For story 11 people don't realize how serious SBS is. SBS is when an infant is shaken and so its head wobbles and since its bones are mostly cartilage the veins can slip out of place and get constricted by the spine causing blood flow to and from the brain to slow or sometimes even stop causing a bloated head and bleeding eyes and eventually killing the baby via a stroke. If you are stressed and your baby won't stop crying put it down because crying won't kill it but shaking it will.

To explain the reason why I think they didn’t fully sedate that guy who was getting an incision in their arm pit is because the doctors were probably worried they wouldn’t have woken up. I’m just a highschool student in an EMT class though so take what I say with a grain of salt, I just know that certain situations need different types of anesthetics which also depend on the patient’s condition and the severity of it. Plus anesthetics can slow down a person’s breathing. This is just my take on it, idk why I randomly fixated on that part, I guess it’s just because I’ve been in a bunch of medical classes throughout highschool pfff

IIRC, it's because the chest cavity is filling with air/blood (AKA a Pneumothorax/Hemothorax) and they need to stop that as soon as possible, meaning there just isn't time to put someone under. Especially considering they'd been bleeding out for around 30 minutes at that point? I'd wager they're extremely lucky to be alive today.

By luck, I wasn't in the attempted terrorist bombing of the "underwear bomber" in the plane Northwest airline 253 on 25th December 2009 from the Netherlands to Detroit. The travel agency called me if I wanted to take the same flight a week earlier for half the original price. Ofc I said yes to an extra vacation week. While in the US I didn't hear about the bombing, I heard about it in the airport on my way back. The realization that was the flight I was supposed to take made the flight home the scariest ever. Extra info: it was an attempted bombing cuz the bomb caught fire instead of going off. A brave passenger overpowered him, the fire was stopped and everyone lived.

I've accidentally consumed 2 poisons In my life. First time was when a poison Dart frog escaped from its container. I, being my knowledgeable self, knew that I could handle the poison Dart frog as long as I was careful NOT to put my fingers in my mouth. As I'm on my way to a special sink that has grit scrub and a special soap for poisions... I stick my finger in my mouth to lick off some peanut butter from before I had to handle the froggo... lets just say I looked back at my hand, the at the handler who was taking me to the sink, and then back at my hand, and then saying, "Call the EMT, I just licked my hand by accident." I still washed my hands and felt completely fine while I was escorted to the hospital. My body did eventually try to retch and it became really hard to move, I felt sluggish for like a whole of 10 mins before I came to my senses. The doctor still treated me, but said that she was surprised that my body managed to disperse the toxins as well as it did. The second time was when I inhaled a little too much hydrochloric acid fumes during an experiment. Once again my handy dandy weird body abilities came in clutch by simply causing me to exhale literally anything in my lungs before taking a deep breathe in. Minor burns but nothing bad!

🤣 the reason you’re conscious during a chest drain is because 1) it’s not hugely painful - just uncomfortable with the local anaesthetic as you said. 2) it’s an emergency procedure - we have to do it asap to get you breathing properly again! A tension pneumothorax can cause cardiac arrest! We simply don’t have the time to put you under GA!

My dad has a few of these stories. When my parents started dating, my dad got a job at a gas station near my mom, and found out that a girl who worked there a few months prior was founded in the dumpster after a customer used a payphone to call the cops because the gas station was completely unattended. The station got some protective shielding for the employees behind the counter before my dad started because of that. A few months into working there my dad was closing up and saw a car stalled in the empty parking lot, and called the police, like a half an hour later, a cop car pulls into the lot and the stalled car peels out of there. My dad talked to the officer and found out the operator didn't even put his call forward to any officers, the cop was just driving by and thought the car was suspicious. Needless to say, my dad's boss was furious when she found out, called the station and laid into the operator's supervisor. Not sure if anything was done, but I am convinced that cop saved my dad. And then when my dad was in college, he was with a couple of friends, and one of the friends got drunk and trapped my dad in the guy's room with him, and had the two women in the house ( another friend and the guy's mom) bring him all of the guns in the house. He found out after a bit that they were unloading the guns before bringing them, and he yelled at them about it, so out of fear for their lives, they brought in the guns loaded. After a couple hours, the guy picks up a gun, points it at my dad and fires. Luckily, he picked up an empty one. The guy's mom convinced him to let my dad and his friend go, and they left to get the police, but by the time police got there he had shot himself. They got him to the hospital and stabilized him, but as soon as he was out he finished the job. I never met the guy, it happened before my parents even met, but apparently the guy was a good friend. My dad vaguely spoke about it when I was a kid (like stating he lost a friend), but I didn't find out about it fully until I was in highschool. I'm surprised he doesn't have really bad ptsd, because that was over the course of an entire day.

