always love watching your videos... the scariest thing about that cave was the thousands of tiny legs, and the creatures they're attached to... tight spaces are one thing... but the thought of spiders in my hair is the stuff of nightmares for me. Also just thinking... That would be a cool cave to 3D scan/map... I've been trying it out around my ways in smallish caves and it turns out really cool... you just need a phone with lidar and an app and it doesn't even take long, like you just walk slowly and capture all angles... just think maybe it'd be a cool way to show your growing audience some of the cool caves you guys visit or some of the things you find down there :)
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker 2 жыл бұрын
Lidar is currently used to map small caves but the caving community seems determined to continue to use the laser system for larger caves. The caving community prefers maps to be minimalistic in the information it offers. Maps are a guide so that others have a general idea about the cave, without giving a detailed explanation. So it's somewhat by intention that better mapping isn't occurring. I suspect it's also a matter of the technology becoming easier to use on a large scale. It's currently difficult to map large caves with lidar. And for the simple phone lidar system, I believe you have to have an iPhone. Which leaves me out because I am not an iProduct user.
@oligould8575

@@EvenDarker cool, I had a suspicion some people already used it for smaller caves… I totally agree that it’s no good for larger caves, if you can’t get within 5 meters of a wall or ceiling it’s not much use, plus it’d take forever… although the detail is fantastic, being able to pass my phone into tight spaces is really handy I totally get why maps should be minimalistic for explorers… but I do think it provides an interesting perspective for none cave explorers too… I’m sure someone smarter than me could get the 3D models to work with VR headsets so they can take a look around I figure there’s probably better devices out there than my iPhone if I wanted to do it properly, but it’s just a hobby and so far I’ve been really impressed by the results (I even scanned a small castle the other day)… I think there are some android phones that have LiDAR too, I don’t think it’s unique to apple, but haven’t really looked tbh Anyway I don’t know how well it would work but I just thought it might look cool in some of your videos… like the ones with the sandcastles… also you could upload them somewhere and leave a link, thousands of your viewers could take a walk around them without having to risk disturbing anything, or even leaving the house… which suits just fine on a cold wet winter’s evening 🙂

I was wondering would two way radios work inside the cave or cell phones?
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker Жыл бұрын
Nope. Nothing works. For this reason a lot of cavers like to work with the same team. They generally know each other's habits and what each other is exploring. We almost always split up in a cave and then some time later in the day we all show back up at the entrance. Like a game of hide-and-seek where nobody's looking.

Just an FYI- some of these cave groups are very cliquish. You can attend for years and never even be invited to go caving, so I wouldn't bet on it. It doesn't even seem believable that people can be so unwelcoming, but sadly its true in some cases.
