Love these circus vans, they look so nice!! If you want points that work with Hornby Locomotives and Rolling Stock you could also get Peco track. The Peco track is designed in the UK and is meant to be more comparable with OO, but the track is also available in North America. I personally use Atlas switches and haven’t had too many issues with my OO models from Hornby, Bachmann UK, Oxford and Dapol, but all mine are newer and appear to have thinner flanges. You could also grind the flanges down if you have a grinder.

The main thing is to make sure whatever track you get is Code 100. What code are your Atlas switches?

@@ZeldaTheSwordsman mine are Code 100, if you use code 73 or something like that then that would definitely cause issues

Great review on the Hornby Percy and the Circus train set I miss the range Hornby had for Thomas and friends series but it’s good that Bachamann are still releasing new characters and rolling stock from the series thanks for sharing this 👍💙🚂

Those circus cars are so similar, that I probably wouldn't notice any difference unless I had all of them in the same room. I am surprised you used the British transformer instead of using an American one, since on this controller you can remove the track power wires. Hornby track is code 100, and so is EZ track. The switch frogs on the Hornby track aren't as good with larger wheels compared to other Code 100 track. If you do relay the track on your layout, I recommend using Peco track as that is engineered for both OO and HO trains.
@ZeldaTheSwordsman3 ай бұрын
The Atlas track is probably the culprit, since it sounds like _that's_ Code 83 (so it probably gives Tyco and Life-Like models issues too). I know I haven't had any ride issues with Hornby models on E-Z track or on Code 100 Atlas track. For my money, anything smaller than Code 100 should be avoided like the plague unless you're willing to replace a crapton of wheelsets. When it comes to track, performance > minor aesthetic gains.

I have a lot of Hornby stuff, and atlas track, and all my Hornby stuff runs great on there. You might have to invest in newer atlas track? Great video by the way

Speaking of the circus vans, here's hoping that Bachmann will re-release them for their brand someday (you know, besides the funfair versions).

tbh i'm not that into circus trains because I think pardon the pun it's a bit of a circus. whenever you decide to build that custom layout you want to build with narrow gauge go for the code 100 track so both Hornby and Bachmann can run on it. use your failure to run hornby trains on code 83 track as motivation to build a code 100 layout
@ZeldaTheSwordsman3 ай бұрын
Hornby track and Bachmann track are both Code 100; the only difference is what radii the curves come in (Well, that and Bachmann track anymore is E-Z track at least here in the US). So you shouldn't have any ride issues with Hornby Thomas stock on Bachmann track (or any other Code 100 track); I know I haven't. If the Atlas track is Code 83, though, that might be giving you some grief (especially if there are any insufficiently-smoothed transitions between track codes). I expect plenty of older American rolling stock that also has "pizza cutter" flanges would likewise prove troublesome.
@VintageRenewed6 ай бұрын
Modern Hornby trains actually run fine on US track both code 100 and code 83 The problem your having of Hornby derailing on your layout is likely due to ballast being above the ties or that the atlas track is beat up and has problems. I’ve usually had derailing problems with atlas switches even when running my US trains
@modelrailfan376 ай бұрын
I don’t think it’s the ballast. The Hornby TTTE stuff has really thick flanges. On Hornby track the thick flanges tend to help because the rails are taller, meaning the thick flanges help with keeping stuff on the track. Unfortunately on anything besides Hornby or Peco track you will get derailments though…
@TrainTsarFun6 ай бұрын
It’s definitely not the ballast - and it’s definitely the frogs at the switches and crossings.
@modelrailfan376 ай бұрын
@@TrainTsarFun totally agree! Depending how heavily you ballasted around your switches you might be able to replace the ones on your current layout with Hornby or Peco ones (the Peco ones are easier to find over here, they are a little more expensive than the Atlas ones but they work better with OO models and are better quality too!!
@ZeldaTheSwordsman3 ай бұрын
@@modelrailfan37 E-Z track should be fine as well, at least in my experience; I haven't had any of my Hornby stock have a fit with E-Z Track switches. Of course, good luck cutting an E-Z Track turnout down to fit. But AFAIK anything Code 100 (which Hornby track is, HO/OO doesn't go any bigger) _should_ work.
@ZeldaTheSwordsman3 ай бұрын
1. Well, see, this _isn't_ a "modern" Hornby train. Nor is *anything* from their Thomas range, except Dart. "Modern Hornby trains" is a term that only really applies to the superdetail range and toolings newer than ~2010. The Thomas range (much like the Railroad range) mostly used older toolings, including in many cases the old wheel molds with the pizza cutter flanges. Just look at the flanges on those van wheels. 2. I would more bet on the rail size combined with the deep flanges being the issue. 3. For the record, Hornby track is also Code 100 (Apologies to TrainTsarFun for how many comments I've said this in).
