We've been testing out the FIRST FFF 3D printer from ‪@peopoly‬: The #MagnetoX. This beast is unique in that it features a magnetic linear motor, a 1000 watt bed, and features that you would normally only see in printers costing 10x as much!

When I was working in the mechatronics industry, we used linear motors like this for one of our robots, but much larger (2m long gantries). We did have to post warnings about pacemaker risks, around our robot, but the magnets were much stronger. If you got a screwdriver within a hundred mm, the magnet track would grab the tool out of your hand and you would spend the next 10 minutes slowly easing the tool away from it. That's if the force didn't crack a magnet and you'd have to spend the next hour replacing that segment of magnet track. Since that machine was designed, the industry has moved from open surface linear motors like this, to U channel linear motors, where the strongest magnetic fields are contained within the channel, these have a much lower personal and mechanical risks associated with them. They are much easier to keep clean as the open side can be sealed off from the environment, which can be important in industrial or clean room environments. One big advantages of linear rails, by the way, is the fact that you can run multiple motors on the same magnet/encoder track. Our gantry robot had two X tracks running on the Y track, and six heads on each of these X tracks. Imagine being able to print as many copies of an item as you have heads, or switching filament by just moving a head into position rather than changing the tool head. Linear motors offer a world of opportunities.

Yeah, the motors I used were powerful. IIRC, each of the two Y axis motors had 50A amplifiers, accelerated at up 2g and could get to 2m/s on a long move on the 2m track, while the X axis motors were 5A each, could accelerate at up to 5g, and could get to close to 5m/s over their 2m travels. As a programmer, it really concentrated the mind knowing that one mistake in your control code could send 40kg of metal hurtling at your head. *8')

Mark and the rest of the Peopoly gang are absolutely doing things right. Not just from the awesome technological advancements that make this printer special, but primarily because of their dedication to user data privacy and open source design. You're right that hobbyists like myself probably can't justify the cost of the printer - if I'm saving up that much for a printer, it'd be an IDEX or toolchanger where I have true, reliable multi-material capabilities - but it's damn cool and I'm putting it on my mental wishlist of printers that can replace our broken POS Stacker3D printer at work. Installing lights would make for a great future video, too. I'd be curious if they would get installed in the vertical extrusions behind the Z-axis lead screws, on the toolhead, or somewhere else. Regardless, you never really can have too much light covering the print volume of your machine. Installing a Diamondback nozzle would of course be an excellent option; of particular interest there would be if the Magneto X's high print speeds and powerful part cooling capability can allow you to print with huge line widths and layer heights at high speed.

My first introduction to klipper was my SV06+ "poverty prusa" klipper screen add on, and I also found being able to adjust the bed heater PWM frequency was very useful when I discovered that the default frequency caused my LED printer light modifications to visually flicker every time the heater was modulating to maintain temperature. A better regulated power supply might not have been as susceptible, but this was a free fix 😊

The linear motor is cool, but I would like to see more tool-head changes, explorations of full-colour printing, SLS (as mentioned), etc. There is SO much more to printing than just speed, and it would be nice to see movement on other aspects that are neglected.

It's a very cool product and I also love their attitude towards software, privacy and ownership. Stark difference to the Bambu P1S I just got. At the price I might choose to build multiple Ratrig V-Cores instead of buying one of these. It's crazy cool that two of the axis are so encapsulated and should be very reliable? Are there any maintenance steps for the rails? Magnetism is absolutely mind boggling!

This printer is no surprise... commercial CNC machines have used this technology for years. It was only a matter of time before this became available for home units. This machine is on my hit list as a must have.

@@3DMusketeers Yes this is true, but thats only because companies like Bambu created a massive shift in what could or should go into machines to make them more accurate at much higher print speeds. This would have taken even longer if that initial massive step forward had not have happened, and we would still be printing at stupid slow speeds for years to come on our Prusa machines. But now the flood gates are opening and the trickle down effect will speed up expotentially. This though is a great step forward, eliminating belts and the inherant noise they create, no more belt tensioning or idol pulleys, which also means no failing bearings. Closed loop and 3 micron accuracy is also a massive step in the right direction for future printers, now we just need more manufactures to adopt it as well.

Great job,👍 Micheal over at teaching tech is also all over this and has pretty informative video he posted 2 weeks ago. He goe's into a lot more technical detail prolly why he is part of the field testing team and got his earlier. He has already helped the team to fix a major issue. Kamp is also some thing he talks about and worth a listen. Also gets a bit more technical and talks about the cool load cell. He also show a bunch of calibration prints a actual printed benchy and a very sexy printed vase that make this printer look some what very promising for now. Also showing some pretty good TPU printing as well. All in all he does a solid pre look at the printer with some really good talking points and a look inside klipper. He compare's build quality to an X1 but with open source if that's a thing. Well worth a watch if anyone's actually keen on this printer.

