My husband always said he wasnt a cat person. Grew up with a dog. Then we meet a cat that our friend needed fostering for. So, knowing that any animal could win his heart, brought the cat home. We were told she was not people friendly. Would hiss and be scared of anyone. By week two she was his 'baby girl'. He would move heaven and earth for her. We foster failed (moreso no one wanted her) but it was fine, as the cat we were told hated people (and she was a bit standoffish at first) would greet us with a chirp as we got home. She would purr as we sat by her to watch birds. Shed sneak into our room at night to snuggle with our legs as we slept, like we wouldnt notice. Its like she didnt want us to know she loved us. He cried the first time she nudged into his hand as he pet her, wanting more affection. He eventually said, after she passed away and he was so so heart broken...that he still loved dogs, but a cats love was so speacial to him. It felt earned. RIP Emma.❤ Cats have the ability to change lives.❤ ❤❤

The longer you spend time together the more "automatic" the consent becomes lol. I can hold my cat in a weird position and pet her pretty much everywhere and she just purrs. 🤧 Never scratched me on purpose. We tease each other as a game (poking, running, splashing water) it's the most sibling like relationship I've had with an animal so far. Once I was taking a shower and my cat started meowing frantically behind the door. When I opened the door she looked at me straight into the eyes, gave an excited (and provoking) MRRRP sound, let her back feet slide and scratch against the floor dramatically before she sprinted away. Everytime I closed the door she would do the same again. She did it at least 5 times before I stopped opening the door lol.

Cats dont choose anyone, as they have no idea what is happening and why you are there. The cats that 'pick out humans' are the most social and curious ones. They behave the same way with nearly anyone. While the shy cats hardly ever gets picked out. They can be just as loving as the more outgoing cats. So people, dont forget: cats arent human, they dont actually know the purpose of your visit. Choose the shy cat, they are sweet too.
@jessicam7252 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I think this is the reason some cats kind up back at the shelter for misbehavior, when the owner doesn't take into consideration how the cats reacts to them when adopting.
@cerveza22972 жыл бұрын
Nope, nope, nope. Get yourself a dog. Dogs respect their human. Cats are like guinea pigs. Kittens are adorable and needy, after that they're cats.
@ladycoyote9922 жыл бұрын
Cats DO choose their human. You can adopt a cat you want, but if it doesn't want to be with you, there's no helping it. A cat that genuinely doesn't want to live with a particular human will try to escape and have 'behavioral' issues, because they don't want to be there. Of course, humans can bond with a cat and the cat can come to like their owners, but in cases where that doesn't happen, the cat usually runs away if they get the chance. Additionally, there are TONS of people that have happened upon strays or a stray has come to their home and decided to stay. Foster cats, too can decide they like their environment and the humans in it, so they indicate they want to stay.

2 caveats I tend to give as a long-time cat lover who seriously considered a cattery of some sort at one time - Try to identify the dominant breed if possible because each breed has its own personality and needs. i.e. ragdolls are natural people lovers and good with kids and no joke about tortoiseshell cats having cattitude. Siamese are like the Huskies of the cat world which are vocal drama cats. - Let the cat choose you. It is always said you don't always own a cat but the cat owns you. If you can let the kitten/cat choose you, it most likely will match your energy A stray cat had a litter at my place. Out of the 4 kittens, the lone gray one (the other 3 were spitting images of their father, another stray) left her pack while they were in the middle of play and crawled up on my chair at the age of 6 weeks. We have been together as "Siamese twins" ever since.

This so many dont understand, but if you put effort into learning cat behavior and body language and are able to tell when they want love and when they’d rather not and what is a “love bite” or what’s anger, also ultimately if your not willing to get bit or scratched in play or anger or accident than a cat is not a good choice…. They say if you slow blink at your cat and they slow blink back they love you and studies have found this releases oxytocin in both and human if a cat sleeps close with his belly upward it’s a sign of total trust and others…. Cats are known to be attracted to people who act completely uninterested. Since they hate being smothered most of the time, in their minds, when someone hates them, they're just giving them their space which is what cats want the most! Dogs love us because of 40 000 years of genetic bonding. We have only had cats about 3000 years. They are different, but not better or worse than dogs. Dogs can be high energy, high maintenance, lots of hugs and play. Some people like that. But cats are more gentle, subtle, they show their affection through more acute means, tail in the air, slow blinking etc. They aren't naturally as physical and rough as dogs, but they will just crawl up with or near you and curl up to sleep while you're watching TV. That means the fat feels safe and loved, it is willing to leave itself unguarded with you. Cats just show their love differently. But they have the capacity to be just as affectionate. On her advice I watched a bunch of videos with The Cat Whisperer: Jackson Galaxy, and learned that the reason I was scared of cats was because I didn't know how to read them. I finally adopted my Lucy at 4 months, and we were just a perfect match! She was very scared of humans, to a point they almost put her down, and I was so ready to give her a second chance. People have so many misperceptions of cats. Any of the cats I have ever had wanted attention and cuddling all the time. They did not want to be left by themselves. Cats are more independent than dogs and not near as much trouble. I never had cats that were destructive but I provided scratching posts, toys etc. to distract them. Cats can be trained and the greatest advantage is cats don't BARK. I am disgusted with most dog owners because they allow their dogs to stay outside and obsessively bark without any consideration for neighbors. Unfortunately this has led to me disliking dogs when it is actually the owners who are idiots.
@marinabecerra94722 жыл бұрын
Same for me! Some people leave their dogs outside and they bark like there's no tomorrow. It's so annoying, and it is one of the main factors that has led me to disliking dogs, but I also have cynophobia, so that is also a big factor.

