I've been making no. 10 caps since the early 80's. My process has evolved over the years. I had tooling made at various machine shops. A brass plate milled to hold 1,000, a steel plate with top punch plate that fits my 20 ton press. My mixture is made in bulk and kept wet with denatured alcohol. Rubbed over the plate into the cap body. Another plate presses the mixture into the cup. Another pushes them out. I make my own black powder as well, using my grandpa's recipe.

I live in the UK where the cap situation has been dire for over a year. I grab whatever my local gun shop can lay their hands on. Remington No 10 fit and work perfectly on my Uberti Remington .36 and .44 revolvers. Unfortunately No10s have been pretty much unobtainium for ages but I managed to find some No11s recently and grabbed 8 tins. They're a little on the loose side but fit okay with a pinch. I've used RWS 1075, they're okay with a pinch for the first cylinder until they're fouled. CCI No10 - too tight, 2 hammer strikes required to fire. CCI No 11 - too loose. I've to be desperate to buy CCI due to many misfires as three friends who use them will testify. I attribute this to the priming compound attracting moisture from the air more than the other makes. To combat this I make sure not to leave the tin or star dispenser exposed to the air between reloads. What happens is the hammer falls, the cap doesn't go off, leaving compound stuck to the surface and inside the nipple hole. Replacing with a new cap doesn't work unless the dud compound is cleaned off and the nipple poked out. This problem never occurs with Remington and RWS caps. Fortunately I have a 357, .44 and a .45/70 lever action rifle to fall back on when caps aren't available... that's when I can find cartridge primers to reload of course !!! 😂

It's a shame there is a $25 to $30 hazmat fee on top of shipping for one $12 tin. I would have to order 15 to 20 tins to get the unit cost lower - at the expense of immediate cash in hand.

I was just having this discussion with an employee at my local gunshop, how you can buy a cap and ball about anywhere, almost every store that sells guns has those cheap traditions pistols for sale, but none of them sell the caps. So you can buy the gun with everything you need, except powder or caps, but none of them sell caps. You can buy them online, but it's only worth them by the case because you need to pay the hazardous materials charge. Going to start badgering shops to get some in I guess.

I was making caps by drilling holes in hard wood cap size using a screw driver I cut to make the aluminum disc into caps. I was using strike on the box matches and the striker dust off the match box and alcohol then hair spray. I've since picked up a kit from 22 cal loading kid guy. That is much easier and faster. I made up 300 for range use to save back the 600 or so Remington No.10's I have left. I rarly have a misfire and are the only caps that will fire my 1858 Uberti Remington.

I'm one that basically gave up and sold my pistols (3) but I kept one, just in case. An 1858 Remington, replica, my favorite, just could not sell that one. It's a 36 cal. but I bought the conversion so I load centerfire 38spl. However when the primers got so bad for everyone, I switched over to the PCP air rifles. Now I no longer have a primer problem. Got so fed up with all the price gouging at gun shows and businesses. Anyway, now days, air rifles are not toys anymore, you can so some serious hunter with them. However, nothing can match the drama and excitement of black powder! Why I'm watching your video, when I see something about black powder, I still have to stop what I'm doing and watch it. It was my black powder guns that taught me and led to my reloading centerfire. The youth today don't seem to be interested in the things of the past, like civil war museums etc. I think the one near Dallas Texas just closed, saw that on facebook. How sad is that! Anyway, I liked your video. Thanks!

Spot on Jay, another issue as well is when they release the CCI 11s the entire country will be looking they need to do a quality run. There will be caps available for a few weeks at the most. I hope guys just buy what they need to shoot and don't hoard. I've spoken to a few new cap and ball shooters and the cap shortage is starting to hurt the hobby with new interest. Why buy a cap and ball revolver you can't shoot?