They took the phone as evidence because he was stabbed in the altercation. That night my ex showed up at my door with a hammer in his pants and he was not happy with me. He sat on my bed and pulled the hammer out of his pants, he kept asking me what I did with the phone and I had a literal panic attack. I had a bad feeling about neighbors down the street who were of the rougher sort and really into light drugs and abusing alcohol. Our kids were around the same age, and they played together sometimes as littler kids but I wanted them at my house. Our boys were separated by a year in school and I was relieved because as they got older they found friends in their own grades. Family members were like “why don’t you have those kids around anymore, they were around a lot previously?” They thought the kids were such good friends. I could have furthered that relationship if I wanted but I didn’t because I could see the writing on the wall about how this would end. Some people wallow in what they know, and others rise above it. Fact was that my bio dad was around drunks and stoners a lot when I was a kid and they weren’t very functional good people who could be trusted to do the right thing…because substance abuse. I’m sorry, they just weren’t and they didn’t put out good or trustworthy vibes. And quite frankly my bio dad was the same sort and I just didn’t want anything to do with it anymore. I’m the “rise above it” sort. It comes with a rough crowd, let’s be honest here. Fast forward and the little boy that grew up with the rough family got shot in a drug deal gone wrong. If my son had stayed friends with him, he likely would have done drugs too-maybe even been around people like that. And even later on that that-our area’s local pot dealer (prior to legalizing) and his ten year old kid were home when some of his rougher clientele stopped by. He let them in to buy drugs. Little did he know that these junkies had zero intention to PAY for the drugs, oh no. Their bright idea was to rob him and kill him. Steal the drugs, steal the money in the house. So they tied up him and his little boy and stabbed them to death. Or at least they thought so. The grown man died alright-but his 10 year old had been tied up a little too tightly with cords to the point that it formed a tourniquet that slowed his blood flow. By the time someone found them, he was still alive enough to save. The problem? One of the knife stabs severed this child’s spinal cord and he never walked again. Not to mention the massive trauma he suffered emotionally laying dying full of stab wounds next to his dead father in a pool of blood all night. He recognized the killers as former buyers and tearfully said “I thought you were our friends? Why are you doing this to us???” They ignored him and stabbed him repeatedly anyway. I heard that he’s a drunken drug addicted angry mess as a man. He has never been ok again for obvious reasons. And he never took another step again, confined to a wheelchair. This is why I didn’t want my kids near mind altering substance users. I remembered that feral not all there scary look in the eyes of my dad’s druggy friends. I remember just automatically knowing that I wasn’t safe, recognizing that dangerous feral crazy mean dog gleam in their eye and getting the hell away from them and staying away. I was too little to understand it, but I knew it meant “danger”. Instinctively knew. The neighbor kid got shot young and never did anything with his life. My son was in extra curricular activities in school to keep him busy and out of any sort of trouble (idle hands, am I right?) as well as had an after school part time job to pay for his car insurance which also kept him busy and out if trouble-and he became a CO (jailer) at a police department as an adult. I don’t think it’s coincidence how these two paths diverged.