I don't like that cat owner let their cats outside and kill other animals though. I do like song birds you know. I like seeing them hopping about the trees and chirp and sometimes I feed them and they're happy. Even watching the territorial behaviour of some smaller birds is really interesting. stray cats are also really bad for the local wild/forest cat population. there's a chance they will just die out. :(

My neighbor's dog will bark for 10, 20, or 30 minutes before the owner does anything. Then it's just another 10 minutes of her yelling "JACK!" - while the dog continues to bark. This happens several times a day. This woman also constantly has people coming over and evidently, she's instructed them to honk their horns as they pull up in the driveway - even if it's after midnight. Constant barking, yelling, and honking. I've even had to yell at her several times for playing loud music in her backyard at 7-8 am. When they have parties or a bunch of friends over to watch the game, it's not inside their house - it's in the back yard. Some people have _absolutely no_ self awareness or consideration for others. I've done everything from talking to them, to yelling at them, to calling the cops on them and nothing ever changes. I really despise people like that.

For me it's worse. I live in apartment and neighbors will leave their dog/dogs inside all day and they bark insistently. They never shut up. And the hallway acts as a sound tunnel so it sounds like it's outside your door and not down at the end of the hall. The hall also makes the barking sound louder.

My mom was a big 'no cat' person until I was 18 when she got me a rescue cat for my birthday. She lived a decade with us and we loved her so much, and afterwards I've always rescued cats; had a black cat and an orange tabby for several years, and now happily have a tortie and a proper calico with my gf. Both are what we call velcro cats - they want to be by our side all the time. In our laps at our computers, laying on us at night, etc. The calico likes to lay across my gf's chest all the time, and the tortie likes to be a neck scarf for me when I'm sitting down. They're the greatest little gremlins

When I had children, I realized how easily they could be *my* cats not theirs if I was the one who fed them and played with them. So I supervised the children and helped them be responsible for them as well as loving them. One day I was cleaning upstairs and the cat was sleeping nearby. Then I went to the kitchen to clean and there was the cat sleeping on a chair. She must have teleported. Only one child then and she remained my son’s cat. But after that, I was aware that wherever I was, she was there sleeping. Ditto with succeeding children and cats. The lesson: cats are affectionate even when they don’t want anything from you-food or cuddles. They went to the children for that. They just like being with you. Food and cuddles are extras.

He's my precious angel. I was thinking about him all day at work because a close friend's cat died and I was sad and just couldn't wait to see my guy when I got home so to see him run towards me and love on me was so beautiful causeI know he was missing me too!

As I've worked in the shelters for several years, dogs definitely want boundaries and alone time as well, cats are just more vocal and straightforward about saying no. People who said they prefer dogs because they think dogs always want to be with the owners certainly don't understand boundaries and probably don't get much attention from human interaction and or lack social skills/awareness so they're overcompensating.

Honestly, even dogs can differ, even within the same breed. For example I have a golden retriever, while my brother has two duck tolling retrievers and a shiba inu. My dog loves anyone and anything, and loves nothing more than cuddles. The Shiba can be affectionate when he wants to be, but quite often walks away when he's had enough. As for the tollers, one is an absolute snuggle bug that loves nothing more than sitting on your lap, however she's terrified of children, and every man that comes into their house has to survive 5-10 minutes of being barked at before she starts being okay with them. The other toller actually dislikes affection and will get up and leave if you start stroking her.