@Cap & Ball Fanatic, Years ago i had a tin of CCI #10s small like yours. I was able to use them easily after i took a small pointed wire cutter ( looks like plier but, two edges and pointed no strippers) and made 2 cuts. Both cuts are made 180 degrees from each other on the inside of the cup (it don't have to be perfect). When i make these cuts i cut them only half way of the total length of the cap's cup. You can use your fingers to push them on. This makes the cup split slightly and go on further on the nipples. Pros: 1) You can use up caps that are to tight. Cons: 1) Wcause

Hello...I am Irish but live in Czech Republic fpr 9 years....ive been shooting muzzle loaders for plinking and hunting. Purchased an old cap making tool here and never looked back. I wet paper caps for kids toy guns, strip the paper in two and use 8 if the cap dot powder into each cap....tamp it down wet and let them dry....some of the glue seems to be dissolved into the powder so no need to seal them. Had the odd fail but most work perfectly. I have a problem with wild boar on my land damaging stuff. Been watching your channel for hints and tips. I've a flint lock rifle too, never shot it. Would be interested in a video about how to use one. God bless you....

Back when I started shooting cap and ball there was only 3 manufacturers of caps CCI, RWS, and highly corrosive Italian imports under the likes of CVA brands etc. I always used CCI 11 on my rifles and revolvers by pinching them when necessary. I did like RWS 1075's though. When Remington started making caps I swapped to Remington 10's for my revolvers, but I always thought they were made by RWS for Remington due to the same type priming compound, but never verified that so I have no idea. At some point CVA started having CCI's packaged under their name and sometimes they could be found at great discounts. I bought a few cases of CCI # 10's right before the prices got insane 3 or so years ago for $27.40 a thousand and I still have plenty left so I ordered new nipples for my most liked revolvers and simply turned them down to use the CCI 10's. I've been shooting these guns for decades and to date I have never paid over 29 bucks per thousand and thought that was pretty high! hazmat used to be 3 dollars as well...times have changed... When I run out of caps I may resort to flintlock only to prevent having to pay these high prices of the day! It burns me up having to buy metallic primers, but I have no choice there and ain't willing to give up reloading and handloading! anyway if the caps don't fit...pinch them...if they're too tight chuck up the nipples and turn them down! :)

@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb Do you remember the original tap-o-cap from forster? I bought that tool many years ago and it had much longer and sharper teeth than the copy available today and it turned out a decent cap if you didn't break any teeth! I bought the copy of it like you have, but I bought my copy in #11 instead of #10 anyway I was wondering if you knew which one made the size closest to the original forster? I'm glad to see some of the things coming back to market like the slix shot nipples... those were originally MSM spitfire mag and also under the Uncle Mike's trademark as hotshot nipples. Man I sure do miss MSM and a couple others as well.

@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb I think I'll hold off on getting the number 10 die then. I only tinker with those anyway and I'm thousands of caps away from resorting to it! the priming compound is corrosive like the old Italian stuff, but the Italian compound was a dark silvery, brittle compound. Yeah I hate to see something useful leave the market, but luckily others come along and offer it down the road. Still I miss the old companies and those that ran them that have gone on to greener pastures...

Firstly I do not dislike where I live, but the area I live in is challenged we have no muzzleloader club our choices of gun stores are very limited,(one or 2 in 50 miles) the biggest interest in our gun community is modern guns. The most that you hear about muzzleloaders is during deer season and those will be in lines. So for a lowly cap and ball shooter there are not many resources. However we do have the nicest shooting range in a 250 mile radius, only paper no steel, but a large well built well attended rifle, pistol, and shotgun range. So it is not all bad but buying local is not an option most of the time. As a matter of fact the gun store closest to me hit me up for caps when they got in a revolver to sell😂 Thanks for your videos.