My mom had a pretty crazy childhood. One day, when her parents were out, one of her sisters hid the brother's drugs, and he got a hunting rifle and tried to kill them all. All of them hid under the porch, and the sound of the shotgun made my mom scream. He found them but had a hard time getting the gun under to shoot. He missed my mom's head but managed to shoot into one of her other brother's leg. She still says he was her favorite brother. Most of her other siblings were nasty towards her, and she has no contact with them now. But he was the sweetest towards her. It was the drugs that took her loving brother from her, and he then later overdosed while living alone.

The prompt makes me think of all the students in the US who avoided school shootings because they weren't at school for whatever reason; or people on their way to a mall, concert, movie, or generally anywhere and were stalled or diverted before a mass shooting. Reminds me of the Seth McFarlane story that he missed a flight due to a hangover that ended up being one of the four hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001.

My mother, under the belief that we were going to this awesome place for my 7th birthday, drove me halfway across the state. She then passed this farmland, pulled into it, and told me to get out. I thought nothing of it, and then she told me three words that haunt me to this day. "I love you." She then proceeded to turn me, her 7 year old son into swiss cheese, landing 7 bullets inside me, two landing and shattering my spine, rendering me paralyzed. The fear of dying and my screams for help managed to get the attention of the landowner, and brought me to a hospital. She has never been arrested for this. Got away scot-free. She's dead now. I wanted to be the one who did the deed, but she went from cancer. She earned it. I spent 23 years homeless and in a wheelchair, the latter is a lifelong matter. But my hatred for her has kept me alive for almost 30 years. I shouldve died. I know that. I owe the farmer and his family my life, and I haven't forgotten. I still to this day, do not trust women of any age, nor do I trust anyone who says those words.

Then this guy enters the closet, picks up a massive cinder block, and holds it above his head(like, with the intention to smash it into my skull 'as a joke'). I was terrified, and I ran away. I told administration, they did nothing.) edit: apparently people think this is fake or something, i have no reason to lie about this its just a stupid story yall gotta chill out edit 2: i swear to god stop arguing in the comments i dont care if you think i made this up go away and leave me alone smh

When doing some target practice in Alaska with a couple friends we had some random person we couldn’t see try to shoot/snipe us from across a lake as we where shooting into a dirt hillside to ensure that no ricochets occur to ensure safety. It has been awhile since I had any hydration so I reached down to the ground to get my water bottle and less than 2-3 seconds after bending over we heard the double clack of a high powered rifle, felt the vibrations of the bullet flying between us/over my head, and the ricochet of it hitting a rock behind us. We ended up rushing to take cover and had to wait about 6 hours to ensure that we had enough darkness to be able to leave carefully because we kept trying to spot the shooter but had no luck doing so.

I remember being like. 12 or 13 or somewhere around that age, and my dad and I decided to visit my half sister in Ohio. We were in Cincinnati when I noticed some guy following us, but my naive self didn't think much of it. The next time I noticed the guy, he was walking directly behind my dad, and holding a gun to his back. He didn't say anything, just followed us with this gun held against my dad's back who surprisingly didn't notice. But I did. And not thinking, I asked the guy "Hey sir, why are you doing that to my dad?" And he looked at me for a few seconds, which made my dad notice the dude, and he began reaching for the knife in his pocket since he carries one everywhere. The guy continued to stare at us before he just walked away. My dad later on checked his pockets and nothing had been stolen by the guy. It was one of the weirdest things I've ever witnessed

Not sure if this counts as, dumb luck, but many years ago i worked in Japan. I shared a small apartments with some roommates, just of one the main streets in roppongi. Not the best area. One night i was walking home pretty drunk.. and by myself. All very stupid looking back. As i was crossing the street away from the busy part i noticed a guy following me. But didn't really pay him much attention since i was almost home. When i passed a part where during the day they were building new apartments, basically an empty lot, he was behind me and put his arm around my neck, and he tried to pull me into the empty lot. I think because im quite tall he couldn't quite get his arm on just my neck. And i bit him. I bit him hard. Hard enough to draw blood and he let go. I ran across the street where there was a 7-11 and just stayed there shaking untill i figured he left. And went home. Shaking. I never reported it or anything. Dumb. But i was young dumb and drunk. I kind of thought it was my fault for walking by myself in that state. Older me knows it wasn't offcourse. But never forgot that.

