And thats one of the major differences between him and Ronaldo. At this age Ronaldo can be a liability. Slow the game down. If he's not scoring he holds the team back. While Messi at this age can sit back and pull the strings, have play go through him and still be the main focal point in attack without scoring. That's the difference. That's the levels. Ronaldo fanboys don't see that.

Same here. The first time I saw Messi was on TV in 2005 when he played in the youth World Cup. From the very first moment he had the ball he already looked special. I began watching his games and witness his career unfold over the years. In 2014 I felt bad for him and his team after Argentina lost in the final and he received so much criticism as a result of it, especially when he said he would retire from international competitions. Watching him last week cheer with his teammates as they won the World Cup made me emotional and tear up. It is a perfect outcome to his career.

What swings it for me is that Messi is the mostall-round player I've ever seen. His passing range and ability is as good as Zidane or Xavi. His finishing as good as Pele. His dribbling as good as Maradona. His first touch is as good at Cruyff's. He's every GOAT rolled into one absolute monster player.
@fpsqt
@fpsqt Жыл бұрын
Uh ... No. The most all-around player in history is Pelé. He had a score of 9/10, at least, in EVERY. SINGLE. ASPECT. Of the game: - Finishing from BOTH feet (I repeat, BOTH) from inside the box - Finishing from BOTH feet from outside the box - Headers ( supernatural impulsion ) - Speed ( Could run 100m in less than 11s ) - Assists - Driblling - Inventing moves that inspired others to copy and perfect it ( Still no one attempted to do one-twos with opponents legs though ) - Free Kicks - Ball domination, especially with his chest - Robustness (the man was built like a tank) - Goal scoring ( best goal participation average per official game played BY FAR, 1.41 vs 1.25 from Messi ) In ALL aspects above, Pelé got a 9/10 score, minimum. I reckon Messi can receive a 10 regarding finishing with his LEFT foot and dribbling, and maybe a 9 in assists and free kicks, but the other aspects he's like a 6 or 7. He can't do headers, he's not particulary robust (he's frail, of course that doesn't impact much on his play because nowadays players are waaaay more protected from murderous tackles than in the 60s), he didn't WOW the world with inventing new moves like Pelé did ... Messi is an amazing player, the best I've seen in my 46 years of age, but he's SPECIALIZED in a few areas of the game. NOT an overall guy, not by any means.

The stats speak for themselves. People often make the argument that the days of Pelé and Maradona were physically a bigger challenge, but I’d argue the mental challenge in this era of social media should be accounted as well. Messi was critiqued heavily (even by his own country man) and other media that he was not the man to lead Argentina to international trophies. The amount of pressure was monumental. To retire in 2016 from international football , come back and then win 3 international trophies including the most prestigious one the World Cup is simply unmatched in football history. To complete the game of football with these accolades you can not conclude anything other that Messi is indeed the greatest footballer of all time. Edit: Pelé is an iconic player, who set the standard for future evolution. However the World Cups he participated in and won in 1958, 1962 and 1970 only had a format of 16 competing teams. It wasn’t until the World Cup in 1982 in Spain that the format was changed to 24 teams. Not taking anything away from his achievements, but you could find a point of ‘critique’ in any era.

The moment i've been waiting for. Since i know him since World Cup 2010, i admire Messi as Magician in Football and im right. Before lift that World Cup, Messi has suffered a lot while in Argentina uniform. Starting from the 2014 World Cup Final defeat to Germany. Then it was followed by losing to Chile in the 2015 and 2016 Copa America. At that time he wanted to retire from the Argentina national team, but I always believed he would come back. After returning, he again tasted the bitterness of the 2018 World Cup defeat to France (Because France was in extraordinary performance at that time) and the subsequent defeat at the 2019 Copa America against Brazil. And finally, since Lionel Scaloni managed the team, Argentina managed to prove to the world once again. That they are the best team in the world. By winning the 2021 Copa America Trophy for the victory against Brazil and the 2022 Finalissima over Italy. And that beautiful story ended when they won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. And with that, the best fairy tale in football history is done. You need to have watched Messi play for some years to realise he is a phenomenon. What's most enjoyable, is that despite the unbelievable ability, it didn't give him a cheat code to just walk through it, he always had to play his game to achieve his outcome. He knows every corner of football, both the physics and the mental, and he incorporated that into his chess like strategy when playing. He is a man without doubts of his control and precision, his only remaining task was how to be in the position to unleash it. It's like a magnetic force toward the goal, it's incredibly difficult to stop it. And if you don't understand that he is born god tier, then watch him play as a tiny little kid. It's the same player.

