Brother, you speak to our hearts out here. Just finished smoothing the action ( most needed) on my 1860 fluted and addressing the front sight. Your videos and knowledge are spectacular. Need to get to know the piece a bit before antique finish and naming. You do fine work! Thanks!

Absolutely love your content. Your cap and ball content is awesome. I’ve been doing a lot of percussion revolver content on my channel lately. I really like that 1860 with the fluted cylinder. It looks sharp.

What does it mean to antique it? I’m just getting into bp revolvers. So far I have the Uberti 1860 Army and the Pietta 1860 Snub Nose revolver which is identical to the Uberti just shorter barrel. As well as the NAA Super Companion which from what I’ve been told is the only muzzleloader that can shoot smokeless powder? Maybe someday I will put some bullseye in it but for now I’m using triple 7. You’ve helped me learn a lot about how these bp revolvers work so thank you 🙏 you and mike are great 👍

Great video Blackie! I picked up one of these exact models for 275. new with box at a local gun show, after everybody else ignored it looking for auto cartridge guns. I took it out to sight it, expecting to file the front sight, try different powder measures, sizes of balls and hoped for the best, but I'll be dipped if the gun wasnt shooting bullseyes at 35 feet straight out of the box with 35 gr of pyrodex and .457 hornady balls. As #10 Remington caps are hard to find, I used #11 but it actually worked fine without issues at all. This is a damn fine gun and I will buy a conversion cylinder from Howell and keep it. Wish I could give the same praise to my Pietta Remington 1858 .44, but that's a different story.

Here’s a tip on antiquing steel that works for me. I use it mostly on knives & axes, but it will work on a gun. It does vary with the different contents of your particular steel. We all know how gun blue liquid actually etches into your steel, I do a series of bluing & removing the gun blue with Birchwood Casey Gun Blue & Rust Remover. It contains sulphuric acid & phosphoric acid, so wear hand & eye protection. Just depends on the steel or iron alloy, but you will see a desirable finish after the remover is used. Each time you blue, it’s etching the steel deeper. It may be 1 or 2 times of bluing & removing, or more. The dull finish is a dead grey, & it doesn’t rust any faster than a blue finish. Looks similar to the “Old Silver” finish on modern blackpowder revolvers.

Wow! You ve owned 30 of them?! That s incredible! Good find! I have an Authentic Colt fluted model w/Shoulder Stock. That s fun! I cast from a Signature Colt .44 mold. It casts a 195g 'Richmond' looking elongated. It performs v e r y well! 27g FFFg BP sends it down range with plenty of smack. Yeah, Colt got greedy with the fluted cylinder, trying to lighten it even more. He quickly went to the 'Cavalry/Belted' (rebated) cylinder to strengthen it. He also 'coned' the chambers for further strengthening. Also, the original barrel length was 7 1/2''. The military demanded an 8'' barrel. Colt did this w i t h o u t lengthening the lever. That s why the lever is set back a little.

yep colt wanted the power of a dragoon in the hand size and weight of a navy model and he came real close..which is esp .impressive when you concider the metal available to him at the time and all this was being down with steam power or water power machines

With ya, on "special" guns being named - my very first 1911, (bought for $80.00, in the 70's!)had been set up w/ bullseye sights, and I fitted it w/ a long trigger, Commander style hammer and beaver tail grip safety. Used it in NRA bullseye competition, always shot better than I could hold it! BUT, it wasn't a Colt, it,was a 1927 Argentine, .45acp, so I named it "El Gaucho". Still my bedside pistol....

The very best 1860 Army reproduction was made in Belgium in the 1960's from Centaure Arms it has the European Colt markings and are about as incidental to an original Colt 1860 you will see. They are scarce and expensive I got lucky and bought mine from a guy who got it when his granddad died and had no clue what it was. It was new in the original box with all the paper work and even the wax paper the gun was warped in. I ask him what he wanted and he said how about a $100.00 I said sold. Check out www.1960nma.org (FROCA) I wash uberti would make their arbor long enough to touch the barrel assembly like a real Colt or even the Pietta. Great video like always Blackie Thanks.

Heck as tight as she seems to shoot. Perhaps you been saying her name all along. She shoots Blood Tight. Just a thought. I named a few guns over the years many truck and all my bikes. But many of the vehicle names were not very nice for public ears. Mostly muttered under my breath as I kicked the bike over and over. The names becoming more colorful and longer as my foot and hip got to ailing me. Anyhow another great video. Thank you Sir. I'm curious if a conical hollow point has ever been done? Baring the rammer deformity Heck I'm sure one could be made to support the hole. If just for the sake of seeing what a Walker loaded at 50 grains would produce a hubcap sized spent round. Know the feeling. I remember that video of Mike's. He did a couple on the 1862 Dance revolvers... Been on my list ever since. My dad bought me one for my birthday this year. I haven't shot it yet but I've been tricking it out a little. Slix Shots in it, got her timed and tuned, now I'm just debating if I want to antique it, being a Confederate design... Ain't made up my mind yet. I do need to fit the wood a little better to the metal either way. It's a 44 also. Just ordered Mark Hubbs Kerr bullet mold for it. I'm pondering crowning this 8 inch barrel too. Like ya say, they generally just cut em off flat, this one definitely has that issue, but it balances in my hand like my 51s. Looking forward to watching you antique that one boss. Nice gun. I eyeballed those too. Pondering a cap and ball for my wife. She likes bigger bore stuff and wants something a little odd ball. Lol

@@BLACKIETHOMAS I think Pietta and Uberti are in a quality arms race. One improves quality and the other does something else to improve their quality. My old Pietta Sheriff model of the early 1980's needed repaired out of the box to get it there. Now days they either are close or exceed many modern cartridge guns in finish. My N.A. 58 new Pietta made in 2018 is really impressive compared to the 80's BP pistol I had.