@@SilentPsychopath Yep. I think it's a bias that non-dog owners have, because the only dogs they'll get introduced to are likely the super nice, friendly kind. This is sooooooo timely. We had a stray cat come to our house a couple weeks ago. We have several in our neighborhood but this one looked pathetic. She was incredibly skinny and dusty. Her fur needed a good brushing out and she was skittish. It was a very hot day and she just laid in our driveway in the hot sun. I ran inside the house and got her water and a can of tuna. She came right up to me and I felt so sorry for her. After she ate, she hopped right up in my lap and started to purr. The poor thing looked exhausted. I laid her on a blanket that night on a chair and kept an eye on her through my cameras throughout the night. I couldn't stop worrying about her. The next morning at 8am my husband said "That cat is back!" and I ran outside to feed her. Later that afternoon, I went to get her food and ended up buying a couple cat bowls, food and a toy for her. I got back late at night and I was crying on my way home because I thought she'd go hungry all night because it was so late. I was so happy when she showed up at 11pm when I'd go outside looking for her. All night I worried about her. I went online and ordered a collar for her and wrote a note and attached it to the pendant asking if she had an owner, would they text me to let me know because I was worried about her because she was so sweet and kept visiting me. A few days later, my neighbor text me saying how clever I was to write a note. Apparently she was abandoned when our old neighbor sold their home and left her behind. She had been on her own for maybe 5 months! 😢 They had fed her whenever they saw her every few days. They were going to take her to a shelter now that it was starting to get cooler at night, when they saw the collar on her with the message "Please check for note!" I told them I'd take care of her until we figured out what to do with her and see if she was microchipped to find her owner. She wasn't microchipped but in the meanwhile seeing I didn't know what to do with her yet, I ordered a 2 story cat mansion with a cat safe heated pad inside to make sure all the cats had a safe place to rest on our porch because I was so afraid for her. A week ago, it started to rain and she was gone all day. I kept getting up out of bed all through the night to call for her (I'd named her "Pepper" on the second night and she instantly started coming when I'd call her!) and she finally came up soaking wet at at 2am. After sitting outside with her for awhile, I decided to bring her inside to warm up despite knowing our English Bulldog would NOT be happy. I sat with her for 5 hours through the night and let her out the next morning before my family woke up. My husband looked on our Ring camera and saw I had snuck her in and just smiled at me asking if our visitor was still here. That day, I went out and got her a bed, a kennel, cat litter box, blanket, toys, scratch play structure, EVERYTHING needed for her. I also got a collar with an Apple Air Tag on it, so I could track her when she wanted out. Otherwise I'd go insane worrying where she was. From that night on, we've brought her inside each night and throughout the day until she asks to go outside to visit her other cat friends. For the past 2 weeks, Pepper has started to trust all of us and goes outside for maybe an hour a day and prefers to be inside with us. We're all in love with her-(well except for the dog, but that's another story!) She's had a full checkup, received her shots and is scheduled to be spayed and microchipped on Tuesday. She's the sweetest cat ever and has always curled up in the exact same spot where I sat with her the night I snuck her in that rainy night. She just assumes that's her spot. It's amazing how she's changed our lives in a few weeks. We went from being full on dog lovers, never owning a cat, to thinking Pepper is the sweetest, most amazing cat EVER to walk this planet. I'm so happy she came to me that sunny afternoon. I can't imagine how someone could leave this precious being behind! When she sleeps now, she sleeps so content, instead of waking up at every sound. She knows she's finally safe. Her days of fending for herself are gone forever. She'll have the best fur-ever home for the rest of her days. 😻 I love you sweet Pepper!❤

My husband swore he didn't like cats! I had cats from the day I can remember at 3 years of age. My Irish grandmother swore..."Love me, Love my cat!" Well I had this gorgeous white Pursian that was affectionate but at the same time could snatch a critter in the blink of an eye if it happened to come in the house. I had a beautiful Himilan that never left our yard but would bring live lizards into the house as gifts for the Persian that never went out .... The Persian had the habit of sitting on the floor next to my husband while he built remote control airplanes. The Persian would scrabble around in the parts box every time my husband reached in for a part. This annoyed my husband and he would push the cat away. So.....the Persian went to his toy box of wind up fish I put in his water bowel....took it to the parts box my husband had and dropped the fish in. This angered my husband, so he took the fish and threw it down the hall. The cat ran to retrieve the fish and droppit back in the box. This happened over and over until finally my husband realized the cat got one over on him. From then on he liked that cat and it was a game they played often. We had the cat 22 years and when we had to face the inevitable, my husband cried harder than I did. He was shocked at how much he had come to love a cat. Then I got a lanky, springy, feisty female Tabby that looked like an exotic and my husband was wary of it because she was born to a feral litter. He kept asking me if I was sure I wanted a cat like that. I called her Sassy. She settled right in with the dogs and was the alpha of the pack. She was amazing and made us laugh every day with her antics. When she passed my husband cried over her too. The wonderful thing is my husband introduced me to the love of dogs and from my cats, he learned the love of cats.

She's calmed down just a little bit now but she waits for me to go to sleep when I work in my office, even when it's very late 🥺 (special mention to being chronically ill and having a kitty here to support me through this). My other cat is also a sweetie, he's comforted me during meltdowns and sad times, literally drying my tears by brushing himself against my face. I kid you not he's even made biscuits on my back while I was sitting, his paws when up my back (I was pain everywhere in my body). Cats are more sensitive and understanding than we give them credits for.

The reason she wanted a cat was for company while caring for her chronically ill husband at their home. He begged her to do so because he didn't want strangers around. That meant she had to give up running her beloved business, which was very hard for her because it was nearly her whole life. She hated the boredom and loneliness of being stuck home all the time.