Pressure advance is a klipper setting parameter thing you gotta toggle should be a quick config change and a print for calibration, extruder looks pretty standard. Input shaper not working yet makes sense with the fancy motors though

Perhaps a silly question, but are the magnets user replaceable? should you in some way damage the magnets, say by getting the chamber too warm when you have it enclosed and that bed at 1000w?

They are not. But you also should not be in a position to damage the magnets either. The chamber wont get hot enough I dont think.

Your device would have to get very close to the magnets. The field strength falls off quite quickly (1 / distance squared). But better safe than sorry.

The wide print bed is typical for IDEX printers. Magnetic rails should be great for IDEX, and more tool heads, as they don't need additional belt paths, just somewhere to park the tools when not in use. I hope Peopoly is already thinking about multiple heads for this platform.

@@3DMusketeers I don't think that the complexity of a tool changer is needed, unless the number of tools gets high. All that is needed is to extend the x axis magnetic rail so that there's parking space for n-1 toolheads on each end of the rail. That would allow any tool to be accessed, by shuffling the others to the other end. You would also be able to print in parallel or mirror mode for with up to all the the tools so long as there's space to do so. The only downside would be the cost of the magnets to extend the rail, and you'd need a lot of motor drivers and hotend circuits, as each tool is effectively its own, fully independent motor (and needs a stepper for the extruder).

A similar drivetrain could run a type of scalar robotic arm and to regulate the gravity concerns of a printer of no frame size limitations, and could be telescopic, and also a bridgeable axis could also be a possibility, as if the lego block had magnetic properties or haptically could.

For a low weight gantry robot, which is effectively what this is, a motor on one end plus an idler on the other could perform better than a motor on each end of the gantry. The only risk of this is slack in the system developing over time, which can result in problems with unidirectional repeatability late in it's service interval cycle. In other words, if the X gantry ends up slewing, the end near the motor could move more than the end near the idler, so while the near position may still be accurate, the far end could vary by the amount of slew, depending on the size of the motion and the direction from which it was approached. In the worst case on small cyclic Y moves, the other end of the X gantry might not move at all. When I was working on a 2m square gantry robot, we had a different problem. With motors on both ends of the X gantry, motors could end up 'fighting' each other to correct for the resonance in the system. Whenever we added or removed load on the X gantry, the system could end up in a limit cycle (sometimes called resonance) when it was supposed to be still. A quick tap of the gantry would often jump it out of it's limit cycle, but the longer term solution was to either slightly detune the motor PIDs, or add weights to the gantry, both of which reduced performance.

After my experience with my last 400mm-class FDM printer, I swore off the format for awhile until I could get into something more commercial/industrial quality and capability; don't get me wrong, tuning up a printer can be fun, but not when you Really need it to work vs forever ordering parts for the next phase of perfection. That was 2018. I would strongly consider coming back for this one, and if you're in the market for a machine in this class, the price is a relative bargain. I'd definitely scoop up an enclosure though and look at hardened bits for abrasive printing.

That's why I spent extra time to outline all the phases of perfection for my new build and just went straight to the top and ordered everything 💀. I think the only thing more I can do with this printer is make it AWD corexy but I'd need to make two custom mounts. I actually received a request to print a decently big project and now I'm scrambling to get my printer together enough to start printing the parts though 😂

With a linear track, you wouldn't necessarily need a tool changer, just put all heads on the track and make the track long enough that there was somewhere for the heads to park when not in use. You could even print with multiple heads at once, if the appropriate support were added in the slicer.

I would like to see miniatures. Can it get down to 0.01mm layers with a 0.25mm nozzle and 0.15mm extrusion width on external perimeters.

I use 0.05mm layers with 0.15mm external perimeters on my prusa's and they make amazing miniatures, but if you are in to robots and vehicles, or anything angular, the edges get soft... ...but the main problem is when surfaces get close to tangent with the print plane. That ruins FDM for miniatures. otherwise, my FDM minis are close to SLA quality

I am SURE it CAN, but why? Get a resin printer for that. 0.25 nozzle and 0.01mm layers are asking for trouble. Remember, even resin printers use 0.05mm layers lol.

I would probobly have done the linjear rails the other way around. Those magnets are not cheap. They could have done the linear motor as a PCB and used Hallback array on the carriage

Could even use more advance magnet layout to increase the flux focus so the liniear motor could have less windings. Transrapid use that model and it only have one winning per magnet. Granted.. it use 8000A... on the other hand its 46 ton.. so a bit heavier.