The shortage is artificially manufactured due to the nature of black powder firearms and how easy they are to obtain. They not only skirt around modern Federal and State firearm laws, they also circumvent many of the other "manmade" problem with other firearms. You can keep a black powder firearm shooting for much longer with little to no supplies. You can cast your own projectiles out of scrap lead stick on wheel weights, battery terminals, old junk fishing lures and sinkers, lead roof flashing and lead pipe etc etc. You can make and charge your own caps from raw materials. You can make your own black powder with relatively easy to obtain or get raw materials. Long story short you have many advantages over a modern shooter with a polymer frame striker fired 9mm smokeless centerfire pistol. He can barely fieldstrip and clean it, much less reload for it or make his own supplies or parts. If you do the math in your head it's easy to see what is going on currently. Save the fact that nearly anyone can walk into any store and walk out with nothing but a handshake and receipt after handing over the money. They aren't stupid and know they will become the go-to weapons of choice during Doomsday or end of the world type survival situations. I've always looked at it as a good way to layer yourself much in the same way of having archery equipment in addition to your firearms. You build enough layers, nobody will be able to shut you down or stop you regardless of how they try or approach it.

0.005 copper sheeting, ducco cement 1x 4 mixture onxy acetone remover from wally world, three red strip roll caps as shown on Hoffman Reproductions, if you know how to make powder and run ball from wheel weights at the tire shop, and find flint along the railroad tracks, it is very hard to be disarmed by events such as the collapse of our country, but the most important thing is training the next generation with these skills, because they will need it. No one had to train the boys that left bloody footprints in the snow from barefoot and frostbit Patriots on the road to Valley Forge about making do or conserving resources, that is our real weapon. Remember Rocky did not win every round but he got off the mat before the ref counted to ten, only you determine when it is over, and I like to think that still men are born that if not permitted to live free will show evil how hard a freeman dies.

Slix shot nipples I found may be a little long on pietta revolvers but I had no problem using them on my Uberties. They are too long so they either swosh out from being hammered or the cylinder won’t turn with the caps on. There’s a disclaimer on the packing that states they may not fit all revovers. They don’t work on my 44Sherrif model

True story the first pietta I purchased a year or so back was a 44 sheriffs model it’s short. I’ve used slix shoot nipples in all mu uberties which I own several. They work as advertised . When I installed them on the sheriffs model they were too long I didn’t realize it until I went to fire the revolver. I had to coax each primary to rotate the cylinder to fire it. Then after firing it i could not get the caps back on the ninples lol! I ended up putting the old nipples back in with no futher problem. I was going to send them back but it says in black and white may not fit all configurations. Oh well I’m just happy it shoots okay

The cheapest way to shoot BP percussion is just to say, "bang," while dry firing, LOL. Of course, flinters don't have the cap problem. Suggested dialogue: "Oh, so you have only six months to live. Too bad. BTW, can I have your caps when you're gone?" LOL.

I stumbled across a sporting good store that had a long forgotten stash of # 11 CCI caps . Maybe 18 cartons of 10 tins each. I’ve bought 2 cartons so far. I bought a couple of sets of #11 nipples and I’m good to go. Ok-$11.95 per , but I was happy to shovel out the cash. This is in April 2024 , the last #10s I found was in May,2023. The odd thing was the manager knows how scarce caps are and didn’t seem to mind hanging on to what seems to be dead inventory.

Jay some of the older Pietta revolvers from the 1970's, to 1990's use CCI #10 caps, as do some of the old CVA percussion rifles. But the CCI #10's I had, was per-pandemic production caps that I got back in the 1990's. There seams to be something different about the post pandemic CCI #10 caps, but I dunno what it is I just know that I have always used CCI #10 caps without any problems.

I’ve heard that from others. Now, they are the smallest of the caps when compared. They are smaller than rem 10’s by good distance. I can sometimes force them on my first couple cylinders with stock nipples, especially pietta nipples, but after fouling begins…it’s a no-go. So I do use them from time to time and then switch. They also fit my pietta Spiller and Burr I discovered since I recorded the video. Other than that. Nada. But forcing them on does save my others a couple cylinders at a time. Thanks.