I'm 50 and have been in the Maradona camp for a long time, I recall the 86 WC, the Napoli titles. But now I have to concede Messi has become the player Maradona was, a true number 10 that can own and win a game at international level. At Barcelona Messi was the cutting edge that consistently put the ball in the back of the net, without Iniesta and Xavi at International level he was not as effective. In Qatar 2022 he shifted his game subtly from a false 9 to a true 10, in the mould of Platini, Zidane, Maradona and it worked. Maradona had more personal challenges and burned very bright between 1985-89, but lets not forget Maradona also featured in 4 World Cups, 82,86,90,94 and should have been selected in 78' when he was the best young player in Argentina, so he did have longevity, he was just not supported by the sports science and discipline demanded of footballers today. I think thats where the difference lies, Maradona had an uncanny natural talent with the ball, outspoken, unpredictable, a leader but lacked the patient, disciplined, stoic calm which surrounds Messi. Out of the two, Maradona just edges it with his natural ability and leadership but I feel Messi has the advantage on total focus & discipline probably helped with a stable family life, which enabled him to win a WC when most players are retiring. Leadership has come to Messi at a later age through experience & achievements and is the main reason he lifted the WC at 35 not 31 or 27. Maradona was born with a leader which is why he lifted the WC at age 26.

Pep understands the nuance in attempting to answer this question. Much like Jordan/LeBron I always feel the best answer (such as it is) is along the lines of “he might be the best player ever but it’s an unanswerable question and you can spin it different ways depending on your personal preferences, what you value more, etc.” Doesn’t mean it’s not an interesting question though! (Always!) 🙏🏾

Personally Jordan is the goat. I only actually started watching basketball last year, so my opinion is most definitely skewed, but from my understanding Jordan is the goat. Definition of greatness in a person: Greatness is a concept of a state of superiority affecting a person or object in a particular place or area. Greatness can also be attributed to individuals who possess a natural ability to be better than all others. Personally, I feel that Jordan is the goat, because unlike Jordan, LeBron isn't the undisputed goat of his era. Sure, it's widely agreed LeBron is the best of his era. Even I believe that. However there are a select group of people, casuals who have only started watching basketball this year, who have argued that Steph is the goat of the LeBron/Steph era. However MJ is the undisputed goat of his era, no one can touch him, and everybody would agree. MJ played in arguably the most star-studded era too, most of the HOFers are from MJ's era. How about that for superiority? Additionally, I think we can all agree that MJ didn't work as hard as LeBron to get to where he is. Yeah, MJ is an athlete, and it takes an immense level of dedication to be the best in your field, however it can be argued that MJ is more physically gifted than LeBron. MJ had a higher vert, was faster, and was relatively strong for his frame. MJ partied, smoked, drank, and yet he still dominated in the most physically demanding era. How about that for being naturally better than others? MJ was also more influential on the court . MJ averaged 30 in an era that prioritised defence. An era with the three point like being less prominent. An era that wasn't that prolific scoring wise. He scored a higher percentage of points for his team in his prime than LeBron has in his respective prime. MJ has a better scoring average, and his points mattered more. MJ was also amazing defensively, hell he won dpoty in an era that prioritised defence. Doesn't that speak volumes on how great he was? Superiority at its finest. MJ had a better prime. MJ had a better individual prime than LeBron. In MJ's individual prime, he averaged 35.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists. Jordan won the dunk contest, all star MVP, scoring title, steals title, dpoty title, and most importantly, a regular season MVP. In the post season, despite losing to the pistons, MJ was the best player of the series, averaging 38 points, 7.8 assists, and 6.2 rebounds. Losing to the second best team in rhe post season isn't something to be ashamed of. LeBron's best individual season was in 2007,when LeBron averaged 30, 7.9 rebounds and 7.2 assists. Statistically inferior to MJ's imo. LeBron didn't win an MVP, dpoty, or a scoring title, but he did drag a god awful Cavs team to the finals , so he deserved some props for that. MJ also had a better prime regarding team success, considering how his team won the best winning record of all time, at that time. MJ also three peated twice, so it's apparent whose team was more dominant. MJ is also more influential off the court as of right now. His shoe line is more successful and influential, and well he owns 90 percent of an NBA team, so he's still influencing the league through the hornets even though he isn't playing. You could also argue that MJ is more popular as an individual. Even though MJ doesn't use social media, his name is arguably still more well known than LeBron's, which is insane. Personally, before I got into basketball, I didn't know who LeBron, or Steph was. I only knew of Steph, Kobe and Jordan. This doesn't influence anything, as it's an objective take, but I feel that I just had to put it out there. I welcome any arguments or debates. Please be kind and don't go straight to insulting me though. Thanks
@Enthusiast230
@Enthusiast230 Жыл бұрын
The only argument LeBron has is longevity and versatility. The versatility argument is stupid , as if versatility was truly that important in deciding who's the better player, Westbrook and Simmons are better than Steph. Longevity wise, while LeBron has more seasons in the NBA, MJ retired at 40. If LeBron is able to play at a high level when he's older than 40, then we can have something to talk about.

