First of all, I'm fascinated by the very high quality of the comments posted here (Semendrija123 and others), which is really fantastic - and even surprising given that these popular topics often attract mass posts that write without having anything to say. I really appreciate the information brought here because you have knowledge and even experience. In discussions of such high quality, consensus is not even desirable, as it should not even exist when talking about something as vast as a species, even more in the raptorial domain. Concerning the golden eagle, which is highly polymorphic, as is frequent in Northern species, occupying niches that close to the equator correspond to several species. It should be noted that in the past the golden eagle even hunted the European macaque (Macaca sylvanus, now extinct in the old domains). According to the habitat, there are golden eagles with very different ecological adaptations, from slow individuals to other very fast, and the diversity of the species has been much more vast in the past; it is a shame and very unfair that conservation is reduced to 'preserving the species', since, as occurs frequently in the northern region, one species can be worth many, especially the golden eagle. Concerning the hypothetical pursuit of a golden eagle to a pigeon, the eagle, even if was a very well chosen especim, would always be at a disadvantage, due to its weight, when the pigeon decided to climb. Among the Goshawks, the raptor that I best know in nature, there are in the Iberian peninsula from Jay's or Cooper's style (very rounded wings, fairly slow flight when rarely cruise in open, but that fly among the vegetation far better than any other goshawk) and, in another extreme, some rare old goshawks with pigeon silhouette i.e. somewhat narrow pointed wings, which are speciallists of hunting domestic pigeons and are near to the average gyrfalcons in speed (although only in 500m or so).

Yes, different subspecies have to some extent different performance levels, and also every bird of prey inside the given species is individual with its own characteristics, so there are also differences. But generally the falcons, especially the Gyr and Peregrine are the fastest birds of prey, and they are among the fastest birds in level flight overall! There are examples of wild eagles catching and killing falconry birds, but that is always the case of unfit falcon or the falcon that has panicked and was caught, but under the same conditions (wild birds or falconry birds), the falcon is faster. Regarding Goshawks, I live in Europe where we have goshawks that are evolved to chase and catch the pigeons in the air, performing similar to peregrine falcons, and often stooping from a high above and pursuing pigeons all over the sky! They are very fast but slightly slower than peregrines and they don't have the stamina of the falcon. They are able to chase the pigeons for short time closer to the ground, but are not able to outfly the pigeons high in the sky during prolong chases like the peregrine can! But their maneuverability at slower speed and acceleration is immense! I have tested my female Goshawk with the GPS telemetry after one year of break from flying, and she was able to accelerate from 0-70 km/h in 1,3 seconds and she needed less than 20 meters to reach that speed! But on average, good falconry goshawks can reach max top speed in level flight around 80-90 km/h. The wild goshawks have no problem reaching 100 km/h or more!

You can literally force evolution into hyperspeed by making a population of peregrine falcons to dive faster and faster from a young age and breeding the fastest ones until you end up breaking the records over and over, then after a few decades you end up with a completely different bird who is faster than it's wild brethren. case in point. Greyhounds vs Wolves.
@lamaspacos
@lamaspacos Жыл бұрын
@@BMWS1000RRRYes, true. But is better to consider only the adult falcons, because they have much harder plumage than the juvenile ones and therefore they are much faster in the stoops. Juvenile peregrines are GENERALLY much more hierofalco type, with comparatively soft feathers, much more agile, great in chasing e.g. a pigeon, but far below in stooping speed.

The top speed I have measured with GPS telemetry in no wind conditions, and on the ground level was 120 km/h, but we have to keep in mind that wild peregrines are even faster! The cheetah definitely has better acceleration from zero to its top speed, and only the goshawk can match it!

I agree, but this is only a small cutout from the much longer video, and there are objective reasons why I didn’t uploaded the whole thing. Anyway, the car was going around +90 km/h and the bird was overtaking it even if she was flying against the 10 km/h wind. I always fly my birds against the wind and I measure the wind speed before every session. In other words, her real air speed was around 110 km/h, and she wasn’t in her best shape because she was young and had only about 10 training days, and she was also low on the weight (less muscle mass)! But after longer training periods, and at higher weight, all my birds had no problem going 120 km/h in no wind conditions!

Actually, they do have the highest level flight speed. From my experience, the only bird you can’t hunt with success from the fist is the sand grouse. I have measured my peregrines flying at 100-120 km/h in level flight, and they can’t match the wild peregrines. On the other hand wild peregrines hunt sand grouse without any problems. Basically, there is no bird that can outfly fit wild peregrines or gyrfalcon with serious intentions.

