Per Nilsson goes MMMM at the Freak Guitar Camp 2020

I've loved the song "Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm" ever since I first heard it back in late 1993, it's just a wonderful song with absolutely gorgeous chord progressions. At last year's Freak Guitar Camp (hosted by the marvelous Mattias IA Eklundh) I decided to whip this old tune out and give it an ol' spank in front of the unsuspecting guitar campers. Good clean fun!

The hand is like Holdsworth, but the sound is unmistakably Nilsson. Jesus, if this is what he can do off the top of his head, what gems that he's labored over must be hidden on his hard drive at home? I can only hope we hear them some day.

Hey Per, can you help a cluesless guy to understand what type of scale or intervalls you play to get these "outthere" tones. i mean the real spicey ones that make it sound like holdsworth lol. Is it some mixolydian altered mode? i realize you probably don't stick to one particular scale but maybe there is a base scale from which you go in and out of?

I don't think I'm playing very "out there" in this video, it's mostly very diatonic ("sticking to the scale"). I do sometimes use a fair bit of chromatic concepts in other contexts though, alternative scales, multitonic systems and so on, maybe I should make a video about that at some point

@@ScarGuitar thanks for the reply and yeh, that would be a great video to watch indeed. If you say you stick to the scale in this example, what scale or better said what mode would it be? I can hear that it's not purely major, maybe mixolydian or something along those lines?

They way I sort of think when I play over this is G natural minor for the first two bars, then Ab lydian for the next two bars, repeat this for the next four bars, then the rest is F dorian before the whole progression starts over in G minor again
