Fred which baitcast setup you use for topwater ?

@@AMIIIIRO I was using 2 differents combo Gunki chooten C220MH and Chooten C 213H combine with Gunki BC200HG Because I was fishing with a fly fisherman on the back I have chose a bit longer rods over 210 cm to fish more far in front. Castability over precision! And because we target big fish in heavy cover I have chose powerfull rods to better control the fight and extract them fast form the jungle.

yes I understand that you rather be happy with fishporn and frankly we would like to cath those big ones that we hunt for. Of course we could have played safe (or not) and stayed in Sweden. But this river can deliver big fish, very big fish and specialy on top water. And we've experienced what anyone experience in fishing, even on the best spot of the planet waters condition and the fish dictate their rules. You need to stay focus and open minded to take any oportunity when they will come. We select destinations month before the shooting and prepare them carefully. Once we make a choice we kind of need to stick to it. And I hope that even if we fail to hook those big ones you still enjoy the show. And remember : If fishing was easy it will be called trolling !

I’m actually a big fan of your work and I was really disappointed last year when you missed the higher step of the podium by one point. The fact is, I just find this choice really ballsy and by not understanding I’m only saying that I don’t know if I would do the same myself. Nothing else. I am a french river fisherman myself, hunting for perch and I know that these environments can deliver really big fishes, simply, in a competition where the opponents have a whole lot of choice of area, it is a really surprising choice. I am really glad to see the french river system represented by the way.

Of course it is easy to say that because I am not a fishermen of this level, but I don't understand the obstination of such a good fly guy as Niklaus to stay on poppers when it don't works. I will probably have try much faster divers. Sometimes when perch don't want to take on surface, the diver is the solution (I have had the case in a river, switching a popper to a diver because I have had a big follower and a 45 cm bite the diver as hard as it was difficult to release the fly. There are a lot of other techniques possible, two streamers quickly animated, big sub surface streamers and of course the strategy of streamer and indicator when it is very difficult (see the article of Bernd Ziesche on the way to catch zander and big perch with streamers and indicators). I knows that the conditions were extremely difficult (hot hot hot) but I don't understand his obstination. Indeed I admire you very much.

We got only a few days of training with Niklaus before getting into the competition. And believe me he has try a lots of differents patern. We have witness some very strange reactions to some fly/animation and little by little reduced the choices according to our results. The editing of the video also do not show all the attempt we did with differents technics or type of fly. As for indicators or using 2 streamers, it's forbiden by the rules.

It's a pity for the rules because they authorised triple hooks on lures (what are considerably more destructive) and not 2 flies (what are not forbidden in the fly world championship where a lot of angler fish with two or three nymphs) or indicators, strange but rules are rules. Ce n'est pas uniquement la raison, les conditions météo ont joués un grand rôle aussi. Et regarde bien comment d'autres équipes galèrent sur des biotopes moins pêchés .
