character represented (purposely, or not, which can be personal). For example, the cosplayer wants to make a swimwear or armored version of say the Sailor Moon cast. Doesn't exist in the canon, but it is still art. You can worry about your own... dildos. This is a tone-less, text based argument. Something's bound to look out of bounds when it's actually not... such as you last paragraph contradicting your first? I suppose if you thought I was throwing dildos at you, I trust your catch of them is as firm as the meat and potatoes of your response.

Any time I go to a con, one of the best parts of the experience is seeing all the cosplayers. It's fun trying to recognize all the various characters brought to life. Last time I was at one, I saw a male Lightning, costume accurate in every way, save trading her mini skirt for shorts. Or seeing all the people cosplaying as The Doctor, 10 and 11 being the most popular. Occasionally 4, I don't tend to see the others too often, if at all. But I'm not going to tell these people they're not real fans for only dressing up as the 21st Century versions, the ones they most likely came to know the show by. Hell, I came to know the show from the modern series, and still have a ton of the classic to watch. I wish I was half as creative as some of these people. I'd certainly never tell them they're not real fans when they're dressing up as these characters and I'm maybe wearing a T-Shirt of my fandom.

Despite having only played 1 Layton game and the more recent crossover game with Phoenix Wright. I really like Professor Laytons character. Very nice, caring , compassionate and chivalrous. I may not have played every one of those games, but I'll be damned if I can't cosplay as someone as awesome as he is because of it. Thank you for reassuring me of this +AlphaOmegaSin . :)

People need to understand what the meaning of cosplay is. Dressing up for Halloween is one thing, but cosplay is another thing. Cosplay is basically "costume play" ie "roleplaying" ie if I am gonna dress as Link or Zelda, I should at least sound and/or look like him a bit.
@Mediquette10 жыл бұрын
Not saying it's the case... but there might be those that are paid to dress up for promotional reasons... who knows... and who really !@#!ing cares. I once went to a comic-con a few years back where I saw a beautiful girl dressed as Nami, from One Piece. I asked her "is that your favorite character from one piece?" She replied, "I don't know what character this show is from, but it makes my boobs look big." My faith in cosplaying girls was gone.

And thinking about it, I recall this one charmer who said that only Asians should ever be allowed the cosplay, and to hold up their weak argument they used pictures of the worst cosplays imaginable, and then used pictures of professional cosplayers. It's like saying you should never be able to drive unless you've driver an indie car, or that you shouldn't ever cook unless you've run the kitchen in an upscale restaurant.

I love seeing cosplayers because like you said AlphaOmegaSin, it's amazing to see a character you love come to life. I've never actually been to a convention but I watch a lot of KZbin videos about them. I'm hoping I can go to a Anime Convention or BlizzCon in the next couple years. The way I see it if these people are spending their own time and money to make or buy said costume, it makes them as much as fan as anyone else. Now when it comes to "Booth Babes", they are normally getting paid to dress that way. Sometimes they are actual fans and enjoy whatever they are cosplaying as. Which sucks for them because it's practically a job and they can't enjoy their time there to the fullest. But if they're not who cares? So to those offending by them shut your damn mouth and respect them. They are still human and deserve your respect, no matter if they're cosplaying for fun or being paid by a company to do it. Also this isn't just referring to females, I include all genders in this. Pretty much, respect everyone and enjoy your time at whatever convention or event you're at. Because if you're going around quizzing everyone on their knowledge of something, you are taking away from your own personal experience, not theirs. Lastly, amazing video AlphaOmegaSin. I always enjoy watching your videos because you're not afraid to speak your mind.

AlphaOmegaSin That's exactly the problem with people nowadays. They can't appreciate something for what it is. In the 20 years of being a gamer, almost 21 years and planning to mark the occasion with a Dishonored tattoo on my left hand with the Mark of the Outsider. (powers not included) Anyway back to the subject, there have been plenty of games I love the hell out of and I've heard fanboys over and over do the same shit all the way to saying it sucks just because it's not on the system they like.

I think there are a lot of contributing factors when it comes to people on the internet. Sensitivity to ego has been on the rise, and the lines between keeping personal and relevant information separate from real life and online have blurred. Well, I feel like there's a lot of ego going on, which is why I don't like associating with large groups of people or the KZbin community. There are some great people, like alpha, and on occasion, MrRepzion. However, there's a reason why I have a limited online presence, and it's because of people being driven by their ego. xD

