For those who care, it's relatively easy to pull ants out of the death spiral using sugar or a piece of food not far from where they are doing that or you can blow on them to scatter and there's a chance they will find the pheromone Trail again.

The death spiral can be stopped if one ant leaves the circle. This is actually really weird but I learned about this in a linguistics class (I’m a linguistics minor). This is the language of the ants. They emit certain pheromones(?) that tell others what to do and where to go as they work together as a giant family. Since the pheromone is a chemical trail (in this case, most likely leading back home) the ants have no where else to go, and since they are surrounded by it, they must be confused. It would be the equivalent of you sitting in a white room with voices saying “come here” all at once. Confusing. Where is it coming from? Where do you go? However, if it only takes one ant to stray from the spiral to save the entire group. So one ant has to leave. Imagine somebody opened a door for you, now you finally had a place to go. Not so confusing now. :)
