I would advise everyone who's used to picking peppers like jalapenos early to set aside just one plant and let the fruit ripen all the way up. See if it tastes better or worse to you. The flavor is very different, usually with little to none of that "green" bitterness, somewhat more heat and a good deal more sweetness and nice pepper taste. You may decide the smaller overall yield is well worth the wait for tastier peppers. I don't care much for green jalapenos or serranos, but I really enjoy them red. If I want higher yields I just grow more plants.

I've used the upside-down bucket trick quite often on my younger (or shorter) pepper plants. Particularly when there is going to be an overnight storm. I like to put a brick on top of the bucket to keep it from blowing away. The next morning I remove the bucket and I like to think that the plant is saying, "Ahhh! Good morning! Thanks for the assist last night!"

Thanks for another super informative video. I live in Japan and the summer temperature here is super high, which I previously thought was ideal for peppers. However, seeing that most of my plants have died, or are dying while being in direct sunlight/heat, I will definitely start using shade cloths, for the remaining ones. The watering part is something I need to work on as well. Thanks again.

Grow shades and saucers/water spikes. Keep them away from direct desert sunlight (they only need 10-20% UV and keep the soil moist. Both items help with this. Partial burying the bag in native soil has been helpful for me as well, but it's labor intensive.

Peppers doing well with one exception. Last year we planted a poblano plant and got ONE pepper. This year the same with a new plant. Foliage is beautiful and green but after the one pepper no flowers or peppers.
@PepperGeek
@PepperGeek 2 жыл бұрын
Hm, are the plants large? Sometimes a small pepper will steal away all the energy of a small pepper plant, forcing it to focus on growing the pepper and not growing larger/more foliage. Early in the season we recommend picking off those early peppers and letting the plant get big and tall/bushy. Then let the flowers come and set fruit. Sometimes low humidity and/or high heat can lead to flower drop too.

@@PepperGeek kinda screwed up with pepper plants this year though. Thought I could just put them out there as seed into ground but it never got that hot to germinate the seeds but now they are growing about 12 inches high but starting them inside as seed I should have done. Learning curve third year growing and first year growing in ground use to grow in pot planters cause I hate pulling weeds lol easier to go thru pots instead of ground where everything grows lol. Being a gardener for the past few years is a learning experience I'm glad I have these fails though because it teaches me what to do next year but I lazily and stupidly didn't do it with the seed inside first like an idiot but I have other things growing like tomatoes lettuce turnips garlic that's doing good

I've read peppers would rather be underwater than overwatered. I water once about every 5 days in 11 litre pots ,and as you say less Nitrogen in middle to later plant life and more Phosphorous and pottasium,I also find misting 3 times daily and hand pollinating has eliminated flower drop, misting also makes stigma sticky and more accepting of pollen grain,I also give occasional boiled egg water feed for calcium and I have virtually no flower drop any way must be doing something right, love your videos keep up good work👍👍😄😄

It might be lack of nutrients, I wouldn’t prune any, just feed a balanced fertilizer to help the plant fill out. It could also be pests. Aphids and thrips tend to feed on the new, active growth (the upper leaves) first. Check for pests!

Hm. That is a tough one. I would maybe try giving them a feeding of liquid fertilizer to see if that improves growth. Wait 1-2 weeks after fertilizing to see if that is the cause. Wow I just found your channel. Great information. I am having trouble with blossom end rot. Here in Texas we have been over 100 most days since early May. We have lots of wind and very low humidity. I grow in 5 gallon buckets with drainage holes in the bottom and around the sides. I water when the top 2” of soil is dry, which means I water just about everyday. I use 40% shade cloth. I open it in the morning and close it between 12 and 2 depending on how hot it gets. Blossom end rot has shown up mostly on my jalapeños and sweet purple peppers. The sweet banana peppers have not had any trouble. Do you have any suggestions for managing blossom end rot? Thank-you, and I love your channel. I will be buying your book.
@PepperGeek
@PepperGeek Жыл бұрын
It usually comes down to watering if you're sure it is blossom end rot. Keep it consistent and try not to let the plants get to the point where they are drooping badly. It could also be sun scald. This will usually start out grayish on the fruits, softening the peppers where they are affected. This usually happens late in the day when the sun is lower in the sky and can directly hit the hanging pods. We have had several of our jalapeños succumb to it this year!
@CH-iy4go
@CH-iy4go Жыл бұрын
@@PepperGeek thank-you for your reply. I called it blossom end rot because I saw one of your other videos and my peppers looked just like the examples you showed of blossom end rot. I am new to hardening here in Texas trying to figure out the extreme heat, wind, and extremely low humidity. I think I will use the shade cloth earlier in the day on the peppers. I water just about every day because of all the factors I just mentioned, so maybe even with drainage holes the bottom of the bucket is too wet while the top half gets too dry. I think there is a fine line with the harsh conditions. Frankly, I am happy to have a producing garden at all. Most locals have lost there entire garden this year. Thanks again

I'll second that. Also, the large number of blooms may point to high heat or poor pollination. In rare cases, some plants may be sterile (flowers produce no pollen), but usually only with experimental new crosses.

I have a Carolina reaper plant that germinated around February and it’s about 4 feet tall but hasent made a pepper yet, any ideas?

I'd say so far you're doing a great job with getting it so big! So my first question is: do you feed it any liquid fertilizer? Watch out for fertilizers that have a lot of nitrogen (NPK Ratio). Try upping the P and K a little bit.

Definitely sounds like too much nitrogen. Watch the NPK ratio of fertilizer you're giving it, make sure you're giving something where the P is higher than the N. Seabird guano would be a good option considering how well it's doing otherwise.

@@acee3390 Oh yeah sure that sounds good. Tbh don't stress too much about the ratio. You should be quite lucky to have such large plants. I reckon you use 5 or 10 gallon pots?

I have a Carolina Reaper that is every bit of three and a half foot tall and very healthy. It is covered in flowers but the flowers never produce peppers. Not even one. I treat and fertilize this plant the same as I do the other 20 plants I have but I have not gotten one pepper off of this plant. I have even tried to hand pollinate but no pollen never comes out the flowers. What could this be?

You're not the first to have this issue, specifically with reapers. *Where did you get your seeds?* Sometimes, accidental crossed seeds can produce infertile/sterile plants (where the flowers will not produce pollen). Check to see if the flowers have any pollen grains falling out while they're fully open. If not, and the anthers are totally free of pollen, this could be it. If other peppers are producing nearby, this is all I can think of as a cause..

@@PepperGeek for this particular plant I just purchased a fully grown plant from the store. But I imagine e that could be it. I never see pollen fall when I try to hand pollinate, which is what I do with my indoor Buquinho. Oh well. I suppose If that is the case I will toss this one out. I did move it to a shadier area to see if it was the very hot south Louisiana Heat. I will give it a few more weeks to see if that is it and if it still doesn't produce I don't see a point in keeping it. Thank you so much I appreciate all y'all do for the pepper community. Have a blessed day

I really like your content but that microphone is honestly a nuisance in videos. The constant reflections are super distracting and it just looks rather clunky and weird.