@@Semendrija123 Swifts are the fastest in level flight, with the common swift having a highest definitely confirmed speed of about 110km/h. White-throated needletail swift have the highest reported speed, at around 170km/h, but this claim is not definite (though likely), just like your claim.
@Semendrija123
@Semendrija123 2 ай бұрын
@@SeverinHawkland7855 no they are not! There are few falcon species that hunt swifts on regular basis like Peregrine falcon, Hobby falcon, Eleonora falcon, Orange breasted falcon, Bat falcon and Taita falcon. Unlike that nonsense claim of White throated swift flying at 170 km/h in level flight that is circulating the net, I have precisely measured the speed of my peregrines at no wind conditions with the GPS telemetry at the elevation going from 0,5-1 m. So, my measurements are absolutely scientific, and the data for the White throated swift is anecdotal evidence given by the people who counted seconds (without stopwatch ⏱️) of the swifts flying across certain area with the strong tail wind 💨 With enough strong wind you can have Albatross flying between 100-200 km/h, but its true air speed is actually incredibly low. Here you can see how much faster the Hobby falcon is compared to the swift: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3myh2dml56SrqMsi=-IOClJzaGIxvz9i2 I have also flown Hobby falcon, and I can tell you that the Hobby falcon is slower in level flight compared to the Peregrine falcon. Now, in some parts of the world Peregrines are predominantly hunting swifts, and here is one study that is describing Peregrine falcon hunting tactics when attacking White throated swifts: sora.unm.edu/sites/default/files/journals/wb/v37n03/p0149-p0155.pdf You can see that the peregrine is dominating the swift in any type of flight (stoop, level flight, climb). Keep in mind that the peregrine subspecies in question is Anatum peregrine. In the US there are two other subspecies of the peregrine, Peales and Tundrius, and both are on average faster in level flight than Anatum, because they use level flight pursuits significantly more often because of the terrain and prey species they are hunting. Here is another study of the Orange breasted falcon, where the consensus was that the falcon was considerably faster in level flight than even Mourning dove (which is one of the fastest flying birds), and White collared swift: www.raptors-international.org/book/birds_of_prey_1986/Jenny_Cade_1986_119-124.pdf And here is example how GPS telemetry works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6rOeYdveMp6sMUsi=Gp9gCwIkdAlCmPzX This is the data from the hunt with the Calidus subspecies of the peregrine (peregrine that lives in Siberian territory and is considered the fastest level flying peregrine). In this particular case the male Calidus was hunting the racing pigeon, and all fast flying birds are trying to outclimb the peregrine, because peregrine has much higher wing loading and it spends huge amounts of energy when climbing up, unlike the pigeons or swifts that have significantly lower wing loading and consequently spending incomparably less energy while climbing. But when the fit peregrine levels with the racing pigeon, it is game over, and in this video you can see the level speeds in excess of 130 km/h, but since there are always winds at higher altitudes, I didn’t claim that these are true air speeds for the peregrine. In any case, the male caught the pigeon after more than 35 km of chase, that went almost 1 km in height! Don’t believe in nonsense claims about swift flying 170 km/h in level flight. It is physically impossible for any bird to generate that speed on its own power without the help of the wind! I train peregrines for the 400 m races in the Middle East, and when the falcons have good tail wind, they can cover that distance in 14 seconds going from the standstill, and their top speeds were sometimes over 170 km/h, but that are not realistic speeds and times for the conditions without wind. In no wind conditions the best times for the 400 m distance are in the range of 17-18 seconds, and the top speeds are in the range of 100-120 km/h. All the data is provided by the laser and radar measurements, backed up by the GPS telemetry. Hope this helps you to better understand the falcons speed compared to other bird species?! Edit: Here is the video of my male peregrine going after the pigeon with the GPS data merged. The falcon was not in the top shape because we just started flying, but you can get the sense of the speed with the data in the corner of the screen: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpq1h5Zoa6x9jLMsi=XxyQaedqE3aOr0LX

@@Semendrija123 your claims are just as good as those of the needletails' speed. The things you cite are either outdated or incredibly obscure, with several flaws in them. You fail to take into consideration all the other factors at play, like how the falcons dive to gain speed, in which they are faster. Your measurements could also be made up, I can't know. "Level flight" as I mean, is that it can generate all the speed on its own, with no other conditions like previous momentum or wind in any direction (those two being just examples, there are more). In that regard, hundreds or thousands of sources state the swifts are faster. But since no birds would be in a chase where one goes after the other in a straight line for several minutes, such simple values are not indicative of practical scenarios.