Yeah, the 90s was *totally* this perfect time where Saddam Hussein totally *didn't* invade Kuwait and cause all that Gulf War mess. I love this video, we can always rely on Alpha to get straight to the core issues. I'd love to cosplay/crossplay at conventions but for these reasons I'm extremely hesitant because of so many incidents involving rude or even aggressive people hating on cosplayers - So many people out there riding on high horses, its unbelievable sometimes. Why can't these types just accept that not everyone is a professional cosplayer who looks nearly identical to the characters they are dressing up as, or accept the fact that they just might like how the character looks and doesn't know much information about the character or background.
@DAVEB77810 жыл бұрын
I get what you are saying AlphaOmegaSin but it's when the people who don't belong there trying to fit in because it's trendy. Ok someone linked this in my FB group, so I thought I'd come post my 2 cents. It is the people who go around playing Cosplay Gods judging everyone that give Cosplayers a bad name. Who cares how much a fan someone is.. Compliment them, build them up so they will get excited and spend more money to support the franchises you are such a fan of.. They are helping it live on. As a cosplayer, I only hate other cosplayers who think they're gods of cosplay who turn out to be wierdos who just want attention and will run and hide from other cosplayers so they don't have to interact with anyone else in their supposed fandom (heard that story at AWA over the weekend). Yeah, but I'll refuse to take a picture of someone who tells blocks of the elevator so only they can ride it (2 girls, actually) because they don't want you get near them. That's because they're horrible people; different situation there, however. And I've never actually met anyone who quizzed over a desire to cosplay as a character; I've only met nice Cosplayers. Gurren Lagann cosplay encounter was the best. And honestly, I'd tell them to fuck off if someone decided to quiz me.

Not to mention, that people can't let the cosplayers cosplay what they want. It's not just only the original design. People can also cosplay fan art of the characters, make a non-sexy character sexy or make a sexy character not sexy. It's about fun in the end. Many fans are getting toxic because of that, thinking they are entitled of being called a "real" fan. Hey! I played a lot of games, watched a lot of anime and cartoons to remember every freaking little detail of it. Stop getting your panties in a bunch. Just drink your coffee (or whatever you drink to make yourself feel better) and go about your day. No need for more negativity when we are still receiving a lot of it outside of the geek circle. Anyway, another great vid, Alpha. You have been missed.

A guy I work with is a self-proclaimed audiophile and prefers hi-res digital tracks and vinyl releases when available. I can't count how many times I've heard him complain about the recent resurgence of vinyl popularity. He's legitimately irritated that people (especially younger adults/kids) who didn't grow up with vinyl have "jumped on the bandwagon" because they probably don't really understand what it is or why it's better. I've tried to reason with him (big mistake, I know) that he should be happy more people are interested so vinyl can continue its comeback which is still good news for him and his hobby. He then puts on his cranky-old-man pants and starts repeating himself. That's when I stop listening, put my headphones back on, and turn around....

Now i only cosplayed at one major convention. And one of the days i went as Rachel from Blazblue. I had no idea what i was doing, i don't know where anything was, it was just me going around with a few friends and checking things out. But talking with people was the best part. A bunch of people asked for my picture and wanted to talk to me about the game. The first question out of their mouth every time "So is rachel your main?" "no, i suck with her. I play noel." After that its great, cosplay is an amazing conversation starter. These people are soo geeked out about you showing off an interest they have, they just want to talk to you. And then you talk about what they are wearing or what you are in line for. Its an incredible experience. Cosplayers do it for fun. It really doesn't matter what people say online. They are gona keep doing it because they like it. And saying they arent a fan is absurd. Simply the fact that the costume exists, shows how much intrest they have in a series/game. And for those cosplayers that have experienced this horrible behavior, keep doing what you are doing... because there is certainly more people interested in seeing you in cosplay than there are people dogging you for it. And we appreciate you *huggles* ^.^

I know a few people who cosplayed certain characters, but they were either 1) not familiar with the series but made the cosplay anyway because they really love the style of the outfit or 2) they can't stand the character but wore it anyway to be part of a cosplay group with their best friends. I've heard stories that from Cosplayers and former cosplayers that people being rude snobs about what outfit they were wearing made them quit cosplaying. Cosplaying is a hobby, an interest and it could be someone's life. A stress-reliever. Cosplaying is fun. I applaud anyone who knows small details and stuff about the things they like. What's not ok is assuming everyone does and needs to follow exact guidelines on how to be a character. That type of harassment and shaming, among others, forces people to lose the will to keep doing something they love. All because some random person who happened to know more details and can remember more accused them of not being worthy of being a fan. A person putting time, money and effort into a costume for an event is just as much of a fan that anyone else at that event. That's the point of going to an event. Why would anyone not like seeing one or more versions of the characters that motivated them to come? So what if they aren't your exact idea of the character, everyone still shares that interest. Or if you don't like it entirely, ignore it!! Simple. Alpha, me and my fellow cosplayers are grateful for standing behind us. And for enforcing common sense. Thank you!

I have no problem with "Cos-players" which is a person who's doing an impression of their favorite character or a character that they like in both appearance and personality(sometimes personality) Actually people who do this are fucking awesome. What really boils my piss is when people (mainly females) who literally seemed to write "Big breasted game characters" On google and chose the skimpiest get up and went with it. Am I saying that girls shouldn't go to a convention with a revealing Cos-play? No it's completely fine, but when people don't even know anything past their cos-plays name and do it for the attention then it goes from "cos-play" to "Thirst-dom" Just my 2 cents

I love talking to people about comic books.Even if someone doesn't know every little thing about the character,its still pretty cool just talking about them.I get a lot of questions about Spider-Man at my college cause of the shirts I wear or the comics they'll see me reading.These questions have led to me meeting other comic geeks which is just great.
