Absolutely disgusting behaviour. He's preventing rescue workers from doing their job. I very much hope there are going to be legal repercussions for this. Shame on this man. Thank you, Guardian, for shedding a light on this.

@Kevin B Well, it's just clearly stated in Article 98 of the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea that you are required to "proceed with all possible speed to the rescue of persons indistress, if informed of their need of assistance". There's no relevance given whatsoever to criminal record, citizenship or any other personal data of the person in distress. Anything regarding the right to stay is dealt with afterwards. How can you even try to defend letting people die?

Stop taking it out on the RNLI. They have a mandate to save anyone no matter what. They are simply performing their duty. Take it up with the politicians not the volunteers who crew the boats. Perhaps one day you'll need rescuing and the RNLI would save you without question or judgement.

Completely agree, I've been rescued by the RNLI before and they're amazing people, they have to save refugees because they're responsible for every life at sea, they had to go out if they wanted to keep their jobs. It's the government and politicians they should be complaining to, not the RNLI.

Do they never ask why these people flee their home country, global warming ,insurrection, warfare that created unimaginable conditions, that Britain in the case of Iraq, Afghanistan , Libya ,Afghanistan were heavily involved in.I only hope these people who show so little empathy, never need to seek refuge in another country. Thank goodness the RNLI show the other face of Britain
