My maternal grandpa has been struck by lightning 9 times and is still alive having turned 77 this year. The first time was in 1990. I did not know it was a world record he’s broke. He also does not suffer any health problems from the lightning.

I feel like there's a piece missing in the baseball story. You forgot about the person who batted after him. The only way for an out like that to remove a run is on a force out. Merkle reached first on a single, putting the winning run on 3rd. The next batter, Al Bridwell, got a base hit too, allowing the runner at third to score, but Merkel didn't touch second before moving to celebrate with his team, allowing the second baseman to take the ball and touch 2nd, leading to a force out that erases the run. If he'd gotten a single, the winning run had scored, and he'd just been between first and second, trying to stretch a single to a double, him being out after the run scored wouldn't matter. In a non-force out scenario, it's effectively a race. If the runner is tagged out before the run crosses the plate, no run is marked.
