A quite original writing, which avoids ultramodernism (in 1954, Xenakis did not begin his first stochastic works for strings, but the influence of the so-called 'Darmstadt school' was at its top) and can be herd as quasi tonal, or better, 'nostalgic of tonality). For such composers at that time, in their string music, it was hard to avoid Bartok's influence (quartets, Music for strings ....), but this is not perceptible here. The notion of 'Metamorphoses' is not clearly perceptible. Through this title in Italian, tha author seems to challenge the old Richard Strauss, whose Metamorhoses (on a theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Third symphony) ae re also written for strings, in q quite darker mood.

I have yet to listen to Norgaard and not be reminded of Shostakovich. Yes there are elements of modernism not present in Shosti, but it reminds of Shosti thru and thru.

Gorgeous music but far too traditional to warrant repeated listenings?