@@drstefankrank actually I've seen a 240v ups setup. It requires 2 units. You hook them together. Each unit becomes one of the two live wires. But in this case it would be pulling half the power out of each UPS. It's not any different than pulling power for 2 devices on 2 outlets in the same circuit.

Well keep in mind, were looking for a company that is willing to simply provide the parts to our specifications... so we can build our own systems for our organization. And have the ability to create new printers that suit us. Which means to possibly provide a stock length of extrusions... where we can cut our own lengths. Provide software that is able to be adjusted to fit the sizes or setup we want, that is not closed in to the companies presets only. In other words... totally open source kits which allows us to customize our units to our specifications. We have a school that teaches students how to invent, how to design and build things. And part of that is to design our own tools. Its often where there are no off the shelf tools to fit our projects needs. And this is the first time I have seen a 3D printer with liner rails. Anyway, that is what I am talking about. Do you have any suggestions? We are not seeking already built printers. We are seeking Open Source Kits with this kind of quality parts where the parts companies are not afraid to assist DYI'ers to design and build their own printers. Do you have any suggestions besides open our check book, which is not really a satisfactory answer to tell someone?

The pure sass of taking every complaint people had about Bambulabs printers at the time and going "all of these things, our business model is to do the complete opposite of this" was hilarious when they launched. Having some of the same concerns youve had, I'm glad i held off on getting an X1C a year ago and waited until a company had 99% of the bells and whistles i was looking for wothout the BL/Creality IP and ither headaches. Really looking forward to mine arriving, I'm glad its mostly software stuff that can be updated amd the maybe hardware updates are user servicable as they've built it to be that from the start other than the motion system. Did some preliminary test splices with the conservative speeds in the nightly build and in the time it takes to print 4 of a thing i batch print a lot of, its showing 18 of them in almost exactly the same amount of time. I'm happy at that speed, if even higher speeds can still keep the same quality its gonna be freaking amazing. Very glad to hear that you can dial back the bed power in Klipper, i was having some concerns i might have to cancel my preorder because of the weird electrical situation i have at home. If it takes 15 minutes to heat up the build plate instead of 7, I'm fine with that because I'm saving a lot more time than that vs. my current machines. I'd like to see something on maintenance tips for this setup. There's a lot less than most other printers but there's some still with the Z and I'd imagine some specific to the motion system. I know there's an entry in the wiki, but it'd be nice to see the main things to pay attention to from someone who runs printers in production a lot.

I do not expect the motion system to have many user serviceable parts, but it also has no moving parts, so I cannot see many issues with WHY you would need to do it, you know? My build plate can go from ambient (20 ish) to 60C in under 3 minutes at 75% power.

You need a dry room, or at least install the enclosure to allow you to burn moisture out of the build zone. I have a decades old heat gun from Grainer that I use to preheat the air inside my Printed Solid enclosure before a print session.

Their machines were not reliable for me. 2 lemons in a row.. and between that and their data policies, I won't ever recommend their products unless they fix those issues. In a conventional 3D printer, rotary motors are used to move the axes, and they do have torque - because they are rotating, and applying twisting force to the pulley, leadscrew, or ballscrew (depending on the specific component in question). But, because there's no twisting involved with the linear motors, there's no torque. In this case, it's linear force that the linear motors are generating - and in general usage, the term "linear" is omitted and it's just called force. Force is a basic unit, so it's units of measure in the Imperial system (i.e, English units) are Pounds, Ounces (1/16th of a Pound), or (if the metric system is being used) Newtons (which is 0.10197 Kilograms). The units of measure for torque that are commonly used for stepper motors are Ounce-Inches, which is an ounce of force acting at a radius of one inch. In metric units, Newton-Centimeters are used, which likewise, is a Newton of force acting at a radius of one Centimeter. Inertia is the resistance of an object to acceleration, and is proportional to its mass. It's why an object does not go flying off at infinite speed when touched by another object (even something as small as a single electron). The more mass an object has, the more inertia it has, and the more force it takes to make it accelerate at any given rate.

Typical wall outlet 15 amps, if old, might trip at around 1500-1800 watts.... good condition ones maybe more, not much. 20 amps can run around 3000-3800 watts if you're lucky, brand new. You can run several printers on a single breaker, if they're i3 /mk3s (i4 etc). A few BL X1Cs etc. 1000 watts just for the bed? You can run MAYBE 2 of those on a 20 amp breaker / outlet. I had to install a sub panel with extra breakers so I could run my handful of printers + pcs + power tools.... expect to dedicate an entire room's power just to this printer with lights and a laptop, rpis etc. Thank you for the pre-production review. Can't wait to see the production state.

at full tilt its about 1200 watts heating and around 300 when printing. 3X that of an MK3 on printing and 5x on heating from our testing. Thankfully you can turn the pwn cycle down and not care