Idk when this happened, but under the YCJA (the currently effective youth criminal justice act) which governs the processing of young offenders 12-17 there is an exception that allows for older teenagers aged older than 14 to be processed as an adult, usually this will only be used for the ones that are 16/17. The offender in the story was 17 so it really could’ve been an adult sentence. If the crime is a serious indictable crime that is likely to shock the conscience of our society, the judge technically has the discretion to process the offender as an adult. It’s a quite rare choice for the judge to take, but it IS within their power to. Source: I’m Canadian. I majored in criminology in university, I’ve taken classes in youth offender justice.

When I was 6, some older girls got some younger children to get me to come out to play. Long story short, they locked me in a chicken coop and poured turpentine down my throat and all over me. They tried to set fire to me with a match, but the matches were damp. I managed to squeeze out through the flap the chickens used to go outside but found myself in their outdoor enclosure with 6 foot wire fence. By this time the girls had found a lighter and were trying to get to me through the fence. Suddenly, in the distance, I heard my dad calling me and somehow (I have no idea ow) I sort of vaulted over the fence. My dad was blind, so couldn't see the state I was in as I was puking from th turpentine and he sure could smell it.

This isn’t even close to what some of these people went through, but the closest I’ve been to the feeling of death hanging over me is during a school shooting. It was just a regular day during class, having a grammar quiz (incidentally I was doing terribly), when suddenly we all hear very loud bangs coming from the adjacent classroom. It took until the third bang sound for us to realize what was happening and all go into panic mode at once. Some girls started screaming, some boys jumped up or fell to the ground, our teacher even started screaming and crying. We eventually all huddled into our desks and waited for the worse, when after 9 shots the whole thing stopped. The teachers from other classrooms were running out into the hall, and suddenly the screaming and crying of the students from our adjacent class filled the whole school. They told us all to stay put for like 30 minutes before letting us out of class and calling all of our parents to come pick us up. Turns out a kid from the other class had brought a Glock with him, and he shot the teacher 8 times, after the he knew the teacher was done for he put the gun to his own head too. To this day there is much speculation as to why he did it, but no one really knows for sure, not even the kid’s best friends knew. The only two people who knew why it happened are gone.

my closes death experience ... I had many. ex military and such, but the one with pure dumb luck had to be the one time I didn't feel well at the day I was supposed to go back from a leave, while trying to convince my commander to give me another day at home (I had a fever, like 39 degrees.) I stayed at home, when we suddenly get an alarm, a stubbing terrorist attack happened in the same train stop I was supposed to go on, and the victim was a soldier -the terrorist tried to steal her gun to shoot at the crowed, but she fight him off laying on top of her gun before he was neutralized by the other soldiers that were at the train stop, he attacked from behind in the packed train stop then she died from blood lost few minutes later. truly a hero, she saved hundreds if not thousands of innocents , I took my happy ass back to the base because you need to do a head cunt in cases like that and had a sick days in unit, I never know that girl but I think about her from time to time. I'm not sure I could react the same way she did if someone would suddenly stab me in the throat and back 8 times, I needed to go to another train stop because that one was covered with blood for days, and a 3 weeks later when I got to go to the weekend home that train stop it still smelled like blood. that case made me not go to that train stop for a few years before a person decided to jump to the track at another train stop while I walked down the stairs and his severed head flow on a girl that set next to the stairs, at first no one was sure what it was until she realized what hit her and screamed her brains out when we all run off from the train stop, so I'm back at the old train stop. two weeks ago someone throw something that I'm not sure what on the electrified train track creating a fire ball but it's not as traumatic so I'm still going to that train stop. but in funnier stuff on train stopes, today someone released a bunch of chickens in the train stop and the workers and passengers worked together at catching them, in the end some old couple fed them with some bread before the animal control guy catch them with a net

