I've been looking for this. It's actually scary. There is footage of a kill by these falcons with a normal camera. It's just visible in one frame and the other bird just appears to drop dead for no reason.

Fun little science fact: the reason insects are so crazy when scaled up is due to the cubed/squared law. Volume (and therefore mass) increases WAY faster than surface area, so smaller creatures have comparatively less mass to deal with than larger animals. If a flea was actually scaled up to the size of a human, it wouldn't move nearly as quickly (comparatively) as it does now.

That and heat is a massive problem. Its the reason why mamals can't just reapirate through their skin like insects, and must have respiratory systems. Also why elephants have wrinkly skin and such large ears. If an insect or even some rodents were scaled up they would also cook themselves to death. (Pls correct me if I'm wrong)

@@sleepylion9511 it wouldnt even get that far, insects dont breathe through their skin per se, they have a system of hollow tubes all through their body called trachae (similar to the trachea and bronchioles in human respitory system) leading to openings in their exoskeleton called spiracles, to pull in gas they contract and expand their whole bodies. basically most insects are one big lung, if you scale that up you have a lot more mass/volume, but the tubes are now massive tunnels and there wouldnt be enough surface area for gas exchange. if you shot an insect with a mega ray it would either immediately be crushed under its own weight or asphyxiate. anyway happy friday. edit: however you are correct in theory if they survived gravity and the whole suffocation thing they would overheat, in fact most things, even big things, would overheat if you made it bigger, an organisms scale defines so many of its features. goes the other way too, if you had goldfish sized whales their fins would be too small to swim and theyd drown :(

Falcons have relatively small talons compared to other raptor birds, so unlike other similar birds they can't just catch food and stab it to death in its grip. Hence, they dive bomb prey and punch the shit out of it.

the reason the falcon is more maneuverable whilst its diving is because the air is flowing over its wings faster, which it uses like the alierons on a plane or the spoiler on a car, the faster the airflow the more force it can redirect to move its mass f1 cars can drive upside down (in theory) because their spoilers generate enormous downforce at speed, wings are just cooler adaptive spoilers
@VELIkiq8
@VELIkiq8 2 жыл бұрын
However on planes once you exede certain speed the controls stiffen up and its almost imposible to maneuver the plane. (sorry for my bad english)
@HappyDragneels_page
@HappyDragneels_page 2 жыл бұрын
@@VELIkiq8 yes you are talking about supersonic flight, once you go faster than around 600 mph the air starts to compress, which completely changes flight mechanics, air that is compressed is denser, heavier, and harder to move and starts to behave like a liquid, so the air control surfaces get held in place, like a car door underwater, locked closed by the density difference

The peregrine falcon dives so fast, it has small tubers in the entrance to his nasal openings. Without them, air would be flowing so fast in front of the bird it would either not enter reliably(smothering the bird), or, when entering, it would be too violent, hurting it. Just like the SR-71 engine's cones, the tubers break the flow in lower speed, turbulent air, allowing it to breathe comfortable when reaching 200 mph+

The animal olympics were so fun. I remember a few times the insects broke the record, but missed the target so they were disqualified, which was the only way for them to not win every game. But scaling insects up was cheating in its own way since they didn't account for gravity or or the square-cube law. Scaled up insects would die under gravity and oxygen

When traveling faster through air the resistance and friction determines direction. Small movements have larger effects at higher speeds. The same hand put of a car window feels different at 200 than at 60. At high enough speed the drag from a hand out the window would turn the whole car.

Fun fact: around half the speed of sound, the air acquires the ability to be compressed, thus increasing the drag of anything moving at that speed (or higher) by a lot. Maybe that acts like a natural speed limit for the falcon

I work for a school and one of our bus drivers had a falcon go through the windshield of his bus one morning. It was violent and it destroyed the glass entirely while also damaging the drivers face and hands. Also a friend of mines dad got into falconry for a while and would use his bird to hunt. In order to get one you capture them with these cool traps that just gently cover the birds wings with wire bits. When they’re on the ground they are very docile and if captured will offer little to no fight at all. While he was looking for the right one he caught several falcons before deciding on one. The trap has a clear box to put bait in. He put two hamsters in this box and the birds would dive for them. So as I’m being told this I ask my friend “so your dad used the same two poor hamsters? Those guys have got some serious PTSD.”

I really have a problem with scaling general feats of insects to larger animals. I mean, I'm sure there are some exceptions, but if you were to scale a flea up to the size it would need to be to hit that 4 mile (or whatever it is) jump height, it would likely blow itself apart with the force needed to propel its weight that high, nevermind the landing would crack it open like an egg. Sure they're fast and powerful, but that's not hard when you weigh less than a hair.

Its maneuverability at high speed probably has to do with the aerodynamic forces increasing relative to the square of the velocity. Say for example, if it's travelling at 50kph and sticks out a wing, the drag on that wing is (arbitrary number for the sake of the example) 10N, the drag creating a torque that will make the bird turn. At 100kph, the drag won't stay the same, neither will it double with the velocity, but rather quadruple to 40N. At 200kph it will be 160N, and so on. A similar effect can be seen in high downforce race cars, which are also more maneuverable at higher speeds, obviously up to the point where the tyres start losing grip.

TIL I can whistle and hum at the same time and our 2 yr old thinks it’s the most hilarious thing ever. I’ve been forced to make this sound the entire duration of the video. 🥲 Thanks, Karl…

Suzuki named the Hayabusa after the falcon both because of it's insane speed and the fact that Peregrine falcons will hunt Blackbirds (Honda's fastest bike at the time was the Blackbird)

If I had to be a bird for a day it would probably be a Peregrin Falcon.

I had a falcon fly into a window christmas morning and snapped its neck , i had no idea what had happend cause the sound was so loud it woke me up , i opend the front door to see and i turned the corner and all i saw was a pair of claws sticking up at me , scared the sht outta me . Once i calmed down i looked again and saw what happend , we had a windchime with a ceramic bird on top that was on the ground then. It dove to catch that bird but went into the window after , window didnt break thankfully tho
