I just realized that in addition to the four pearls, the deadline passing would give Percy hope that Sally is not what matters most because the solstice quest has already failed. The part where he understands what matters most and chooses to save his friends has moved to episode 3, so the new question at this point is how to address the war. This is a great way to externalize his thinking from the pearl decision scene in the book (which I love). It would not be so impactful on screen without the changes, and as Mike says, it's entertaining for readers. I thought they would lose a pearl to Procrustes before episode 7 came out.