I don't know if you could consider it a murder attempt but, had an experience of riding my bike out at 2am, I was in the most impoverished area of the city as I was planning to cycle until sunrise, two guys pull over and ask if I wanted to hop in their car and offered weed, I only spoke with the passenger, didn't see the driver's face but I declined their and went on with my cycle, the fact that I don't smoke may have just saved me because after telling a friend about it, I could have been robbed, abducted, or worse killed. I still go out at night since the area I live in is quiet at night and I exploit the fact I am the only sane person at that hour, being out at night so much has impacted my vision incredibly since I grew up sneaking out, being able to see much further and night paired with stamina and speed allows me to avoid situations like these. I have had another encounter which I don't think was a murder attempt but left me awake for days was when I was again cycling in the same area but pulled into a park to drink an rest, pitch black and then all of a sudden, the bushes literally right next me rustled so much, whatever was in there was much bigger than a fox, but this area was urban and densely populated, I froze for a second, until the rustling came closer and I bolted, and when I mean bolted, I left a torch on the bench I was sitting, and I had also accidentally set of the emergency SOS signal on my phone, I had to explain what had happened and I got off lightly but never had I had so much adrenaline. Whoever or whatever was in the bushes was so close and big, I still feel sick about it since I didn't ev en have time to see it. Not seeing but hearing something is horrifying, worse when its next to you.

My legs reflexively kicked downward, causing my foot to stomp on the brake, instantly stalling out the stick-shift car and causing us both to lurch forward. His grip broken, I slid down in my seat and then got away. We were both lucky, actually, because had the car not stalled we would have driven right into an intersection, given the timing of his murder attempt.

We decided we weren’t in the mood for shopping and grabbed some food on the way home. A few days later while at work I hear about a shooting that happened at that mall. I look up an article and the shooting was in the food court at a time that would have pretty much been exactly how long it would have taken us to walk over there, wait for food, and sit down. The majority of people who were dead/injured (I can’t remember) were sitting in the area we usually like to sit in as well. It was a targeted shooting because some gang member was sitting at those tables and a rival gang saw them or something.

I asked if I could get on the bed and lay down he said okay. 40 minutes later I ask if I can go pee he said okay but looked in the mirror and this divine voice inside my head tells me to run out. This experience lead to me becoming a drunk so I meet more people who have tried to kill me this happened 2 more times this has now become a pattern. I remain calm and we have a conversation but I survive because they think I'm stupid. They're like you come off crazy stupid and I feel sorry for you but I do know what I'm doing. I wear a ring on my finger from saving mans's life because I saved a man's life by touching the would be killer's arm and he was baffled at why I would be "stupid" enough to do this but this act caught him off guard and I got inside his head.

You don't need to tell them everything. You don't need to be graphic. All you need to do is explain that there are bad people who will hurt them in this world. Ask a parent before talking to anyone who isn't an immediate family member or a close friend. A car followed me when i was running down the sidewalk and i kept on going faster but it was still with me and i felt like jumping will speed me up so i jumped and jumped while running, and then i crossed the road. It hit me but it didnt, i jumped on top of the car and fell asleep. When i woke up i was in a attic tied to a fridge and i couldn’t get out, The knife was right aside me, same as the scissors. But my peanut brain didn’t see them, So i bited the rope and after a couple hours of chewing it broke and tried to run out of the attic, but the door was locked and i dont know how to unlock these type of doors. So i broke the window and i jumped out of the house, It was a 4 story house but I was perfectly fine! And i didn’t know where my house was, because im in a different country. So i walked 5 hours to the plane station, and i saw Shrek and he was chasing me. So i kicked Shrek’s balls and kept on running, of course. He was moaning in pain! As it was an hour past, i arrived and i sneaked on to a plane, and i watched the clouds even though i have a fear of clouds and planes. But its perfectly fine! The plane was going to exactly the airport 10 minutes away from my house! So i got lucky even though im super unlucky… And 16 hours pass, I arrived at the airport but then 1000 staff members were chasing me, I said stop, And they sadly didn’t listen. Most of them were girls so i cant kick… And, but i used the power of crying and they let me go gogo gogo! So i ran and ran going to 5 stores in the process for food, i arrived at my house after 4 hours of walking. The end uwu~