@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb Another thing I do is I cut boards out of 3/16" plastic about 8" long and maybe 3" wide I drill and tap at least 12 holes in em. The holes are either tapped 12-28 or 6x.75 for Uberti or Pieta and When I remove nipples from a cyl I just screw em in by hand into the board. This does two things... One... it allows me to not lose the nipples (lost more than one down the sink drain) and two... I just toss the board in my ultrasonic cleaner. You could of course use a toothbrush and dawn and the scrub the nipples that way. The board allows you to do a good job but ultrasonics are down in the $30 range for ones large enough

Hi J, I finally found time to shoot my 1851 Navy! I had a friend video my first few shots. I used the 1075 caps and triple 7 powder. It worked out pretty well. I’m a tinkerer, so listening to the problems concerning caps coming off, especially on the first cylinder, I’m wondering if you could take a candle and soot the nipples before you put the caps on? Obviously, you’d do this BEFORE you load up the cylinders. The soot from a standard taper candle might solve that issue. I’ll try it out next time I shoot. Also, do you think it might be possible to take some 400-600 carbide sand paper and carefully size the nipples down a little to accommodate the cci # 10 caps? I don’t have any cci # 10 caps so I’m not sure if enough material could safely be removed from the nipples without compromising the integrity of the nipples structure. Another possible option to consider would be using a pair of snap ring pliers to stretch the cap out a bit. Or, grind down a small pair of needle nose pliers so you could set the cap on the very end and stretch the cap a little. I don’t know if any of these suggestions would solve the problem, but a little modification might do the trick. When I put myself in the era of when these weapons were new, I feel quite sure the men on both sides of the civil war modified and altered their weapons as the need arose. I like to think of it this way, the Colts and Remingtons of the 1840s-1860s were the Glocks and Sig-Sauers of their time. Surely the need to improvise, customize and adapt were prevalent then as it is now. I had an English girlfriend way back when I was young and she made a comment once that has stuck with me to this day! “You goddamn Americans! You have to change everything!” I replied, “Of course darling! It’s what we do!” 😂

My neighbor unloaded all his BP rifles and such last summer via garage sale, and I picked them up. I bowhunt and gun hunt, but this past fall was my foray into BP and it is addictive. My rifles use 209 primers, so there was a bit of a delay finding those last year, however he included more than enough to start with and I was able to pick up couple hundred which will last my lifetime-around Dec 23 i decided the 1858 Uberti revolver would be a nice addition to the BP collection -after procuring all the items needed to support that side of my new habit, I was unpleasantly introduced to the #10 & #11 shortage, including a rip-off from what appeared to be a legit site! A few months older and wiser I’m amazed you’re able to stay calm about this. It infuriates me that the CCI/Remington President keeps making videos about what great 🇺🇸s they are, etc etc but then they refuse to regularly produce any percussion caps. RWS is putting CCI to shame. Part of me has to wonder if there is a political aspect to it, because like others have said, not producing caps is driving people out of the hobby and keeping others from starting. Isn’t that a particular group’s goal-to keep firearms out of the hands of law-abiding citizens? I’m not saying there is or isn’t a nefarious objective behind this shortage, but it is VERY frustrating for people like me who go out and buy alllll the other BP accessories, only to find I can’t obtain 1 key piece. I’m slowly acquiring now the pieces to mfg my own caps, but I really didn’t want to have to spend that much time preparing caps just to be able to hunt ML for a week. I’m not giving up BP, but I doubt I’ll be able to interest my kids in this hobby. At least they like archery.

Graf and Sons has RWS caps in 2500/250 cap lots. With shipping and Hazmat works out to $0.16/cap. Last pricing on CCI #11's run about $0.11/cap. If you want to shoot your guns, rather than use them as paperweights, is the five cent difference really going to matter? I have been looking for CCI caps for going on four years now, and never had an email alert trigger, or seen them available in local stores. So the RWS caps being available saved the day. Making my own caps is where I draw the line. Just don't have the time.