They don't show the things he does every game like; first touches, superhuman vision, the dribbling away from 4 players at once, creating passing lanes that don't exist, putting the perfect weight on the pass for his teammates - every time, the amount of magical things he has done which ended in him narrowly missing / hitting post or his teammate missing. But above all is his consistency. He has played at godlike level for 2 decades and when you watch him it looks as natural to him as breathing. I have had so many joyous moments from watching him and I'm lucky to have been able to witness his career live. It will be a sad day when he retires but he still has a few more years in him yet!

I have just re-watched out of interest, the 1986 WC final that Argentina won 3-2 against W Germany. Maradona had a very good game. He didn’t score and made one of the 3 Argentine goals . Overall he played very well. He did very well in that tournament overall and won player of the tournament. Messi made a much more telling contribution I would suggest in the 2022 final. In 1986 Maradona was 25 years of age, in 2022, Messi, 35. That makes a huge difference. If there is any sense in GOAT arguments, you don’t base that on one game or one season but careers. Maradona was amazing but just watch some of the tapes of Messi between the ages of 18 and 31. There has never in my view been anyone that good for that long. And yes I’m old enough to have watched Pele, (2nd best of all time imo) and watched him throughout without rose tinted spectacles. Brilliant too but not as consistent at the highest possible club level. The notion that you have to win a World Cup to be in the running for this is a strange criteria. George Best was definitely in my top 6 of all time but could never possibly have won a World Cup given he was from Norther Ireland.
@ksasidhar
@ksasidhar Жыл бұрын
Did you observe in your re-watched game that Maradona was defended by Lothar Matthäus in that game who by himself can be considered one of the best in the world for his defense. Who defended Messi in WC 22? While I agree with the consistency part, did you remember the kind of tackling Maradona was subjected to during his playing time? And do you remember that a team almost relegated from Serie A won the cup because of him. Now compare the supporting cast of Maradona with Messi and the kind of fouls which were allowed back then.
@canderson1955
@canderson1955 Жыл бұрын
@@ksasidhar you make a good point on the issue of the tackles that were allowed in 1985 compared to now. It was even worse in Pele's day. In regards to Mattheus though, Messi has played aganst virtually everty top defender in the world in his 19 year career and left all of them in awe of his ability. He would have done the same with Matthaus I am sure.

@@canderson1955 My question was about which top defender marked Messi in this world cup as you had pointed out one world Cup finals as an example? If we have to generalize, what happened to Messi in the 2014 world cup. I remember it enough to say that he was average at best in that game. Nothing against Messi, and I haven't watched Pele sufficient enough to talk about him, but what Maradona did in his peak years and how he brought a cup to Napoli and the world cup to Argentina is nothing but spectacular. I don't think anyone has or can emulate it.

His statistics and accolades are outstanding and he definitely deserves it to be in a conversation of the best ever player. On his day he has been the best player in the planet! However I do believe achieving in many ways is easier. Players like Pele didn’t exist in an era where diving was as common as it is now. I’m a little more partial towards players who were at top of their game in eras where integrity was a thing.