The first Colt to have 4 clicks by design was the SAA Mod.P. All previous S.A. Colts had 3 clicks. The actions are the same design except for the "safety" notch (which is the reason for the 4 clicks instead of 3) and the 2 fingered hand (necessary because of the smaller diameter ratchet of the the SAA) which has nothing to do with a "click" when cycling the action.

@@BLACKIETHOMAS Thanks, but somehow I think that hand on ratchet click happens only on way back to nipple not when cocking it. SAA has safety click, that's nr.1, then goes halfcock Nr.2 and then bolt makes other two.

I have a question regarding Uberti's quality. I've had 2 Pietta's break on me with moderate use, and it's honestly really upset me because cap and ball revolvers is really becoming my favorite hobby. Is Uberti good quality? I'm wanting to replace my broken Pietta's with a Uberti if it's better quality. I'm hoping to have an entire collection of C&B revolvers soon.

uberti is good quality and so are pietta today..in the game of cowboy action shooting they have to be..in the past uberti was the higher grade gun..so a older gun can reflect this in terms of quality

The Uberti 1860 I bought around 10 years ago had some issues, to say the least. Within 2 weeks time, the loading lever latch pin fell out, and the front sight fell off. This is not to say that I dislike Uberti's, as I still buy them, and a Frisco model .45Colt, and Bisley .357 are my latest. For some reason, I think the company tends to have a little less quality control with the cap and balls. It's never anything major though, usually things like I mentioned above, however, these little things can be very annoying considering the price point. I've only had 2 pietta's in my life, and would still choose a Uberti over any Pietta. I'll go ahead and add that the navy will always be my favorite, as the 60's do not feel right in my hand, but different people, different pistols. I almost forgot, I had a 3rd model dragoon from Uberti and it had the same problem with the latch pin.

a down and dirty repair is to take the screw and use pliers to lightly squeeze the threads bugger them just a tiny bit see if that a fix..if not go get new set of screws if thats a no go then the frame holes are too big contact uberti for that..hope this helps

No shame in that sir, an excellent show of marksmanship 👏🏽 Your point about all guns not being created equal is interesting; do you think this is down to manufacturing tolerances or drops in source materials or craftsmanship? In the UK we have a phrase "a Friday afternoon car". The belief being that cars produced during the 1960s to 80s on a Friday afternoon would always breakdown more and rust quicker, do you think the same could be true of guns that just don't quite shoot as good as another?

The front sight is nickel silver (German silver) on the actual Colts. (Walker wanted this with the 'Walker Model' specifically for the pupose of reflecting light for better sighting. This is documented in letters between Colt and Walker). What did you mean when you said that replicas click three times and Colts click four times? You stated you have a replica there (Uberti). Bolt cam, trigger, trigger, bolt. 4 clicks.
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS 4 жыл бұрын
yes but most replica guns lack the click of the hand spring..this uberti made to be licensed to the colt name has that click..so it has 4 most only have the 3..nothing really important..just a little point

Dear Blackie, After i watched this video, i got myself 1860 army, also Uberti. Your videos are far best C&B videos on percussion revolver theme. Keep up the good work! One question, is there any "normal" distance (or, can it be corrected) hammer over-travel on 1860 army model? The thing is, after i zeroed it, and marked the rear sights, like You explained in master sights video, cylinder hand snapped, the entire tip of it. Now, i replaced it with brand new hand assembly, and, now hammer is over-traveling more, and messing up all sight marks i made (in cocked position sights are higher placed).. Can this be corrected in any way (i mean DIY way), or should i get the new hammer, and redo sighting in process (which is really tedious and loooong process)? best regards!

check the tip of your trigger..( the sear )thats what is engaging the hammer and set the position of the hammer at rest at full cock..the broken tip of the hand may have damaged it and altered the at rest position..just a thought

Blackie, Hi from Canada! This was the first video of your that I saw, and I'm sorry that I didn't find you sooner. Very excellent video :) I've watched duelist1954 for quite some time, and I just asked him if he could only have 1 BP revolver, which one. He said "I’d get an Uberti 1860 Colt Army model...probably my favorite sixgun." It wasn't even a toss up between that and the Remington New Model Army. I thought that the muzzle up when cocking the hammer method was the way to avoid cap jams, I'm guessing you found a better way with the sideways tilt. Does that in fact work better, or do you do that because sky muzzling at that range is not permitted?
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS 4 жыл бұрын
i find the tipping will let the spent cap fall out better than the sky method at least for my style

Hi Blakie , i ask you because i know your the only one who can give me a 100% reliable answer for that particularly question now that you got both 1860 and 1861 Colt replica both by Uberti. Can you , swap the 1851/61 grip , grip frame , spring etc... to fit on the 1860 ? Because it's sincerely is my dream pistol , and i would probably build one if that's confirmed he can be done . I have small hands being 6'2 and i really feel the original Colt 1851grip better , heard Uberti duplicate them very close on both 1851 and 1861 , that's why . Thank you for all the BP videos by the way .
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS 4 жыл бұрын
yes the grip frames for a 1860 and 1861 will swap the holes are the same...BUT.....the 51 / 61 grips is a bit smaller in size so if you want a smaller grip go with the 61 if you need bigger to fil large hands you can put the larger army grip on the 51 / 61 colts and by luck it will also go on the single action army