About a decade ago, my gay friend Eric in Ft Lauderdale was in his meth phase and had a guy he met on Craigslist come over for some poor mannered frivolity. The guy brought some kind of “case” with him which would have been a dealbreaker for me at the door. Well, Eric, let him in. he said there was some awkward, small talk in a dark room, a lot of men in that life just get right to business. Well, the guy started opening his case, but then heard a noise in the apartment. The guy asked what that noise was, Eric told him it was his roommate, which it was. The guy closed his briefcase, and said “he just saved your life.” Got up and left. Eric went to rehab the next day.

Story number 6 I hope the person who stabbed him got in trouble again as an adult, and had to serve time in prison extra time too because of his previous offenses. That’s the only thing I can hope for in the situation if I say what I really want to say KZbin will remove my comment so………

When I lived in Baltimore city as a teenager, young and dumb. I think I was 18 or so, I was walking down a road at night I should have never been on (29th street near Greenmount ave) someone ran up behind me with a gun and said kick it out. I had 20 dollars on me, I gave him the 20 and he told me to give him my phone, I didn't want to so I gave him my g shock watch. He cocked the gun and said do you wanna die? Gimme the phone...so I did. The whole time his friend was like 10 ft away watching. After I gave him my phone the guy watching said "shoot him" . Thank God he did not, he said get the fuck out of here now. Which I did. Scary shit.

I walked into my grandma's house at 5 am, turned around after closing the door to find my BIL holding his service weapon on me, his dog in attack mode. He was completely asleep. Took me 5 minutes to wake him up while begging him to not shoot. He woke up, took his finger off the trigger and put the safety back on, yelled at me for being stupid. I moved in with my boyfriend hours later. Threw everything into a bag and was gone. Still have cptsd because of him. My sister finally divorced him and got full custody of both kids.

I don’t really remember the incident too well… I have trauma related amnesia for most of my life… but one day I was in the kitchen… i think I was 9 or 10 at the time… and I said something to my brother… I can’t remember what I said but he… punched me, I think… and he had me pinned against the kitchen door… I don’t remember what happened… but years later… another one of my brothers… said my brother had a knife in his hand when he attacked me… I don’t remember what happened… I honestly don’t… but… my own brother almost murdered me. I still begin shaking thinking how my life could have ended

Not sure if this counts as a "murder attempt" because it was initially a theft but I had an incident where I found myself staring down the blade of a machete held by a local meth head who'd found his way into my garage and was in the process of trying to strip my car. Thankfully this story has a happy ending as it resulted in said meth head taking 2 shots and running off into the night. I remember sitting and waiting for around half an hour before calling it in to the police, officially my story was that I was in shock and calming myself down before I made the call but in reality it was to give that guy some time to bleed out before the cops went looking because I sure as hell didn't want the guy to survive and to get what he deserved. In typical fashion as well I never received any follow up from the cops so I have no idea if they got him or not. I did have to go down to the station and give statements and turn over the gun I used (never got that back but hey, it was only an old ruger)

@TyroRNG

Like as far as i can find (vague understanding so take it with a grain of salt) 12 or under you cannot be criminally liable 12-13 No jail time 14-17 reduced sentencing/earlier parol when put with a supervising adult 18+ tried as adult (might have been a tier 18-21 which gets a lesser punishment than an adult but worse than 14-17, but again only quickly skimmed it)
