I had a flatcoat, what a great dog! Great swimmers, friendly personality, and in the summer his black hair would get a dark red tint like an irish setter.

I have my doubts about training with treats as a reward. I have had 5 flatcoats over the years boys and girls and I have only used praise as a training reward and this seems to be enough as they will do anything to please you. The only time I have used treats is when showing in the ring to keep their attention on me and not the judge or the other dogs.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! Praise can be a fantastic reward, especially for reinforcing behaviours once they're well established. However, when teaching new behaviours, a motivator like food can help speed up the learning process. There’s certainly nothing wrong with using food to reinforce the behaviours we want to see more of-it’s all about adding value to the learning experience. The world is full of distractions and reinforcements for our dogs, whether it's other dogs, people, or even wildlife. By providing reinforcement ourselves, we help our dogs understand that sticking with us is rewarding. For many dogs, praise alone may not be enough, but we can combine praise with other reinforcers like toys, play, or even exploring the environment. Food is indeed a powerful tool when used thoughtfully, but it’s not the only option. By mixing in praise, toys, and environmental rewards, we can create a balanced approach that keeps training engaging and effective