@@SeverinHawkland7855 this is probably the most laughable comment I have ever read! You actually have extremely rare opportunity to get the most comprehensive data from me, that was not possible to find anywhere else in the world just a decade ago because there were no devices that were able to precisely measure the speed of the birds flight, and you still continue to believe in nonsense?! First, the studies done on falcons hunting behavior can’t be outdated, birds are not cars where you have the new model coming out every 7 years with the new engine, suspension and improved performance! There is clearly stated that the falcons were faster is self powered flight which includes horizontal flight, and on top of that I have provided you the video where the falcon is destroying the swift in every single flight parameter. You obviously don’t understand the dynamics of flight, but in that video you can clearly see the moments where swift was able to outmaneuver the Hobby falcon and in such situations the falcon would lose speed momentum and would even drop below the swift. If the swift was faster, it would be able to simply power off in a strait line, or out climb the falcon, but that didn’t happen because the falcon is actually faster and was able to regain the speed and overtake the swift over and over again. I will also give you another example so you can see how superior level speed is manifested in the flight/hunt. I have seen numerous instances where buzzards were stooping from the height on the low flying pigeons, and in the stoop the buzzards were faster, but the moment pigeons were able to outmaneuver the stooping buzzard, they were able to power off and leave the buzzard in the dust. The second slower bird lose momentum from the stoop, faster bird is able to escape using superior level flight speed. And that is not what is happening with fit falcons! The fact you have numerous articles that say that the swift is the fastest level flying bird means nothing, because all of them are just copy-pasting the nonsense claim that the swift can fly at 170 km/h! I challenge you to find a scientific method they used to measure that speed. I’m 100% sure you will not find it because that claim was made decades ago by anonymous source! The claim for the common swift top speed also can’t be compared to our measurements with the GPS, laser and radar speed devices we use for our falcons. Scientists used high speed camera to calculate the speed, and that is far less reliable method because they use birds size (which they can’t perfectly measure), and how many body lengths per time the bird can cover in that frame. Since the camera was fixed, they couldn’t know if the birds entered the frame from the dive or if they were flying straight. They also didn’t take the wind in to calculations, so all that claims are just speculation. What you have on the other hand is the video of the falcon dominating swift in the air under same conditions. You have to be crazy to disregard that fact! You will also find hundreds of articles and claims that the ducks, swifts, pigeons etc. are faster in level flight than peregrine, but I, and my falconer colleagues have hunted all these birds (swifts excluded) of the fist even when the pigeons or ducks are already in flight and at an altitude. Fit peregrine is able to catch them even under most disadvantageous situations! The only bird you can’t catch of the fist on regular basis is the sand grouse. Only wild peregrines that are incomparably more capable than our birds can catch them regularly. And here is the video were you can see how we train falcons for the races: kzbin.infodFYomVn_UOo?si=Xld-yGB84_GDJYzO You can see that the falcon is on average flying over 100 km/h and you have to keep in mind that we always fly our falcons against the wind during training. In other words, that falcons true air speed is even higher! I also use anemometer to know the wind speed so I can precisely determine the speed of the falcon, since you need to know the true air speed because that is determining factor for the training. We are professionals who train the falcons for the races that are on the highest level in the world, and you must have the exact data on the falcons progress to be able to train it accordingly. Here are also few videos of the falcons finishing 400 m race in no wind conditions: kzbin.infoTI9OmyZ74vA?si=Eg5EPODe65VmQR7p kzbin.infoC97q0ZB3Uuw?si=5WTJwOUSahBhauYf And here is the video of the wild falcon dominating top racing pigeons: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXelmnx-fquFmMUsi=2w3potz6P6EIdRQt And here you can see wild Tundrius peregrine subspecies hunting in level flight. Peregrine is simply dominating the air space with is superior speed! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKikYmZ9nbCbY8Usi=X6bn580rb7JKneZZ

that thing is strugling to follow a car EVEN at ground level. I find it HARD to believe the stuff they say about it going above 370 kph straight!! . Bullshit It may dive as fast as you want it to dive, but level flight faster than a 6000 Watts drone. I don't think so.

Who told you that peregrine can fly that fast in level flight? There is no living creature that can move faster than 130 km/h on its own power without the help of the wind. You have mixed things up in your head?!

Swift is faster...in level flight 70mph
@Semendrija123
@Semendrija123 25 күн бұрын
@@Michael-td3gz actually, swift is not faster in level flight. I have measured the level flight speed of numerous peregrines of mine, and they could easily reach 75 mph in no wind conditions. You also have to keep in mind that in the wild, peregrine would always be faster compared to the falconry bird because wild birds have incomparably higher number of flight hours (directly correlated to speed and stamina), and they also fly at higher body mass (higher muscle mass). Also, in some places swifts represent the highest percentage of the prey taken by peregrines, and the only way they can escape is not by speed, it is exclusively by maneuvering.

@Semendrija123
@Semendrija123 Ай бұрын
No she is not, because she is immature peregrine female that had only 9 days of training prior to that video, and her training weight is considerably lower than that of the wild falcons, so she is having around 20% of muscle deficiency. She would be considerably faster in her optimal weight, with much more time on the wing, and when pursuing live prey, even though she was going above the 100 km/h mark in this particular flight, which is faster than most other birds can achieve.

I get that a lot from the people who have never hunted with the falcon, or who have never seen a wild peregrine hunting. There is common misconception floating on the net that the swifts are the fastest level flying birds, which is basically a nonsense that has no basis in reality! Peregrines and few other falcons are hunting swifts on regular basis and are capable of outfying them in level flight and in the stoop. Here is an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3myh2dml56SrqM
